Disclaimer, this info is from Mythic, and thus not necessarily 100% true for EU:

If you are in the head start don't worry about when you will be getting your codes as they plan on giving us enough extra time to enter them to allow for retailers to ship out boxes.

    PS:
Playing on a server that us full sucks. The amount of latency that creeps into every aspect is really annoying. I contrasted it by rolling up a character on a low/low server and the difference was amazing.

    PPS:
So, are people stupid on all servers or is it just mine?

    Rolling need on pots.
Never even THINKING of attacking the healers.
Attempting to capture the bridge Nordenwatch.
    etc etc.

After a couple of hiccups thanks to the patcher and using a retail CD install, I'm pretty disgusted to see that, already, there's a <b>822Mb</b> patch to bring the game up-to-date.

    [EDIT]

TOTALLY CONFUSED- the WAR website says the patch won't be up until 7am Thursday morning.

    WHAT IS GOING ON?

Here's an interesting little tidbit: You know those detaunts that also lower the damage the target does against you as long as you don't attack it? Turns out that a ticking dot doesn't count. As long as you apply all your dots BEFORE captain "I-have-witch-in-my-name-and-am-going-to-stick-pointy-bits-in-your-organs" closes to melee, you can then slap a detaunt on 'em and it'll stay there, essentially doubling your projected lifespan.
So you get to witness your allies ignoring that you're getting torn to shreds for six seconds rather than three.

Really, what is it about witch hunters/elves that screams "don't attack me, I just want to gank your clothies?" How does a class with no armour manage to never get any attention in PvP? What, besides healing, do I have to do to get my "allies" to watch my squishy back? You'd think they'd MISS having a healer around after I get raped with knives. Apparently people don't want to be healed.

Please, tell me these are growing pains. Tell me it's because people are still trying to figure out wtf to do. PLEASE. -_-

it is no better on the Order side. People focus on the big meaty targets (Orcs/Chosen) and ignore the WE/shamans/etc

However yah, that detaunts are great.

My normal way of dealing with melee characters (playing a BW) is to dot them up, hit em up with any long casts I can then detaunt/shield (stops skill knockback) and then start casting my long/heavy hitting spell.

yous guys have good advice for clothies, but I still swear that they're hard mode. If a melee class can pretty much kill a clothie from full health in less than 5 seconds, I should be able to kill them almost as fast if I catch them unawares, but my spells feel like they tickle at best. Stack all my DoTs and start nuking for 10 seconds and my target is still at 50% health or more... really makes me wonder what the actual advantage is of playing a clothie - but I guess I don't have my AoE's yet.

this is at least somewhat educated QQing, coming from a WoW affliction warlock who used to top the kill and damage charts in almost every battleground =p there is no 'stack 4 dots, run away, and watch them die' here <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

If you're playing archmage and have the space to use it, searing touch is easily one of your most damaging spells. Combine that with DoTs and you can put out some serious pain but still... archmages aren't really a pure damage class so you won't kill people as quick as the likes of a witch hunter or a white lion =3

I've built up some impressions of the classes from what I've dabbled in so far...

White Lion continues to be awesome. Sometimes the Pet AI glitches which is a royal pain, but when it behaves I can usually kill someone unless they've got two healers on them (and maybe a tank too). The highlight for me so far was when a group of two shaman, a squig herder and a sorceress were capturing our flags and I went out to meet them single-handedly. In one massive melee of madness I killed the squig herder, the sorceress and one of the shaman, leaving the final shaman on death's door when I finally keeled over from all the damage. Needless to say that was a total rout for them as my spawn was pretty much next to the cap point and the shaman didn't fancy his chances alone against someone who'd just taken out his entire team :3

My Archmage is awesomesauce. With her I successfully defended a cap point by myself from three sorceresses. I suspect it won't be so silly powerful when the melee classes start getting their anti-heal abilities but it's good fun having 100ft range so you can reach out and touch people with your DoT collections. That's the downside though... the archmage is a giant bag of 'over time'. If you cut her she bleeds HoTs and DoTs. I swear I've got like 1 ability that isn't one of those and I don't even use it because it's not worth it :p

Shadow Warrior is dissapointing. When I first started playing her I stacked ballistics through the roof and yet I was still strugging to really do anything in RvR or Scenarios. I could aid well in taking down a target but on my own I was a mere nuisance at best. When melee got into range I would just die, plain and simple. No escape from their roots and my root at level 9 was still a minimum 5ft range (though at 10 I'll get whirling pin thank heck) so I was fodder. I then looked at the assault stance and thought "hmmm...". Turns out SW have the same strength stats as a freaking witch hunter! Amazed by this I stacked a little strength and started using assault stance a lot: I'd run in peppering my chosen target with my DoT arrow, my snaring arrow and a spiral arrow (straight Direct Damage) and once I'd closed I'd whap them repeatedly with the starter melee attack (grim edge or something?) using the backstab whenever I could get behind them. Suddenly I was killing people.
Problem is, it's a lot easier to do the same on my white lion but I guess the Shadow Warrior can still peg people at range should it come down to it.... you can't really run away from one :o
I may give it some more time with these new tactics to see what happens. It doesn't help that I was trying this in the dwarf scenarios where we were getting steamrolled by level 11s.
Some people think this class needs fixed, I'm not sure. If you play it as an MDPS/RDPS hybrid it strangely seems to work, at least at the low levels but it's weak as a pure RDPS and you'll get maimed if you try to play pure MDPS with it as well... it's vital to start blasting heck out of the target as you close the distance before you melee to really make it click together and this is only at the low levels... perhaps higher up this trick might not work so well and for the love of god, avoid tanks: they will eat you alive!!! XD

Warrior Priest is insanely fun. I played it a bit in open beta and currently my lil rank 5 WP can solo the level 10 champions that guard the tier 1 capture points in RvR XD
She can handle people 1 on 1 no problem as long as they don't wizen up and run for it. Being focussed is a problem though but it's easy to avoid that situation by sticking with my order friends :3
While it takes longer to kill stuff with this class I can heal others and keep myself alive pretty darn well so it's worth the trade.

Magus dissapointed me most of all. I had hoped the demon would be as an essential part of the class as the lion is for the White lion but the demons are pretty mediocre at best. The magus has a lot of attacks that seem pointless as you have ones that already do the same job with no cooldown. Has a surprising amount of close range attacks too for something with paper for armour which doesn't really appeal to me as I'd been hoping for a more ranged class that relied on it's pet and area denial abilities for close up protection. As such it seems more like the magus is area denial itself but that' kinda meh due to it's low survivability. It's ranged attacks are quite slow for an RDPS which leads to most targets just running out of range or closing to melee before you can do much... it's comparable to my initial problems with the shadow warrior, except the SW has a stance that buffs armour and doesn't have a weak, fragile pet that's barely worth summoning even as a distraction :/
Some people like it but most complain that the class needs fixed, I'm inclined to agree.

I've not played the other classes really (I did touch on the sword master, but not enough to have a real opinion yet) but in the case of the mirror classes (e.g. Disciple of Khaine = Warrior Priest, Magus = Engineer) I find the results are slightly different but overall similar :3

I enjoyed my witch hunter until I discovered his stealth-equivalent skill (gained at level 10) doesn't really hide you, doesn't work in PvE and turns off as soon as you get hit, so a good mage will DoT me and I completely lose the incognito-related abilities.

If I can get in range of a mage class I can usually put them down, but you need a good 4 or 5 whacks on someone before your finishing moves do a decent amount of damage, and it takes around 10 whacks before I have enough morale to use my hugely damaging attack; the problem is that a good opponent won't let a squishy DPS melee player get that amount of hits in. As a result you've got one play-style: flit around the outskirts of the battlefield and dive in when you see an enemy in trouble, then rush out and wait to recharge. Effective but gets old quick. The one saving grace is that your combo points aren't limited to the guy you whacked on so you can charge them on a tank and then unleash a finisher on a caster.

Contemplating rolling a tank as from my experience other people don't know how to play a tank properly. Problem is I favour Order and I'm racist against dwarves and the Sword Master has a silly costume.

Played a Disciple of Khaine for a bit and was disappointed. The problem with hybird classes is they pale in comparison to the equivalent class, so a DoK's healing is ok but nothing compared to a healer, and their damage output is ok but nothing compared to a DPS'er. In scenarios they tend to be a bit naff.

    GREAT post, Gem!

I spent the past four days playing WAR - each day was another 16+ hour gaming session with a class. Among some others, I manged to level a Dwarf Engineer to 9, and an Empire Witch Hunter to 8.

I haven't tried the Destruction classes - but from what I have seen on the Order side, everything is pretty balanced. I was playing alright with my Dwarf Engineer - but I was always losing Public Quess... I think it's a lot of managment, switching where your turrets are and whatnot; and taking care of them.

Then when I started playing the Witch Hunter (no movement penalty for using his pistol) - I started playing better... which is strange for me. (Lawl). So it leads me to believe the Witch Hunter is a tad overpowered - suddenly I was winning EVERY Public Quest I took part it, and leveling super-fast and soloing high end bosses with my Melee DPS / Ranged DPS hybrid. The only downside to the Witch Hunter is how squishy you are.

Warhammer is super-fun. What I find odd and interesting is how full the servers are, but how QUIET everyone is! I must have heard only a handful of conversations while I played. The players are really quiet.

The graphics are nice - they remind me of an "adult" WoW - less exaggerated features, but with the same underlying style.

    Thanks for your time,
    Sid <3

one of the issues with peopel talking is that the default chat set up blows dead bears.

You ONLY can chat to people in your immediate area. This can be solved with:
    /channel Order/Destruction

You get a new chat channel that is zone wide. Use it and inform every one you play with to use it.

I'm glad most people are enjoying it... gives me more friends to fight alongside / opponents to kill ;D

I've been fussing about with the sword master and it's quite fun. You just have to remember that you're a tank so you counter melee quite nicely, but ranged chars can really lay the hurt on you.

I had a very quick run with my warrior priest again and as long as you can keep up with the insane amounts of management they're very powerful. I got 10k healing and 5k damage in a scenario (I was rank 6). That put me 2nd highest healing (by quite a large gap from those below me) but miles more damage than the guy who got first :3
Sometimes the tanks wisened up and all beat on me but in such a frantic melee they had trouble keeping track of me so I gave them the slip a few times and even got one or two on their own and beat them down with some help :D

This is the first MMO I've actually really enjoyed several classes with no complaints. I'm usually struggling to pick one because there's something I don't like about them all but this is the reverse: I can't pick one because they're all rather fun XD

Major downside to my altaholism is that most players on Karak Hirn have moved onto tier 2 so the queues for tier 1 scenarios are getting rather slow.

My Disciple of Khaine is so very OP compared to the Archmage and Magus I've leveled so far. I regularly come out of scenarios topping damage *and* healing. If that doesn't scream 'nerf' I don't know what does <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> toss around tons of heals, make mince meat of all the squishies - such a joy. I can keep myself alive with like 3 people beating on me. And at level 10 I finally got a snare, so they can't escape my wrath anymore!

Honestly, I have trouble seeing the point of playing a non-healing class so far. Most of the healers are capable of doing like 90% of the damage a non-healer can, but they can heal too =p As gem said, my magus feels pretty gimpy in particular. He just doesn't have enough going for him to compensate for the squishiness. The AoE is short-range and the single-target long-range nukes are lackluster. I think you do get some better 'survival' abilities later, though - I saw a level 14ish magus with a buff that provided more armor than my Disciple of Khaine has total at level 10. Of course, the magus still can't heal...

I don't mind too much that the pets are rooted in place though, even though I thought I would hate it and was more expecting WoW-style demon pets. These are pretty quick to cast, they have sort of a lot of hp, and they do pretty good damage for a fire-and-forget ability. Drop a pinky a good distance from a skirmish and he'll pelt the enemy mercilessly. Drop one at a flag you're leaving and it will slow any attacker down for a few seconds, and give you an alarm system for when that flag is being attacked. The blue demon with his AoE is very nice to put around a corner or at a choke point, like right by the bridge to the middle cap point in the first Chaos/Empire scenario. They all tend to charge over that bridge at once and get a nice face full of AoE while you can hide out of harm's way.
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
Healers and tanks are the only classes that are really needed in any situation. MDPS and RDPS just make things easier.

That being said, there is NOTHING like a sorc or BW for topping the damage charts. PQs I almost always come out on top, and scenarios I tend to be near the top, but that depends on other players (If I am getting bumrushed every time I pop my head up, I am going to be worthless).

I like the Rune priest/Zel mechanic more then the DoK/PoS

huh, just loged back in and the inevitable city just jumped to rank 5, guess that was what the update was about....

Seriously, Open RvR == dumb. Enjoy your stay.

Or come join us on a core server where:
RvR is awesome! (because you can't get level ganked)
And so are PQs! (because you can't get level ganked)
And so is soloing! (because you can't get level ganked)

    Quick note:

    Serious bug when crafting:
You might end up seeing what looks like a glitched icon (like you are trying to use a robe as a stabilizer), in fact you actually ARE trying to use your armour as a stabilizer, and you will probably succeed, leaving you buck nekkid.

    Only advantage of this was:
"Did a nekkid Bright Wizard just do a flag run?" being asked during STC (T2 EvC scenario, that sucks), and being able to say yes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

so, you guys still like the game? Honestly, I'm getting kind of tired of it already <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I like so many of the classes on the surface, but the game just isn't sucking me in enough to want to max any of them out... I have about 6 characters ranging from level 6 to level 15, and I don't love any of them enough to designate it my 'main' - and yet leveling several is also too tedious to keep up with... also, there's a bit of a catch-22 when it comes to server populations. the game is very people-dependent, so if you're on a low-pop server, you'll never be able to finish a public quest and you'll have unbearable queue times for scenarios - but if you're on a high-pop server, you'll have unbearable lag...
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
My only real frustration with it is that like disco, I'm struggling to pick a 'main' <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I want to love my shadow warrior but while she looks awesome, she's a chore to play.

I like my white lion. It's fun getting in the back and eviscerating the enemy ranged and healers. only irk is that you really need a tank to take out those silly champion things that guard keeps and I find myself often being the only player on my team who realises how important standing on a point to prevent it being captured is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I like my sword master, she kicks heck out of other melee chars and I can stand on a point and just soak up the damage, especially if people heal me. In one particularly amazing match I pretty much held the entire chaos team at bay in the guns of nordwatch with lots of healers behind me keeping me standing, ranged firing over me and witch hunters harrassing their back row. Amazing what a single tank can do with their team sometimes... we took all 3 points :3
If I'm on my own and I see a ranged class I just get the heck out of there. Their roots and whatnot prevent me really killing them unless it's a magus... then it's going dooooown <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I like my archmage, I can command from the back. MDPS that slip behind the lines are a pain though and it's hard to just stand on a point with her as she can't take focus fire as well as tank girl (which is fine really). My only genuine discontent is how I have to keep refreshing about 30 odd DoTs and Hots all the time. A lot of annoying management when I'd be much happier just using the HAND BEAM OF DOOOOOOM (aka searing touch).

I like my warrior priest. She can almost stand point as well as my tank (almost) and I can heal and rez. Not quite as damaging as my tank though and while I can semi-tank, our team needs to take down the champions or whatever faster than they would for my sword master.

I tried my magus again and liked her even less the second time around than I did the first time. Oh well :/
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
it's funny - meanwhile, I'm really starting to love my magus <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> it's not a WoW warlock, but it's the closest thing there is in this game. One plus is that a lot of my DoTs are AoE. I find myself topping the damage meters often just by stacking dots on pretty much their whole team at the same time. I came in 1st on damage at level 12 on my first time in a tier 2 scenario... of course damage doesn't always mean everything, but I'm a sucker for big numbers. =p next level, I get a tactic that makes my demons instant summon! /drool. but the class definitely does suffer from being largely point-blank AoE without the mitigation to make that too viable. Some of our best spells are point-blank, and that's obviously asking for a lot of trouble as a cloth wearer. Honestly, I think that if the class was given medium armor, it would finally be fully balanced... but I still hold my own just fine. I do have an AoE root with just like a 10 second cooldown after all. witch hunters are my greatest weakness, since they don't really care if I root them and they melt right through my cloth armor from long range. also that ranged snare is soo annoying...

as far as PvE goes - it's frustrating not to be able to solo a champion mob, let alone a hero (like my Disciple can), but on the other hand, my magus can AoE down 5 same-level regular mobs in the same time it would take my disciple to kill one... really, the magus has very lackluster single-target deeps... definitely shines in the AoE department though.
