<div class="IPBDescription">Killing Floors</div>Its not really a zombie survival, but similar! Killing Floor was a Unreal Tournament 2004 mod that was bought up by Tripwire, which was the same company that did Red Orchestra. Its 25% if you pre-order it and with a price of $15, how can I resist XD. Here are the facts from the steam store.

Looked too much like a ripoff of L4D to be worth my while. That and the models/animations looked spectacularly bad.

The mod came out 2005. Killing floor would be similar to the current L4D survival mode, but in Killing Floor you have more options in the setting to survive. They were probably the first people to introduce the idea of welding doors in survival horror. I know the trailer does not show it, but Killing Floor is focused on teamwork because of the different types of mobs and the limited amount of ammo until the wave is over. There is a interview, where the people Killing Floor discuss about L4D here <a href="http://news.filefront.com/gt-qa-tripwires-killing-floor/" target="_blank">http://news.filefront.com/gt-qa-tripwires-killing-floor/</a> . If anything when the game come out this thursday, I will tell you if its good or not.

Yeah those stupid time travelling mod developers ripping off L4D before it existed.

I'm waiting for the inevitable free weekend; Red Orchestra has had a few, I believe, so I'll just check out Killing Floor when it gets one. It seems pretty neat though, and Tripwire hasn't let me down so far. All one of their games have been awesome.

Seems to be a bit more atmospheric/scary than L4D.

Also seems to throw a lot more mooks at you, Serious Sam-style. I approve! L4D definitely had the console port in mind- I played the xbox360 version at my misses' yesterday and the walk-in-the-park bits are a lot more challenging using a controller.

Well, this game turned out to be pretty damn good.

    Pro:
    -The guns feels powerful

-The gridy look for the weapons and environment help built up awesome horror atmosphere

-Each map fits nicely in the horror survival scenario

-Its not easy, this is important for me because it helps support the strong teamwork and increase the replay value of the game

-Perks system- this just helps you adjust to what kind of player you want to be and its simple

-With the support of SDK, there will be more maps and mods

-No cross hair along with the options to hide your hud, this helps pull in the players to the game

-The iron sight is well done, probably because they did in RO XD

-Solo mode, to prepare for online play- you can work up your perks in solo also

    -Cheap price

    Con:
-Annoying voice overs- probably be changeable in the next patch

-Same thing with L4D, its more fun if you have people you know playing with you.

    Final Thoughts:
For the price of $20, I think it present itself nicely as a horror survival game. If you are still thinking about how it is similar to L4D, this game is very different from its pacing, freedom to explore the map, earning your weapons from kills and these specimens are not 1 shot kill zombies like in L4D. This game fits nicely in my heart for zombie-ish survival game. Also for a game based on a mod with the original mod team, I was more than happy enough to support them. If anything, they are planning a free weekend thingy, but I don't know when is it. Did I mention there is a welder? XD

So I've played a good couple hours of KF so far and theres some things I like, and some things that really really annoy me.

    Things I like:
    - Games scaling to player size. One thing I didn't like about L4D was the requirement of having 4 people to really get into the harder difficulties. I generally can only round up a single friend at a time for playing co-op stuff, so the fact that Killing floor works regardless of how many people you have is great.

    - The perks. They give me something to work towards while playing and give some fairly substantial bonuses.

    - Most of the weapons. A lot of the weapons are really solid. They look nice, their sounds have a good feel to them, the iron sights are pleasant to use, and generally they're just fun.

    - Welding. I like the mechanic. Its useful, if not a little overpowered. Unfortunately it only applies to doors (and all doors at that. Even wooden ones) but I'm sure it wouldn't take much to add other weldable objects.

    Things that bugged me.
    - The perks are essentially classes. Yeah you can work towards leveling up one while using a different perk, and yeah they don't restrict you from using any weapon. But still, they're classes. They function as classes. When I choose the sharpshooter perk I become "ANeM - Level 1 Sharpshooter" on the scoreboard. They're classes, why not just call them that?

    - Currently is theres no way to change the map, difficulty or game length. Your stuck with whatever the server admin set it to. I know a lot of people don't like L4Ds system due to the fact you can sometimes end up on suboptimal servers, however I'd rather play on a suboptimal server with the game setup exactly how my group wanted than play on a suboptimal server with settings that are kind of sort of what we wanted.

    - There is a 'boss' monster that comes up after all the waves are completed. His abilities are 1-3shot kill melee attacks after sprinting at a player, or a minigun burst that will kill in about 1.5 seconds, or a rocket that will kill in 1 hit. He can also go invisible at any time. Also after getting him down a certain percentage he can go invisible and run away while spawning a small wave of enemies. He can do that multiple times. He stupidly difficult on any setting above Beginner and hes just not fun to fight. Ever. He has an ugly model, a horrible voice and really cheap tactics. You can use mutators to disable him, but doing so means you can't level up your skills. Not that there is any actual bonus to killing him.

    - The flamethrower is broken. I like flamethrowers. Everyone likes flamethrowers, but this one just doesn't feel right and has some really bad mechanics. The fire doesn't look good, and it doesn't even look like its coming out of the weapon, the effect appearing a good 2 feet infront of it. The fire goes a little too far, with little to no spread to it, and extinguishes very quickly upon hitting the ground.
Moving while firing lights the player on fire. The burning effect causes your screen to become blurry as if you were being hit, making it difficult to aim and giving very little indication that you're actually on fire, often causing the user to spin around checking for enemies. The perk linked to the flamethrower allows you to mitigate the fire damage but will not actually make you immune to this so you'll run into this issue no matter what..
Furthermore the ammo is limited, the damage seems to scale oddly compared to other guns. Small enemies die in a single blast while larger ones take exponentially longer to kill. The only real application of the flamethrower is using the fire to track the aforementioned boss monster when he tries to invis and sneak off.
And as previously stated, there is a perk, (ie:class) dedicated to the flamethrower. It does nothing but improve the flamethrower.

I'd label it like a B movie, great guns and sounds and some effects (global slowmo is the best thing in the entire game). However, many models look uninspired (boss being a perfect example) and some have freakin annoying effects (the witch and her screaming, producing large spheres of red on your face). The melee weapons are seriously boring and clunky and the price of weapons are a bit random, as in not taking damage output into consideration. Most animations just look bad in the game. The flamethrower is put to shame by the TFC one made a decade ago.

Generally the best idea is just to sit somewhere with one or two doors and stack up enemies on the other side before letting em in and throwing a ######load of grenades at them.. The patriarch (boss creature) seem to have issues with most things, never really died to him except when trying to chop his head off with a fireaxe (normal difficulty).

    I keep clicking RMB when surrounded and unable to move <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Bottom line, if you got it for 13 dollars while it was cheap, it's just about worth it with a slap of mediocrity and unpolish-ity.
