Armed Assault: Tactical Military Simulator (and shooter ;p)

Have you tried it? What do you think? Care to comment anyways? >.>
www.armedassault.com

I've been looking for a pretty realistic shooter for an extremely long time, and it seems like I might finally have found one I enjoy. Its not released for the US yet (screw you, Europe!) but I've only heard good about it. However, the one piece of bad I ever heard was from someone commenting on the (multiplayer only) demo, so apparently the demo is not-too-nice. The server browser is glitchy and its hard to get into a game, from what I've heard.

I'm reinstalling the demo as we speak. My first download was corrupt, and if my second is as well I have a feeling I might end up illegally obtaining this game for a demo try when it does come out, and then if I like it, go buy the real thing. I'd feel terrible at keeping stolen goods, makes me a terrible plunderer. t-t But it does give me a whole host of demos to pick and choose from. ^_^

Anyone actually played this game? Looks pretty good. Comments? :3

Guess you can't really comment on something you can't play. =P

Upgrade DirectX and try again. I'm holding off until the US retail version; I think the reasont hey haven't released yet is because it still needs polishing, which makes complaining about bugs a moot point. You're right, though; I heard the demo is a nightmare. I hang out at tacticalgamer.com where they go for realistic games a lot, and some people have imported one version or another, and the actual game is supposed to be pretty awesome, although rather buggy. Which of course is what they're rectifying for the American one.

Its out here. the one thing I've heard is bugs and the fact you need a super pc to run it. you need a pc that can run bf2 on high and then some. aside from that its awesome. operation flash point is also worth a look if you can't run it. But if you can run it get it.

I can run BF2 at 100fps constant at max settings. I cant even get 30 fps with low detail in this game. Max settings I get like 5 fps. This is with the demo, so maybe they improved the games performance.

OFP had that problem too. It was fugly, but it had hefty requirements.

Being from europe I can assure you the retail have significent better performance then the demo. Still it takes quite alot to get acceptable fps in some areas (lots of grass etc), IIRC there are some settings which afffects fps alot more then others (shadows?). Gotta go right now but I'll write a bit more what I think about arma later.

The demo they released is pretty much regarded as crap, and they're working on a new version of the demo to coincide w/ the stateside release of the game.

There's a guy on the Shack that's pretty much the unofficial non-employee community liaison or something. He has a lot of posts showing off the awesome stuff that's in ArmA, a lot of it is new stuff not in the demo. I don't think he actually works for the company doing it, but he runs a pretty popular site about it and also gets non-public builds and stuff.

    Also, ArmA is not fuguly:

Keep in mind that these are all ingame, and on the aerial shots that these are the same maps where troops are on the ground fighting. Also keep in mind that the main game is ground based w/ infantry; the aerial stuff is all I could find quickly.

Also I hear that buildings can actually blow up though I've not been able to verify that through any shots/video.

All the demo really does is demonstrate the bare (buggy) basics of what you're going to be dealing with once the game comes out - its not terribly fun, I would call it a technology demonstration more than an actual entertaining playable demo if anything. But from what I've gathered while I played the demo, and from what DOOM has posted (thanks a ton man, very interesting stuff!), I know that I will be picking this game up ASAP as soon as it comes out.

If anyone is wanting any feedback based on the demo, the movement mechanics of the game, to me, feel very... natural; they feel very realistic. Its not a "free" feeling you might get with other FPS's such as Half-Life or Quake, but instead your movement feels very attached to your own self. Combined with a (rather expensive) TrackIR headset, and I can imagine this game to be extremely immersive for anyone. Movement wise, this game is a must have for die-hard realism gamers. Imagine Rainbow-Six (Raven Shield, not Vegas), merge it with America's Army, and then splice a little Red Orchestra in (this all based on my experiences, of course). Thats the best I can describe it. If you want to see for yourself, I implore you to download the demo and run around a bit.

The feeling of the weapons in the demo was extremely disappointing. The muzzle flash was unimpressive and the kick of the weapon seemed off time with the actual shot itself. The reload animations are promising, but they need smoothing out and bugs fixed.

The environment is absolutely amazing. There is no question about it.

My favorite parts of the game: being able to actually raise and lower my weapon from a shouldered position; being able to look down and see my feet; using the free look key while I ran, so my direction of movement wasn't changed; the look of the entry and exit wounds - very convincing, very brutal, very awesome; the feeling while inside a vehicle, its very immersive; the fact that an AI squad will be incorporated into online play for every player (I assume there will be a toggleable option to turn this on and off); how I can hold my breath when aiming through the ironsights for a steady shot; not having a completely unrealistic cone of fire - my weapons are accurate!; the extreme difficulty of running and gunning - its almost completely impossible (I would say completely impossible, but never say never!); the in depth contour line map as well as a sexy ###### compass which I used to know how to use.

I'm officially in love with this game.

Keep in mind that in reality you often aren't able to see muzzle flashes at all, which might explain why they aren't very impressive ingame.
  • HazeHaze O RLY? Join Date: 2003-07-07 Member: 18018Members, Constellation
You cant? Ah. That explains it then - thanks. Why can't you see 'em?

Daylight is generally much brighter than a muzzleflash from the shooter's perspective. At night, it's a different matter.

Had my first firefight today. While the demo is a bit buggy, once you get the controls down it feels like second nature (just as anything else). The lag was terrible, so my bullets hit two seconds after they left my rifle, but thats not the point - the firefights in this game are pretty awesome. We were fighting eachother in extremely close quarters, on opposite sides of a destroyed jeep. We were leaning back and forth from the sides and popping shots off. I got hit in the arm, and I could see my entire arm caked in blood as my aim suffered. I shot him in the leg then, causing him to collapse onto the ground, unable to run. Then, ever so slowly, I circled around the side of the jeep (walk on, ironsights up) and shot him one last time in the chest.

    Very action packed.

But keep in mind the demo is nowhere near a representation of what the game will run like.

    This is my favorite screenshot:

Canada gets games at the same time as the US, right? That means it's not out where you live.

Personally I think the demo sucks and should be used only as a 'tech demo.'
