It would be nice to see more female players playing. The numbers have dwindled on YO to the point where there's only princess and possibly Nick, if the operation went right... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Still interested in this topic? Check out the latest blog, it has some pictures that IMHO would be cool if we had some of the ladies who responded to this thread take a look at, get some feed back on that blog to see if it would be encouraging or discouraging to playing NS2.

Gorgeous artwork and really cool concepts. I think my input at this point is "I'd kinda rather they weren't there... but if there's going to be gender selection anyway, this is what I would've wanted." It doesn't scream "OMG I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR" or "teehee I am the medic because women fail at combat," very slick and looks just as efficient as the male counterpart.

Also, it reminds me of Deunan from Appleseed, and she was awesome.

    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I agree.

I am beginning to think Max (and other devs too?) is regularly reading and genuinely listening to the threads in the NS2 I&S and Discussion forums. If so, listening to feedback like that while it may be sour to the taste to force oneself to listen to public advice and criticism is only going to make NS2 that much more awesome. I really believe in that. Kudos to the NS2 team for listening to their fans! So here's to you: We <!--coloro:#CC33CC--><span style="color:#CC33CC"><!--/coloro--><3<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> you too, cheers!

I think this is a good time for the I&S, if it's finally becomming the reliable feedback system between developers and their fans then these two forums are the incarnation of the goal I had trouble getting Zunni to agree with me on.

Seeing how this thread has turned with some of the replies, I kind of lost interest in reading it at all.

All I can say is NS is an FPS shooter game. Take all FPS shooter games and look at how many women/girls play them and you will see the estimated ratio amount of NS female players. They just don't play FPS shooters (sure there are exeptions in everything but to base a marketing strategy based on exceptions may be a waste of time).

However I do understand X5`s point and congradulate him in trying to do so.

Support, command, and intelligence roles have nothing to do with FPS gameplay and they exist in spades in NS.

All I've got to say is:

The day when the male gamers learn to keep their ######s in their pants whenever a female gamer gets on; that's the day when more female gamers will appear.

But, since the scenario mentioned above is anything but realistic - it will of course never happen.

several comments after being away for a while and reading several pages of posts.

A female player model IMO will add some to the game for those that want it. For those of us more interested in the game play It will not change a whole lot. i see player models in 2 modes human and not human. Which one my brain tries to kill depends on what side I am on. To be honest how many of you notice the difference in the black and white marine models? i know that I do not anymore. They just add to the atmosphere I guess. I just expect people to look a little different. and they do. If I was playing in a 3rd person view I might care more but all I can see of my model is a gun and my hands. I haave spent hours and hours playing Guild Wars and generally played Female Models because I thought they were better done. It doesnt mean I want to be one so trip off you trolls. My clan didnt think anything of it and we had a fair number of women playing in that game. Either way, I think that more varience in the models will add to the atmosphere but will eventually be less of a factor in actually gameplay so who cares.

As to girl gamers. I am 35 yo. I was around for the late great days of the BBS's. I have been here since computers were the land of the nerds. The current generation doesnt remember there ever NOT being computers. They are now as common as telephones or cars. This means that they are all (male AND female) growing up using them. When you are sitting at a computer you can be either gender or no gender at a whim. This all means that the female player base of games in general will become MUCH more equilized as time goes on. Admittedly, most of the "guy chases girl" antics you see online are due to the player ages involved. Teens tend to have more free-time and less responcibilites then us older folks. They are interested in chasing each other around so that is what they do. As the current generation ages and even more of them go into true adulthood you will see less of this going on as the demographics of the online population change. Computer Games are becoming more and more acceptable as a form of entertainment for both genders and all ages. (ask Flyra about my friend Grandma Juju sometime if you get a chance)

kinda rambling but hopefully it makes sense. Girls play games, some of them really are here to frag (and are better than you at it), and there WILL be more of them online as the years go by. The topic of this thread is indeed an important topic already being debated in boardrooms around the world so get used to it.

    So you're 35 eh? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Actually you make several good points BonesX, from the fact that most people my age have always known computers to it simply being an age and social factor thing of guys chasing girls (hey it goes the other way too sometimes, rarer from my experience but it can). Thank you for posting that obviously well thought out post.

I think you guys are missing the point.. The gender of the player base isn't important at all, it's the quality and the size that matters. If the community gains a few more girl gamers in NS2, awesome, but that alone really doesn't get us anywhere. What you SHOULD be hoping for are new players that can grasp the complexity of NS2, stick with it, and become able bodied teammates, not more girls to flirt with over the mic. Don't get me wrong though, I'd like to see more girls start playing this game too, but gender is really a very minor aspect when it comes down to what we need more of in the NS community.

Sirus, man. That's pretty damn sexist. I know at least 4 female players who are way more aggressive than half the adolescent males I see flood the servers with < 1 kill ratios. In fact, one of the best shooters I know is a girl. I've <i>never</i> seen her in a server without dominating.

Also, I disagree with the idea of specializing marine roles. A key contrast between the two sides is that the Kharaa choose a specifc task at a time, and Frontiersmen are interchangeable. It's a fundamental aspect of gameplay.

I believe the point is to simply expand the player base. Not to cater to one (gender) group, but to the masses. At this point, since all the models are male, expansion means including some females.

One more girly answer to this thread:

I've been playing NS for quite some time now, for years, that is. I used to be pretty addicted to the game, even my work suffered. Then I got so disappointed with my fellow countrymen basically ruining every game, so I started running my own server, just be able to fight with bots, which eventually became my favorite teammates.. no life even in nolife..

Well, anyway.. If NS2 wants to hug girls, then there must be something that most girls are into in gaming: building. Think of all the games girls (including myself) like: Sims 2, Sim City, Tycoon games.. what do they have in common? BUILDING! What else? God-complex: Rule the world!

    My favorite maps on NS were classic maps where I could build <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

But keeping the game manly won't stop me playing or buying it. Catering for girls isn't really necessary unless the tycooning stuff is offered, which is, in lack of a better word, useless in this kind of game.

    But that's just my opinion. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

These most girls you are talking about... Have you really asked all your (gamer) friends about what in a game that attracts them?
Sure, it's quite true that most of the females play The sims and Tychoon etc. But The N-S theme of future technology, robotics and hi-tech firearms versus scary aliens are mostly focused on males. Just look at the Transformers movie. They just had to put in a little Romance for the girls, or they wouldn't want to watch it. Mainly because More Boys than girls like big awesome robots, war and explosions.

We shouldn't make any changes to the game to make it more attractive to girls. Most girls I

    <.<

    >.>

Forced to try NS actually liked it because it offered more focus on teamplay than ex: Counter-Strike or Battlefield, and never asked about a female model or customable models. Saying a female model for NS would attract more female players, will be like saying that girls only talk about makeup and flowers. Females have different interest which are reflected in the type of game they enjoy playing. I will end my post before i go completly of track.

I think the last survey probably only surveyed america and a few night owls from other countries.

Heya. I don't like the Idea of a female Playermodel.
Even while it's only a Game, do you never watched Tentacle Hentai?
Go Figure why I do think Terra-HQ wouldn't use any Women in Field - maybe as Distant Officer/Commander or Supervisor, but definitely not in Combat with still unknown Lifeforms whose Research hasn't been completed.
Then again, it could be like Warhammer 40k's 'the Damned' or Star Craft's Space Marines.
But I do think it's already established that TSA Marines are "Humanitys Best".

Before I left NSone, I knew a nomadic (as in no paid Server) FunClan of Gals that played NS and where happy with it as it was. I lost contact to them, so I can't ask if they still think it's good or not.

I’m guessing you have never seen Aliens (1986) or Starship Troopers (1997). There’s a whole load of women in those, that would kick you’re a** any day of the week!

In fact a lot of sci-fi games and movies in recent years have strong female characters in them, the Alien Quadrilogy, the UR series, HL2, Resident evil (Films), Ghost in the shell, Bucky O’Hare, to name just a few that are sitting around me right now. It’s almost the mentality of big sci-fi franchises to have strong female characters in, look at Star Trek and Star Wars. Both have strong leading female characters in. I haven’t even mention Lara Croft, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye (film), Azumi 1 and 2, Kill Bill 1 and 2, The Matrix (films and games), The Simpson’s, Futurama, and many, many more. It would be foolish not to include an option to be a female character in the game.

I think it’s stupid and very sexist to say that women aren’t in NS1 because they aren’t "Humanitys Best", which is clearly what you are implying by saying that in this context.

This is a general description towards the TSA itself where the Marines (Male <b>AND</b> Female) are denied to be Criminals like the former quoted Section was suggesting.

Hell, went this Community realy that hard down the drain? -_-

Erm, the female player is definitely happening, fyi. They have the concept all picked out and everything. Wouldn't be surprised if someone is modelling and iterating on it right now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I, for one, welcome our new female counterparts.
