Scariest Games you've Played

Well i've played alot of scary games... all of which i enjoyed more than got scared <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> but i'll post the few game's that i think stood out among the others...

Condemned: Criminal Origins - after playing through and beating this game i can that since this i've beaten it... i haven't been scared once in real life, games, or movies....

The suffering - if creepy atmosphere is the thing that gets under your skin the most than this is definately your game, constantly offering different changes in environment, from the deep heart of a prison to the oceany shores of the prison island your stranded on, this game will at some point make you wanna say to yourself "No way i'm going in there"

Doom 3 - although more of an action shooter i did find some spots in this game enjoyable (and by enjoyable i mean scarey) you can get the most "Joy" out of this game by playing it in the dark, with the amount of things jumping out at you, the constant flow of the atmospere making the game creepier and creepier as you wade through it's creatively and skillfully designed levels making each new area a "Fun" experiance.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Although the game didn't do much for me in the scare factor i think it will scare others, the labs (which didn't scare me as much when i found out all the noises were caused by poltergeists which you can't see and don't really ATTACK you) were some scary area's, the thing that truly made them scarey though was when you thought you caught something on the edge of your eye and the maze like lab area's which seem to have plenty of twists and turns seem to make you more claustrophobic for every moment you spend wandering through the almost empty lab complex. Apart from the scare factor this game also offers a unique and quite fun gun asortment as well as a fun custimazation factor so you can add scopes, grenade launchers, and silencers to guns. (BTW, your first experiance is one that you'll truly never forget ;D )

Alone in the Dark: The new Nightmare - Probably the only survival horror game, and one of the only games to ever actualy scare me like Condemned did. This game is a masterpiece amongst the survival horrors, although it's over looked most of the time by other gamers who go after the more commercial games like resident evil, silent hill, and that whole lot, this game is far from being one of those bad over looked games. The story starts out as you being an investigator along with your accomplice (who's name i forget because i haven't played it in atleast 4 or 5 years) and your going to an island (i forget the reason why) when something latches onto your plain and causes it to crash forcing you to jump out with your accomplice with parachutes on. I should also tell you that in the beggining of the game you get to choose whether you want to be the woman accomplice or the private investigator (who starts out with a gun unlike the accomplice, so the choice is quite obvious) and although your female friend is armed with only a flashlight when you start out the developers worked around this small fact making it so that the light hurts most of the creatures or it stalls them causing them to keep away form you. The only thing i have to pick with this game is that the camera angles are static so aiming can be difficult in certain situations. another scary thing about this game is not only that it's incredibly dark more than 9 10ths of the entire game but that some of the monsters can turn invisible for short periods making each of there attacks surprising. The graphics are also better than expected from a game made in 2001. Out of all the games i've played either this or Condemned is the scariest game that i have ever played.

I didn't put down silent hill because for me, it wasn't that scary and i mostly got bored just wandering around trying to figure out what i had to do the whole time. Survival horror games don't really scare me at all. Although i did hear that silent hill 2 was much scarier along with 4...

    You've managed to make a thread on scary games without really including any games that are supposed to be scary.

    <b>The Suffering / Ties That Bind</b> were never really supposed to be horror games. There's a few points where they try to shock you, but for actual scaryness or creepiness, they fail. They're really fun action games though.

    <b>Doom 3</b> YOU TURN AROUND AND THERE iS AN IMP AND A LOUD NOISE

    <b>STALKER</b> was never really supposed to be scary although a little bit of wee did come out the first time you encounter those invisible guys.

    <b>Alone in the Dark: New Nightmare</b>. This isn't as bad as AitD 3, but dear god it's a terrible abortion of a game. The series has entered full-on franchise cash-cow milking mode. We join our plucky adventurer as he's pulling down his pants, readying himself to continue to rape and sully the good name that the Alone In The Dark name used to stand for. The later AitD games along with Uwe Boll's terrible movies have ruined this franchise, and the forthcoming game will be terrible.



    Playing the following is on your agenda: Fatal Frame / Project Zero, Fatal Frame 2 / Project Zero 2, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 4, FEAR, Alone in the Dark 1, Ecstatica, System Shock 2 (to an extent).

    AVP2, played at night in the dark it creates quite a good atmosphere.

    Other then driving a motorbike at 60+ not alot does it for me lol.

    Hmm, from what you said it seems like your an extreme critic, but i honestly don't think movie's can ruin game franchises. FEAR for me, meh, i bought it, beat it, didn't think it was really that scary, it had good combat though, but i mean the games i posted up there were games that i would recommend for people who want to get scared that i liked adn thought would scare other people. Several games you listed are about as scary as doing a quick run through of turok, i mean i've seen demo's, played demo's, seen trailers, and beaten some of those games and maybe 2 or 3 or the ones you listed were actualy scary.

    I think STALKER was meant to be scary - at least as much as System Shock 2 was... I was certainly scared by it at least a few times.

    the Thief games were pretty scary... the undead were scary enough to make a lot of people stop playing them =p

    Yeah, the marine missions in AvP2 were pretty scary. Even the first level where you don't even see anyone was rather scary at parts.

    AvP 1 scared me ######less as marine, neither did it help that it was so difficult too. At least when I was 12 or so.

    Penumbra Overture, scary atmosphere with "dynamic" shock moments got me to not finish the demo even.

    FEAR: Extraction Point had a better scare then the original but still mostly "meh".

    I'll agree that Doom 3 could make you jump when you weren't expecting it.. NS could have been scaryish if it didn't cater to the competitive scene of "lol its too dark, overbright maps!"

    Well you obviously didn't play it enough.

    It's far creepier with the background "i'm sorry", "silence the discord" and "your song is not ours" as they roam the ship, and don't even get me started on the matrons.

    AvP2 - The Marine campaign was filled with Atmosphere, the first couple levels were awesome.

    Thief 3: Deadly Shadows - The Shalebridge Cradle. Nothing more to say.

    FEAR - Really bleak and spooky atmosphere with some good jumps.

    Silent Hill 1/2 - Haven't played 3 or The Room yet, but anything Silent Hill probably doesn't leave your Pampers dry.

    3 is a continuation of 1 and it's a lot of fun, it has it's moments, but it's not as creepy as any of the others really.
    4 is so right in so many ways yet ultimately it fails. For atmosphere, art direction, music, sound, it is by far the best silent hill game, as for actual gameplay, not so much. It's also the scariest of the series. Over time, as your safe haven starts getting taken over, the feeling of losing your only safe place in the world really hits you hard, and ontop of that the game also has some immortal enemies that can pass through walls and finally, that goddamned bunny. That bunny scares the crap out of me.

    I'm not a real big fan of scary games- I used to get to scary parts and quit RIGHT NOW OH GOD NO

    But one that forced me to keep playing was The Darkness. It was consistently scary in the normal world, and still very scary when you went to hell. Awesome game.

    Ooh, I remember that bunny >_<

    I agree with SH4 and SS2 being the "scariest" I've played.. many other games have their moments though.

    Now there's a game that totally missed it's potential. It was a great game all the same, but there was so little horror and too much shooting. Being chased by the fishmen was perfect though, just a shame that so much of the game didn't live up to it's namesake.

    Calling SH4 the "scariest" out of the Silent Hill series is one of the biggest insults you can give it.

    Resident Evil did a decent job of it for me when I was younger with the lab in the guardhouse and the giant snake. I believe I've iterated these points in at least 2 other threads in this forum.

    Stalker is my new addition; it's the only recent game that has made me tense up and prepare for a potential battle and be extremely cautious, trying to find out when and where that attack is going to come (which can be the best way of getting a 'fear' response). Generally these parts only happen in underground sections...and I'm a bit immune to being scared by video games now, so there was really only deep tension once.

    Anyway: atmosphere in the end game is amazing, and you should play it without worrying about scare tactics.



    Finally: Doom 3 =/= scary. No matter what. The best you can give Doom 3 is shock, and that just gets tedious, repetitive and boring after about 3 minutes. Also, putting blood on <i><b>every</b></i> wall does not create atmosphere.

    AvsP2 is "scary" during the first few marine missions where you aren't really attacked, but the potential of an attack is lurking from the dark/unseen areas. Dunno what to call this kind of scare factor...

    But as soon as you get access to the bigger weapons, the game kind of evolves into a shoot'em up with some tense ammo/reload moments. Your acquired firepower actually takes some of the tension away. It is very cinematic though and that is always good in a game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> I certainly enjoyed playing the game.

    This actually translates into the alien part as well. In the first missions there is a scare factor, since you are quite easy to kill. But then you get bigger and better and the scare factor is diminished. For the predator there are quite a few alien encounters where you get quite literally swarmed by them.     I thought that those baby things (the cherubs) were creepy... And the blood on the walls.... what else would you expect from a demon infested lab base on mars? I for one thought it was a fun game, it had a a creepy atmosphere because of the very well done lighting, which seemed to make the game stand out more, i mean the mix in the background noises with tons of darkness and zombies hiding all over the place... That's pretty scarey... I especially thought the part where you had to go with that one guy who had the lantern from point a to point b was pretty intense since you were in complete darkness with shockwaves knocking out your flashlight for a small amount of time mixed in with noises to throw you off and when you got to the ladder, lol, i'll admit, i kind of jumped when that imp leaped at me from behind the ladder killing the guy with the lantern...

    Well, you may not think it's that scarey, but i thought it was a fantastic game.

    And <i>I</i> think that one guy getting freaked out does not make it scary. DooM3 is scary like a car backfiring is scary. It will make you jump, but that's it.

    I maintain that Mesh is a brave, brave man. He may scream like a sissy when playing Doom 3, but by the gods, he still plays it! If I had that kind of fear I would flat out refuse.

    I think you need to distinguish between 'fear' and 'scaredness'. Being scared is a much more superficial emotion, as in it kinda languishes on the surface of your conscious but it's usually usually quite fleeting. Actual fright is a much deeper emotion, it taps into your subconscious fears and permeates your whole psyche. Doom3 = scaredom, Realms of the Haunting = fear.

    In RotH you're in an empty mansion (it probably started production before RE was released as it followed just 1 year later) and the creatures are quite varied and all pretty eerie. The sound I remember being particularly good, and the FMV sequences help ramp up the immersion (contrary to what most would argue in post-HL2 era). It's also in a first-person perspective which really helps with the immersion factor. Lastly the game is 40 hours' long!     I also found the bit in Stalker (spoilers ahoy)
    <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>where you're approaching the brain scorcher up that winding hill path and the ghost creatures are attacking you and your vision gets all blurry</span> quite disturbing, the first time I've been disturbed by a game since forever. For the record I found Resident Evil (#1) 'scary' but not 'frightening'. I think it's because I always felt distanced from the character, disembodied by the third-person perspective.
