In other news, here's an excerpt from the author's blog, where he is running a contest where people send in pictures (Photoshopped or not) of <i>The Name of the Wind</i> to win prizes:

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><img src="http://www.patrickrothfuss.com/blog/uploaded_images/Statue-of-liberty-720734.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I've had several photos where the book was shown with famous landmarks. This one brings back some memories. I haven't been out to the statue of liberty since I had to fetch that shipment of Ambrosia for UNATCO all those years ago....<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I thought it was cool. I mean, I first heard about the book by clicking on a link in the author's signature on the Penny Arcade forums and I decided to read it when I saw his profile picture included him wearing a "Joss Whedon is my master now" shirt.

From what I was reading, I got the impression it has already been written. (and so has the third)

It was originally one big book, but the publisher decided to split it into three.
It doesn't seem like it should take a year and a half for what should just be editing and revising.

I think the publisher is just delaying the next release to try to build more hype for it. :\

The editing and the rewriting is what takes a while. I don't think it's the publisher's fault. I think the author just underestimated how long it would take him or something.

The best book ever is still called "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Glory-Prelude-DragonCrown-Cycle/dp/0553578073" target="_blank">The Dark Glory War</a>" by Michael A. Stackpole.

The rest of the series... not so much. But this very first is so awesome.

<a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Malazan-Book-Fallen-Toll-Hounds/dp/0593046382" target="_blank">Toll the Hounds</a>, the 8th Steven Erikson (for the love of God, READ IT) novel is due out in a month. This is clearly still the best fantasy series in years, rivalled only by George R R Martin with A Song of Ice & Fire (and in my personal opinion, Erikson is <i>better</i>.) and is a nice 'modern' style, keeping well away from fantasy cliche, with believable characters (with motives! 'Evil' characters who actually are trying to <b><i>achieve</b></i> something aside from domination for the sake of domination!) and terrifying magic.

Go. Get the first book, Gardens of the Moon, be converted.

I like George R. R. Martin's, but not that much. I simply never felt motivated to reread his book. Never have this problem with Robin Hobb's or Robert Jordan's or Jim Butcher's. I have a feeling I'll be rereading Kingkiller Chronicle over and over too. I'll check out Steven Erikson's.

Bringing back this thread to mention that <a href="http://www.patrickrothfuss.com/blog/blog.html" target="_blank">the author</a> is signing books for charity and has some cool contests going on. Good Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hanukkah stuff for you or a fan of the book :-) .

You missed 2 big points on this
    its short and its free.
Theres really no reason not to read it. Worst case scenario is you'll get to the end and feel that the book wasn't quite the best book ever written and you've wasted 2 hours of your life. What were you going to do with those 2 hours anyways?
In my case it was sleeping, and in reflection I probably should have spent them sleeping and simply read the book at a later time, but.. I still would have read the book, its worth reading, its short, and its free.

    Thanks I forgot about those!
It's a very short but good read yes, the latter book is a tad longer.

Thinking back, I think I like this book mostly because it seems very much to appeal to my fantasy of being a powerful, skilled, yet modest magician and musician, and my desire to meet a mysterious beautiful intelligent elusive woman who is also very interested in me over all the other men she can be with despite my shortcomings.

In short, I think its literary pornography, without the stickiness.

It also appeals to people who don't want to be the main character, like me! So clearly we see the universal appeal.

If you ever want to see flagrant geek porn watch "The Librarian". I don't think there's any other reason for that movie's existence.

I would get this book, now, if it didn't turn out to be a trilogy. Because the trend of trilogies is that the first book is awesome, the second mediocre and the last crap. With a few exceptions. So I'll wait till the second book comes out before I decide. Hope it will be good though.

And if gets to be a quadrilogy, I'll wait for the third book. And if it becomes like harry potter, I'm dropping it.

It's just a trilogy. Incidentally I'm re-reading the first book right now. Just as good the second time, even without having taken large amounts of illegal chemicals in order to forget everything I read.

Just finished The Name of the Wind, and I'm sold. It's AWESOME!

Now I gotta track down the rest.

EDIT: just realized the others aren't.. um... readily available.

They're just not written yet, is all. Well, they're partially written, and the second one is being edited or whatever, but yeah. No books yet. There are other good books though.

Currently reading 'The Lies of Locke Lamora' on reccomendation from my raid leader.

First fantasy novel I've read that I didn't want to spit in the author's eye over. Well, maybe not the first of that, but its at least the best I've read yet(not a wide breadth of fantasy here).

It's.... 'decent'. It didn't blow me away at all, but as you note, it's a sight better than the majority of fantasy. The problem being, when judging against such a mediocre bunch of options, that's not really surprising. The plot is pretty flaky in places, and I tend to get annoyed at main characters who are so much clearly brighter than anyone else in the book (because you ask the obvious question: Why are they doing this at all?). That said, it was enjoyable at least.

OMG! I just finished reading it! The Name of the Wind to be clear. Can't really put my awe into words, so I'll just say it's AWESOME. Now I'm eagerly waiting for the next part.

I read the whole thing in about five days, which says a lot, since I pick up books only occasionally and I've read only three novels in English before this one.

Anyways, if you're reading this thread because of this bump and haven't read that book yet... DO IT NOW!
