NS Rocks

And you don't deserve it!
I played NS a long time ago on dialup, and I was always sad that I could never experience it right.... I really couldn't play it. For the last year, I've had satellite internet which we upgraded from dialup. Same situation, I couldn't play it. There was like a 6 second delay or I couldn't move at all. Well now we signed up for Verizon DSL yesterday because that FINALLY came to our area. I am super excited to play NS, but these threads about nobody playing it? These scare me. How could anyone stop playing NS? I mean, I played a little on Dialup and it looked so much funner than CS. The graphics and all were awesome, you controlled aliens, and ran around real fast, and worked with machines to set waypoints and all kinds of incredible things.

Don't whine about people not playing it. Get on there and play! I am hoping to get on there within a couple of weeks, hopefully on fast DSL, and I'd love to have some cool people to help me around starting out. My name is Brandon Strader (no relation to Cory I don't think) and my Steam profile is http://steamcommunity.com/id/oinkness. I am a musician, and a musical journalist. I have also been going to college for a couple years on an Interactive Digital Media major. Working with Photoshop and Illustrator, a lot of fun. My main joy is music though.

So really.... I am super excited to get on there, and also to try out some other mods. Though honestly, I don't know of any except some kind of Dragonball Z one, but it probably sucks. If anyone wants to help out a fast internet virgin with this stuff, please, talk with me! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I can tell you why ppl stop playing it. I have not played it for a good long time before I recently came back again:

    * MINUS the rushes, exploits and bugs 1.04 was brilliant. Better atmosphere and matches.
    * 2.x ruined the 1.04 atmosphere
    * combat put NS in the intensive care due to the infusion of news who were 'great' in combat but could live 10 seconds in NS or build.
    * the forums (these forums) going down for a long long time was kinda the death blow.

NS never recovered. Most (I said most, not all ok) oldbies like me liked 1.04 above the 2x+ version. Although I agree NS has many great good things now (SC not being utter trash, but smaller trash, a realistic map) it has lost far more.

on any given pub server the player knowledge and playstyle is far below any level most of us oldbies like to play at. Given that this version does not allow mistakes since its a rush from the start unlike in 1.04 + the insane newbies who just refuse to learn makes most matches a pain, not a joy.

Ha ha, oh 1.04... how I remember it (even though I don't so much).

One thing I do remember in 1.04 was everyone complaining non-stop about it not being balanced and awaiting so impatiently the release of the next patch. Since then, so many have called 1.04 the best time of NS. The insane irony.

baloney. if i were commander and i could chose from a random set of active ns players from an random set of active combat players, i'd take the combat players.

You're in the definite minority. 90% of combat players don't even know how to play NS so I'm not sure why you think you'd win.

I just started playing again recently, and although there aren't many non-bot ns_classic servers out there they still exist and are usually full around the peak times. I was able to play non-modded servers all this past weekend(until Sunday evening). It is way down from what the averages used to be, but that's to be expected since the last release was a while ago.

As for 1.04, those are some mighty rose colored glasses.

I would take a group of active NS players over combat anyday, beacuase atleast they would play as a team even if we lose. Combat not so much.

I've personally played NS probably in the area of 3000-4000 hours. I'm sorry if I'm not around to play with you, but the reality is you can only play a game so long before it gets boring.

NS isn't competing with CS the way it was 7 years ago, it's competing with CS:S, DoD:S, TF2, COD4, UT3, and the assortment of console mutliplayer titles that people wouldn't have dreamed about back in the heyday of CS. You just can't expect a game this old to attract new users the way it used to be able to. So with the old population slowly getting board, and the new population being drawn away to newer shiner games, ya, the comunity has shrunk.

Get over it though, it's not because we've all moved on to CS, not by a long shot, most of us moved from CS to here and many have never touched CS again (I went back for kz jumpmaps for a while personally, but I haven't played the shooter aspect of CS in a good 5 years)
