System Requirements

Hi, I really want to support you guys and preorder the game but I have a ThinkPad x61s. So posting system requirements would be a good thing! Will you have a "I play because it's fun, not because it looks pretty" option for us "travellers" in the graphics configuration?

It looks awesome though, just a bit too awesome for my setup! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

There was a system requirement posted on the preorder page.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->System Requirements:

1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, a DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows Vista/2000/XP, mouse, keyboard and an internet connection.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

How well it works however depends on exactly what your x61 has in it.

I know i can run quite a few games on my T60, and I do plan on seeing exactly how NS2 works on it when we get to alpha, but until then you are likely going to have to wait for any more hard figures ( this system should give you x fps at y settings )

Keep in mind that these are the minimum system requirements (and probably subject to change). That means that it will run, but it won't look nearly as pretty as it can.

10 peraflop processor, 100 jiggawatt powersupply and a voodoo 2 card

(in other words, its TBA for final specs)

Can you even run source games on modern integrated graphics? If not, then I really doubt you will be able to run NS2. You should get a laptop with a discrete graphics card if you want to play intense 3D games like NS2.

My laptop runs tf2 and l4d just good enough to play them, not nicely and not as smooth as a I like, but it is playable. I agree that it has nothing on my desktop, ( laptop is only an Ati x1400, my desktop I use mainly for gaming got an 8800 GTS )

Seeing how I have an T60, and from what I recall the T61 is the next model, and the x61 is based on that, I thought my reply was meaningful.

Personally I don't know how good the "modern integrated graphics" are, but you have to realize that most people with that get that type of card got the computer to do more work, or maybe play something nice like The Sims. Not some FPS @ 1200P @ 120Hz. So that is why most integrated graphic cards, are not gaming cards. There no reason to add cost or power demands on a machine that is already sitting there doing nothing harder then firefox , office, and minesweeper. however they are able to do quite a bit more then one might think, if one is willing to settle for low quality.

If I do have one more thing to add, those specs seem to be a missing a little bit of information. ( like PS type, minimum Vram, is it x64 as well? )

I'm going to have to squeeze all the juice out of my machine to run this puppy...

    -Quad-Core 3.2Ghz
    -4gb DDR2 1066mhz Ram
    -ATI HD 4870
    -30inch LCD 2560x1600 resolution

I can barely run a 2hr Supreme Commander game at over 50fps with max graphics at 8xAA with this setup.

I like how you add in the monitor which actually lowers your fps (at native res)

Also, mission accomplished, I envy you.

Considering your post <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=106613" target="_blank">here</a>, I really doubt you'll be able to run Ns2.

    Only one monitor? Lame.

Also, I hope you are running x64, or your 4gb of memory ends up being more like 3gb.

    Personally, I run 6gb of memory, a 260GTX, AMD X2 4600+, along with dual 19" LCD's

    Intel E8400 Dual-Core overclocked to 4GHz, ATi Radeon 4870, 8GB DDR2 RAM, and a 24" LCD.

Eddie, I hope you have the 1GB version of the 4870, else your really being held back running games at 2560x1600 with only 512MB VRAM.

Negative. Any 32bit OS can't use more then 4GB combined memory, even Vista. Vista will <b>display</b> you have over 4GB, but it still can't address it. This is the nature of a 32bit OS.

Lol, have fun with a big bezel in the middle of your screen. I'd take a single, giant screen, over two smaller ones any day.

I've got at 30" monitor too, which is great for photoshop and stuff but can be really punishing on my poor 8800GTX with modern games. Its hard to get a good framerate at native resolution even with games like team fortress 2. The great thing about HL is I can actually run it at 60FPS!

    Not exactly true.

    <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension</a>

In windows world it only applied to windows 2000 server advance and above, windows server 2003 Enterprise Storage, and above, and windows server 2008 Enterprise and above. But there is no real reason you can not run them as your desktop os, other then cost for a legal copy.

However in Mac OS X ( Intel macs and beyond ), freebsd, and linux kernel after 2.6, all support this mode, allowing a 32bit install to use up to 64GB of ram.

These system requirements are basically the same as Half-Life 2.

1.2 GHz processor, 256 MB RAM, DirectX 6 level graphics card

The only difference is that DirectX 9 is required for NS2, undoubtedly to reduce bloat and keep the engine streamlined.

They're ripped from the NS2 promo site which was released <2 weeks ago. So they are relevant. Yes things change, however that's the estimated minimum specs from the team as of late. You guys clearly aren't reading the FAQ's from old and even from the new. I wouldn't expect anything amazing to run on it but with your 256Bit+ Graphics cards, dual core processors and fair sized RAM, expect to be able to play the game decently and stop worrying.

Because thats what happens when someone posts system specs - any user with similar or better specs needs to post there own. It's like some kind of law or something <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Ok, but I mean the x61s runs CS:S perfectly, that is 30-40 FPS with candy turned on. Regarding my post about NS1, the only thing that slows things down are special effects that you totally don't need to be able to enjoy the game. I bough a small laptop because it weighs 1 kilo and I don't have to break a sweat when I travel or even ask the question: "Should I bring the computer?". It would be great if the devs could comment on if they have the time and resources to optimize the game enough.

Haha devicenull, I actually do have a 2nd monitor (22") just didn't mention it.
My vram is actually only 512mbs cause I bought it right when it came out, which is why it's lacking in fps in high resolution flying_moose, as WhiteZero said.
And yes I do run 64bit, XP that is... I just couldn't handle the crap Vista/7/Ubuntu/Fedora/OpenSuse/Debian/ even Damn Small Linux were giving me.
