I wonder if an Alien Training map also will be created. I believe It'll be harder to do, but it would be great for people that wanting to be an alien. Of course, some alien things has been explained through this training. But not all the things.

    Got it to work.
And it's quite a fine piece.

    Problems I see are.

    1. Had to put it into windowed mode (Although this might be because of a botched install of RCBot)
    2. StartMenu icons don't work starts up as normal HL (But the installer "Play Now" works)
    3. The ammo room is relatively hard to get past.
Have to jump on crates, crouch under a light, and then crouch-jump up to the vent.

This is some thing greatly needed, because no matter what's said I refuse to believe combat can prepare players for the real Natural Selection. Some thing like this should of been released and highly emphasized in the original NS to get new players adapted quickly.

I was going to bring this topic up in the NS2 forum area. I really hope they impliment a solid trainer and make it mandatory or heavily emphasized to use it. Getting new players adjusted to the style of Natural Selection is very hard in a random server.

I am fairly new, and I must admit with my experience with NS Trainser wasn't very useful. These are some of the problems I experienced

-The instructor audio was too quiet, I could barely hear it and It skipped. A LOT like a scratched CD which, in result, the audio wasn't synced with the holographs and because of that the information was very misleading. And very confusing when a second voice started talking and there were two voices talking.

-When I got to the part where I needed to weld the vent cover, it took me about five minutes to realize you have to drop down underneath to get to the weld spot. A fairly huge inconvenience to a new player because he doesn't know where to go to weld when there is that huge weld Icon.

-The commander chair training was VERY poor, the whole reason why I got this NS Training program in the first place. The instruction audio covered to much stuff with no pause while you are trying to build the advanced sentry guns that most of it is forgotten and in result I spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to upgrade the phase tech. It didn't cover any of the structures like research labs or resource towers. It's just assumed that new players will know where to place those. It didn't cover how to order soldiers or supply them, or distribute weapons or how to develop upgrades for weapons and armor.

Overall this (in my opinion) is not a very good training program at all. I like the idea though on how it was pulled off plot wise and it did help, a little. not very much though.

Heya, AngelEyes. I'm the one who did the voice of Sergeant Edwards in the training map, along with the sound effects and a bit of the map testing for meat_popsicle. I've been away from the game for a long time now but came back to check out 3.2 beta, and now release. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I had the same sync problems after upgrading to 3.2. Uninstalling the training map and reinstalling after the upgrade solved everything for me.

I'll admit, the training map is not perfect, even when you get it working right. Simply put, the game isn't designed with a training map in mind. Meat Popsicle was already pushing the map system to its limits with what's in it already. There are actually some pretty creative and cutting edge hacks used to implement some of the features that are in the training map, as far as the HL1 engine is concerned. If more features had been available to map designers when the training map was made, the training map would have been more robust. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I don't know if he's still around, but if NS2 doesn't release with a training map, I'd want Meat Popsicle to do the design of a custom map like this one. I'd love to play Sergeant Edwards again too! (And I wouldn't be late with my voice files again, either! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" /> ).

Heyyyy dark hand! nice to see you're still around <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> I am definately gearing up towards an ns2 project (gotta learn how to model first) and will get in touch, dunno if im brave enough to attempt another training map tho, hopefully the dev's will take me seriously enough this time to have a proper chat with me about it

As for the current map, it was built for version 3 and i havnt tested it in on versions since so i apoligize if it is a bit tricky to get working

Unfortunately, NS is a massive game, to cover EVERYTHING in a training map, would not only be impossible due to the limitations of the mod but would take several hours to run through I expect. We also had zero input from the ns dev team, so we tried to stick to the stuff we felt important and this is what we came up with, which yes isnt perfect but is far more than what most people thought was even possible from a mapping perspective <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

could someone send me the sprites folder from this map and i should be able to create a simple patch to get it working on 3.2 as currently the half-life\ns\sprites\ns_training isnt installing for some reason

The main things that I didn't like about this map was that the voice acting wasn't very good and the holo room part was too long

Im seriously impressed, its fun to play even if you know the information being told already, i wish i had this when i first played ns. Maybe add a skulk to shoot at?

Brilliant work, hope you make single player mods for ns tbh <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Downloaded it, installed it, played it. Frankly i'm quite impressed with the work that you guys have done with this. It reminds of the first level of the original Halo game. I also learned some things that I didn't know before like that the kharaa start out as bacteria. Great work! Can't wait for the alien version.

edit- i noticed one bug. when the informational session on the kharaa ends i walked up to the holo-projecter and got stuck on it.

This is a pretty sweet map you made man. You should make one for the aliens too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />... even though this thread is 3 years old. Hehe.
