And if there is a reduction for just jumping how do they measure that? Whether someone else gets hit or whether you're in the air?

    Just a quick general question...

Am I the only one who never lets go for +forward when playing the pyro, I'm 100% of the time on the move.

I heard somebody say: "Burn baby burn... Disco Inferno!"

Probably the same way they detect the rocketjump, your rocketblast + you jumping + damage reduction, I guess

I hope they still take more damage, else a good soldier will simply jump when spamming the floor with rockets.

Got OMGWTFBBQ on my first concentrated attempt- just camped a spawn door and nailed a spy on his way out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" />

I intend to save that achievement for a time when I can completely embarrass someone.

Well I am what I am, got all the new toys for pyro. All needed was some privacy and 3 people. Now I can relax and not play for a week or 2 until this all settles down.

Tried one server before I quit, a heavy+medic was dominating everyone, even getting big pharma because of the pyro spam. Soldiers are now RARE and demomen are up 50% with heavies.

Backburner works as it should, you just have to sacrifice soldier battling air-gust ability.
Flame-crit axe works nicely, but only really gets useful if you have pyro friends who hotshot enemies at a distance so you can get in directly with the axe and crit. As predicted, flaming and then axing doesn't work unless it's a sniper, spy, engineer or unaware medics, scouts and sometimes heavy. Other classes will just turn around and blast you before you can get a hit in.

I'm really looking forward to that backburner. I've got the first milestone and the next one is only four achievements away, so I can't make myself go to an achievement server, but I still wish I didn't have to jump through hoops to get it. The achievements should be a novelty, not essential. Ah well.

Got OMGWTFBBQ twice - didn't register properly the first time. That's probably because I did it AFTER my team lost - I ran up and killed one of the winners from behind as he was typing. Yes, you can now kill the winners even after you lose (with lots of luck). It's great.
Now that they've upped the damage on the hadouken to fatal, it's nowhere near as impossible to get as I predicted. Spot an enemy coming your way, retreat around a corner, fire up your taunt, and with a little luck he'll run right into it. It'll probably take some tries, but it'll work sooner or later. Otherwise, an unaware sniper or an afk player will also serve quite well.

All in all, I'm enjoying this one a lot more than the medic update mayhem the first time around. All the flaming and mumbling is hilarious.

Should be easier to get the OMGWTF acheivement- crappy snipers with no awareness beware!

Also, as if my fave class didn't get beefed up enough:
Means no more ambushing a soldier but dying as he can just aim at the floor and shoot- maybe the Pyro is genuinely the best short range class now? Barring skilled demomen?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->This is half-nerf and half-buff.

It means Soldiers can build up a Medic's uber much faster and not have to look for ammo on the way to the front line.

As sherpa says, there will probably be some way of avoiding the damage nerf. If it only does 100% self-harm when hitting an enemy, most Soldiers will just juggle enemies like they always did. If it does 100% unless you're in the air and shooting at the floor, you'll just jump while firing at the floor (which most good soldiers should be doing anyway at point-blank range to reduce the effect of splash damage whether it's 40% or 100%).

I'm not too worried about the Soldier's nerf. It needed it really, and it makes the Medic+Soldier combination slightly more efficient.

In 2Fort me and a soldier were making our way up to the enemy's base through the sewer when all of a sudden a pyro ambushes us. I hit him with the shotgun a bit as the soldier makes him swallow a rocket. I'm up the top of the stairs and I can see the pyro is about to retreat into his base, so I stand next to the doorway and start the taunt. The taunt's timing was perfect, and just as he crossed the doorway he fell in a heap on the floor.

I did it in a much less epic way... I just ran out behind the entire red team, waited for the sniper to spawn, followed him to his campspot, and then stood next to him and doublepalmed him <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

So I'm happy with the achievements this time. I got the Flaregun mostly without trying. Most of these happen during normal play which I think is very cool.

I don't like the get x number of melee kills in one life achievements though, I feel like they encourage very counter-productive teamplay.

What does the pyro say when he does it? Does he actually say Haduken?

He uses two sound files, the first being one of his death sounds. I don't know if he says anything in particular. At any rate, it's a tribute to the hadouken (although it more closely resembles a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Hibiki#Techniques" target="_blank">gadouken</a>).

Actually you can understand a good deal of what he says if you pay attention to what voice command triggers it. Stuff like "That scout is a spy!" is pretty easy to recognize if you're listening for it.

I got that achievement without the cheaty maps or the hack unlocks, it was mid fight against another pyro. I love the blowback too, load of guys crowding round a point or the cart on goldrush and *phwoom* they're flying in all directions.

Some of the translated titles of the achievements are a bit disturbing.
One of them translates (from danish to eng) to
    Fire in the Ass.

    Can't remember more...

Sadly he has fewest voice sounds then any other class, he only has 1 cheer, 2 jeers, one "that's a spy", one "help", one "put/need x here" and two "battlecry", I've probably missed a few but you get the point. Most, or all, other classes have double the amount on all of those.

would anyone like to tell the class what the pyro unlockables are? google is no help - it links to articles announcing the patch and speculation only. I am aware that there is an axe that is guaranteed to crit if someone is on fire. I also know from reading this thread that there is something called a 'backburner' but I can only guess what it might be. does more damage to someone's back? flames shoot out of your back? it burns a pyro who tries to burn you back?

yeah, I'm in your boat. I still resent the whole unlockables concept. maybe I'll play again when they finish all the classes. at least then I'll be able to play whatever class I feel like at the time and possibly make progress toward unlocking something.

I think the engineer ones are the only ones I'll actually try to unlock. I just wish it would give me retroactive credit for all the achievements I've undoubtedly already fulfilled the requirements for.

Personally I kind of want to find a way to reset all my achievements and stuff after everything is released and then just work towards them when I feel like. Then I won't have any of these situationally easy achievements (as in, achievements that are easy because everyone is one class due to the update)
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
The engie update will be fun.

Scene one: A desert landscape. A wooden bridge spans a small, water-bearing canal. Two buildings on each their side of the bridge face each other, one wooden, emblazoned with the Reliable Excavation Demolition company logo, the other brick and mortar, bearing the Builders League United Inc. logo. Tumbleweed blows by.

Scene two: Extreme close-up of an engineer's face, his features expressing resolve and determination. He moves aside, revealing the hayloft of the RED building. Four sentry guns busily scan their assigned vectors, as two other engineers run to and fro building dispensers and upgrading the sentry guns. Another engineer runs through the scene carrying a toolbox.

Scene three: BLU courtyard. Two engineers facing each other. A teleporter pad whirls in the background. An out-of-picture sentry gun beeps contentedly.
Engineer #1: "So... y'think them fellas'll be here soon?"

Scene four: Display splash screen: "The Engineer Update." Play sound effect: "team fortress 2 content.gcf -> root -> tf -> sound -> misc -> your_team_stalemate.mp3" (You failed, stalemate! *jeering*)

    Fin.

Having everyone the same class makes it significantly harder to get the achievements for that class. Seriously. The only achievement for the medic pack that was made any easier due to lots of medics running around was the "bonesawing medics" achievement.

Having loads of pyros running around is making it harder to get the pyro achievements too, simply 'cos pyros aren't all that effective against other pyros (so it's hard to get teh killz), although the pyro achievements are a hell of a lot easier to get than the medic ones to begin with so it kinda balances out (hell I got 6 of them in a 40 minute pub game, and I kinda suck). Except that "get the spy while he's taunting with the cigarette pack" one. I've never even seen a spy taunt outside of the pre-mach setup times.

The first two nights, there was a kind spy who ran around flicking cigarettes everywhere for us. On the other hand, the soldiers stubbornly refused to rocket jump.

The rocket jump one was the first one I managed to get, luckily. Happened to be running off a ledge when a soldier jumped up. Also managed to get the ragequit one and the taunt one fairly (although I did get the taunt one on an AFK guy, he was near their spawn and I had to do some fancy moves to get there, so I call it legit).
