<div class="IPBDescription">Ns community, I seek your wisdom and guidance.</div>
Shzam! I suddenly found Soldier of Fortune and Might and Magic® VII on some store in Norway. The price was 20 kr (around $2) for both. Of course as the retro gamer I am, I could not resist.

Spending the entire way home thinking of names of my soon to be acquired druid, paladin, sorceress and warrior. I found myself thinking of what I saw on back of the Might and Magic® VII cover. For WINDOWS 95/98

Had i been tricked? Fooled by the demon behind the counter. Had I payed $1 for absolutely NOTHING?

I used 3 whole hours of blood and sweat to get Red Alert (With Counterstrike and Aftermath) to work, where I to be forced to repeat the torment again?

I installed the program straight forward, and launched the game.
<img src="http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s254/Mats_photo/BLARGH.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
"Hmm... anything seems to be in order" I thought

Suddenly the screen flashed in black and then...
<img src="http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s254/Mats_photo/Utennavn.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

AARRGH! CHURCH!

I prayed to god that this was just a result of a failed installation. I reinstalled. NO the screen remained the same, so did the error message.

NO! I didn't give up. I googled for half an hour or so. Obviously, many other people had the same problem as me. Might and Magic® won't work on WIN XP HOME.

LIES! I shouted at my computer. I had observed my buddy playing it at a earlier occasion.

After some time i found this:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->MM7 -First run MM7 configuration utility and change to software 3d. Go to your MM7 directory and right click MM7.exe and choose properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Go to compatibility mode area and click run this program in compatibility mode. Then choose Windows 98/ME and click okay. Then goto the start menu, then run, and type dxdiag. Click the sound tab. Then under directx features move the slider all the way down to no acceleration Hardware sound Acceleration level. Now run the game. You will need the cd.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I did exactly what this man said. Again I launched the game only to find the message

"MM7 has a problem and needs to close"

All was lost.

Suddenly I remembered. Why not ask the Natural-Selection Community. They're wisdom had helped me out of several tricky cases before.

And so I did.

Now NS community. NOW I SEEK YOUR GUIDANCE!
With the $1 gone for ever, how am I now supposed feed my starving family?

Now, only wait and pray I will...

I`ve got it to run before on my XP computer and I think it took a little more than just the emulation mode thing to run it. Either that, or it ran perfectly fine on my computer.
[MM7 is an awesome game. In fact, the whole MM Series is. Pity they`re focusing on HoMM instead of MM]

Do you have the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24da89e9-b581-47b0-b45e-492dd6da2971&DisplayLang=en" target="_blank">Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit</a>?

Hmm, winXP an its dreaded "refusing to run retro games" attitude has to change! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

anyway, not sure if this little program will work for MM7, since it needs a windows95/98 environment, but DOSBox has helped me run many old games in winXP

    <a href="http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1" target="_blank">http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1</a>

Might and Magic 4,5: World of Xeen is the last supported game of the MM series. So I think it wont work on MM7. But if you have any other old retro games they might work with DOSBox. So this probably isn't a solution for your current problem, but might be for your future retor gaming adventures...

Just read something about VirtualPC, it will make another OS, say windows 98SE, run virtually inside your windows XP.

    <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...pc/default.mspx</a>

Free trial it has, but yknow MS. They love to make money of their own incompatibility problems with older programs <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Those filthy Microsoft demons...

must they burn in the depths of hell

How do i use this "Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit"

when I cannot even assign a SQL server or something... the window just remains black...

Soldier of Fortune is btw a great game. you out there that for some reason haven't tried it yet. it is awfully entertaining

I cannot seem to get The virtual PC thingy to work on Home edition...

    It sorta locks up..

Apparently, turn off 3D audio and disable 3D acceleration and turn off compatibility mode. If it still doesn't work, try changing your graphics settings to 16-bit colours instead of 32-bit.

I just installed my MMVII and with software 3D, and the accelerated 3D audio disable it works fine without needing any emulation. This is with Win XP home. Sooo, are you sure nothing is wrong with the discs? Were they new or used?

Also, do you have SP2? Have you patched the game? If you google it, you'll find it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Being the only forum with a certain odd solution to an obscure technical problem is a great way to attract new folks, I guess. The power of Google compels you!

wheelz, you should totally stick around now that you've gone through the trouble of registering an account here. Heck, preorder NS2! It'll be an awesome game.
