Need help with new system

VERY VERY noisy
So I have something like seven 120mm case fans to keep it cool... and it's very loud. Some people in my house don't appreciate the sweet, Turbo-fan like sound of a computer.

I'm in dire need of help - I am forever losing information, downloads, virus scans and chatlogs to having my system shut down by people.

So what I'm looking for is some kind of program... either something that turns down my fanspeed after x amount of time, or something that puts my computer into a low power state mode like 'hibernation' in Vista, but keeps activities on the HDD and network going. (Unlike Hibernation) - so I don't lose downloads, etc.

Please helllp.

You could manually turn the fan speed down yourself when you sleep? Otherwise all I can think of is a new fan or just simply disconnecting a few fans while you sleep.

Do you need all seven fans? Also, if your case has one of those locking door things, lock it, and password the computer. People turning off your computer without your permission is not cool.

Just change the voltage they are running on. Do you know if they are running on 12 volts right now? You can tell by seeing if one of the fan wires is connected to the yellow power connector wire(this is the 12 volts wire). You can simply switch this wire to instead be connected to the 5 volt (red) wire, and the fan will run at a lower speed.
Or buy a fan controller thing, they have a whole bunch of nobs you can adjust for each fan once you wire them up.

You can buy a fanmate, a little device you couple on to adjust the fan voltages. And seriously, why on earth do you need 7 fans? 2-3 well-placed fans works alot better.

replace the noisy fans with quieter fans? i have 7 fans in my case (5 120mm, 1 80mm, 1 42mm) and it's hard to hear past my door. Also, rubber fan mounts for the win.

I doubt that would help. IF I was in the mindset that something was really annoying me, and I'm going to turn it off to get rid of the annoyance, then I would just hold down the power button on the front, or, failing that, unplug the computer.

Best thing to do is find fans which give out the least sound possible. Just ignore their air flow capabilities cause with so many fans it will hardly matter. Just go for fans which has the lowest decibel values.

The locking door covers the power button. Hopefully the computer is plugged in under a desk or something where the power cord is hidden; people don't really think about computers as having a cord that goes in to the wall that they could yank if they wanted to.

What planet you from? A desktop with seven fans they would! You could argue the point with a laptop as you can run it off of a battery easy enough. However I don't think the majority of people in this world are stupid enough to not think about yanking the plug out in that event.

If they can't get to the outlet, it doesn't occur to people that they can also unplug it at the PSU. Very few appliances work like that.

Anyway fanmate is a good thing and some Papst fans perhaps, I hear they are quite quiet.

No locking case door, I'm afraid... :/

Isn't there a program that'll shut off my fans, but keep my system active in some kind of low power mode?

Only if they are plugged into your motherboard. Yours are most likely just hooked directly onto your molex connectors correct?
Just change them to run on 5 volts, they will go about half speed which should quiet them down alot. Ill elaborate a bit more if you can give us a link to the type of fan they are, or explain how they are connected to your power supply.

I don't understand the point of 7 120mm fans either, unless you work in a sauna or are running an overclocked quad-sli config.. :| If you are that concerned with cooling, just go for water cooling which is quieter and better.
• SidSid Corwid of the Free Join Date: 2003-01-28 Member: 12903Members, Constellation
Yeah, they're Molex connections - and as for the fans - I only have 5 of them, not 7.

I do have an OC'd SLi and a Quad-core to keep cool, so I thought better cooling would be a good idea.

Anyways - I tried the program "Speedfan" - but to no avail.

As for the fans themselves, they are: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...ne%20Technology

Unfortunately, I did not get a case-fan adjuster.

"I thought better cooling would be a good idea." Thoughts don't equal facts: do you actually need the fans, or did you just think you needed them?
• XythXyth Avatar Join Date: 2003-11-04 Member: 22312Members
Right, they are 12 volt. You can swap the positive wire coming out of the fan so that instead of it hooking to the 12 volt (yellow) wire in the female connector, it hooks to the 5 volt (red) wire in the female connector. It's pretty simple, you can use a pin to remove the connectors whole.

because i can't buy a water kit for the same price as a four pack of 120mms? (and i don't have to rework the coolers on every single component i install)

7 is overkill though. 3 should be more than enough, because you also have the PSU, the CPU, and the videocard.

fans and locations:
- 120mm intake infront of harddrives
- 120mm aux behind harddrives
- 42mm baymount intake in hdd tray
- 120mm exhaust above video cards
- slot exhaust below video card
- slot exhaust below aux video card
- 120mm heatsink/fan on CPU
- 120mm psu intake
- 80mm psu exhaust

Is messing around with the wiring every time I want to make my system silent the only way to go?

No, listen, you DON'T NEED 7 FREAKING FANS. How hard is this? 7 is too many! 3 is generally more than enough! 4 is overkill! 5 is getting crazy! 6 is ludicrous! 7 is just... you don't need 7 unless you live in the desert. Outside.

Y'know it's better to have a water cooled pc for the price of 4 120mms than 7 fans which sound as loud as a dozen hoovers. Atleast you can keep your pc on overnight.

Well, I have 5, and I'm stuck with 'em it seems. Plus - they keep a quad core processor and two GPUs cool. I think it's worth it. I've had problems with heat in the past.

I cannot conceive of a realistic situation in which the fans are stuck in your case forever. I know they keep the case cool. They ought to. You can do that with fewer.

At this point somebody should photoshop a picture of a case consisting entirely of fans. Get on it!
