My first impressions:

The lobby system might seem jarring at first, since we're accustomed to a proper server browser, but when you think about it a little bit more you realise that a server browser full of four man servers wouldn't really be any better. You'd spend your time hunting for non-full servers. The games are a bit more intimate so picking a server for it's good usual crowd is largely irrelevant.

Expert is definitely the difficulty for someone that's played FPS games before. It is PUNISHINGLY difficult. I haven't managed to finish a game on expert yet. Running out of ammo is a serious concern, and tanks are pretty much GG if you don't handle them perfectly.

So far, daddy like.

I have run into one tank on expert so far.

It wasn't that bad tbh.

I mean, it nearly killed me, but only me, and I was the only one fighting it..... (it ended with me knocked down and the other 3 finally turning around)

So far, I like.

It's the only way I pick servers because I enjoy getting a good ping; which hardly happens with the Matchmaking as it tends to connect you to servers on the other side of the globe. It also sucks that the game only gives you the option to make a listen server after you fail to find a dedicated server.

Other than the terrible matchmaking the game is amazing, but going into another map with terrible health on Expert pretty much seals the deal which then leads to frustration but that's what I demand from a zombie apocalypse. Too bad Advanced is way too easy.

DON'T SHOOT THE RED CAR.

What I don't get is the sudden leap of difficulty between a level 3 (advanced) and level 4 (expert) difficulty rating...

Easy, hmm dunno haven't tried it... Another thing is I'm not a fan of is the sudden spawning of zombie hordes that automaticly know where your team is. Even when you're just hiding in a corner or behind stuff, not making any sound. Whats this: "radar guided zombie drones"?

With you on a more fluid DC slope.

However, the horde knowing where you are is generally triggered by something like:
1) The idiots that always have to shoot/jump on the car
2) getting puked on by a boomer
3) a key point where the director thinks a zombie horde is a good idea (seems to often be linked to finding gun upgrades)

I can understand when were shooting zombies out in the open, the horde somehow gets wind of this "ratatata" sound, boomer puking all over your team or people with a fasination for shiny cars with alarms. They I expect them to start steamroling into our general direction, but I want hiding/sneaking to mean something!

Just imaging! A horde of zombies running down the street with you hiding behind a box or car, hoping not to get spotted...

Also I've yet to get a scare out of this game it's edgy, but nothing like the first parts of doom3. Are you sure it was expert Shock I thought it was advanced?

I mean, John "frG" Rambo ran up to a witch and solo'd her with 3 shotgun shells.

My feelings are the game is a 7/10 if you play with randoms, 9/10 if you play with friends. I tend to find if a random pubber goes down I'll take care of number 1 before picking him up but if it's a friend I'll zerg rush a group of zombies- pistol-whipping if I have to- to bring him up.

I don't mean that they arent powerful, but they're not particularly unique. Just shoot them a lot until they die, The gameplay seems pretty much exactly the same boss or normal zombies. I prefer "boss" fights to exhibit some sort of adjustment in strategy, not just "use more bullets."

thats true to an extent, but ive noticed slight differences in how i handle different bosses. with boomers the strategy is to knock them away with melee, with hunters its to stay behind things and dodge a lot, with tanks its to run and put as much walls, corners, cars, anything between you and them as possible, and with smokers its basically see them before youve got a tongue around your neck

apologies for the dbl post, but tis warranted:

PLAY AS THE INFECTED!
"sv_cheats 1" in console
to change team to infected
"ent_fire !self setteam 3" in console

to get the game to start once on that team type
"director_force_versus_start 1" in console

to spawn type
"z_spawn tank" in console
"z_spawn hunter" in console
"z_spawn smoker" in console
"z_spawn boomer" in console

i had a crash once or twice, and also i noticed that the breakable walls and climbable spots are not visible like they showed the previews, so you'll just have to guess as to how to do that.

with hunters you can actually wall jump from one wall to another. as long as youre in the air and touching a wall you can make another lunge, so its possible to zigzag up an alley to the top of the buildings

You can start friend-only games. You can also invite friends to your game, and kick people from the lobby. It's really not difficult.

4 hours later, still same.

Restarted steam, verified files, defragged files, restarted PC, same same same.

I love steam, it DLed the game in almost 800kb/s and buying was over in minutes but when ###### like this happens I wonder if it's worth it. No game I bought retail have ever done something like this. Everything is fine and installed and loaded but some general error is just keeping me from playing.

Man, Advanced was still easy, and I had the stupid AI bots for a team. AND I picked up the auto shotgun just for kicks.

Still gotta try Expert.

I've enjoyed it so far, but I totally understand the why doesn't sneaking work problem. I mean, seriously, if I'm pistol sniping them down the hall, that's one thing, but I'm crouch walking in the street I already cleared and suddenly the "a hoarde is coming" music starts for no reason. =[

But yeah, I've played with just dual pistols to make it harder. And you can totally just have one person on melee duty while the rest shoot them up.

So, I will finally weigh in: fun!

Yes, go play on the highest difficulty and it's worth it totally. 2 of my teammates were dead and me and the other person left were down to 1 health each. A witch and room of guys stood between us and saving out teammates. The witch sadly got activated, and I went down, but between me pistolling and her shotgunning, she lived and got our teammates out, was amazing.

Fast forward to the end, all low on health again but heading to the exit and same lady molotov's us so we all fall as she heads to win by herself. I shoot her in the head just before she turns the corner in the safe house. We all lose! Yet still fun.

Expert is supposedly when the game really gets hard and you have to coordinate with good team mates in order to succeed.

The game is a lot of fun so far. Can't wait for the full version.

The demo:

Expert is really the only difficulty worth playing, cause you have a good chance of losing. The primary game mechanic is crouching and positioning so everyone has a clear shot at zombies. Also, balancing melee with firing, timed reloading, and not wasting health packs, but those are a given. I was actually hoping there would be more emphasis on resource management, like in zombie panic. But that can get confusing. Oh, and don't wake the witch. I'm surprised at how simplistic the game is without player controlled zombies...

Yep, I guess you're right. That about sums it up. So, what makes or breaks this game is how player zombs are implemented.

Comprox story brings me to something I had forgotten I wanted to ask about: What keeps total, utter ######tards like that from ruining your game with rampant teamkilling? I understand there's not even going to be an OPTION to turn friendly fire off, which sounds appalling.

in the full game all stats are going to be tracked. ALL stats. friendly fire, zombies killed, zombies headshotted, boss zombies killed, players defended by killing a zombie thats about to attack them, and other stuff like that, so in the lobby you can see what kind of player they are and kick them if need be.

also theres a call vote option in game, with options like restart campaign, change difficulty, and i think theres a kick player.
• lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
I wonder if people won't be able to game that system, such as never shooting your teammates but molotoving them right at the end so they all fall as you head to win by yourself. Surgical application of ######tardery rather indiscriminate spraying of bullets at all your teammates won't show up as significantly elevated friendly fire in the stats.

Most systems are abuseable, and I'd rather have permanent friendly fire rather than the option to turn it off. No friendly fire just doesn't fit the game. There could also simply be a stat for number of times kicked.
