Looking for a good Dungeon Crawler

<div class="IPBDescription">I've been craving one... have any ideas?</div>Hey guys, I've been rather bored lately... I guess I'm running out of things to play. *Looks at his PS3 collecting dust in the corner.* >.>;

Now, I'm looking for a good Dungeon crawler... ie: Go to town, buy health potions, weapons/armour, go to Dungeon, kill, go to town... rinse and repeat. Ie. Diablo, etc...

I guess I'm looking for a good action rpg:

Something along the lines of the Diablo series... but not.

-Randomly generated levels are a plus.
-Good graphics aren't necessary, but are a welcome addition.
-Huge variety of suffix and prefix based weapons are nearly a must.
-Story is optional.

Any RPGs that fulfill the above requirements are great. I've tried the whole Neverwinter Night's-thang... I just want a game that I don't really have to devote months upon months playing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time,
-Sid

    Diablo.

    Oh... wait.

    Dungeon Siege? 1 or 2

    Sacred (similiar to diablo)

Not sure what you mean with suffix and prefix based weapons.
  • Dirty_Harry_PotterDirty_Harry_Potter Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9500Members
Suffix and prefix based weapons are probably like..

Holy Sword of eternal smiting +3
Holy being a prefix, and of eternal smiting +3 a suffix..

Anyway, there's also Titan Quest. Though it doesn't have randomly generated levels, however it has a somewhat neat class system - you create your class by picking 2 masterious, which in a way are classes of their own.

    tl;dr

is oblivion out of the question?

    oblivion, i recommend.

it will devour many minutes of your time

I'd say Oblivion with the <a href="http://jorgeoscuro.googlepages.com/home" target="_blank">Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul</a> totally refreshes oblivion if you already beat it. Just make sure you don't use the slow level mod part of it..

I had a bad experience with Oblivion: After taking 48 hours of my time to clean my computer, download alls orts of nifty mods for Oblivion and everything... Tried to run it and all my nifty mods conflicted and killed my game. I'm pondering a reinstall with Fransesco's Oblivion mod.

Also, I did the Titan Quest thing and had a lot of fun with it - lovely graphics! ...But something just felt missing from it.

    What's Sacred like? When was it made? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

And Icewind Dale... isn't that kind of like Baldur's Gate?

I beat both Dungeon Siege games... #2 just felt like a rehash of #1, sadly. :/

<a href="http://www.thangorodrim.net/" target="_blank">Angband</a> if you prefer Diablo 1 (or if you really like Tolkien).

    <a href="http://www.adom.de/" target="_blank">ADOM</a> or <a href="http://ivan.sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">IVAN</a> if you prefer Diablo 2.

If it absolutely has to be an ARPG (you're making a huge mistake), try Phantasy Star Online.
  • pardzhpardzh Join Date: 2002-10-25 Member: 1601Members
Icewind Dale has less story than Baldur's Gate. It was designed to be a hack n' slash D&D dungeon crawl.
  • SidSid Corwid of the Free Join Date: 2003-01-28 Member: 12903Members, Constellation
Angband reminds me of Dwarf Fortress.

And I'll look in to Icewind Dale. I remember reading about it before D2 came out, and it was claimed as the "Diablo 2 Killer before Diablo 2 was even released." But, of course, it looked as if it got washed away upon the release-tide of Diablo, as usual..

You have to play through it first without any mods.

TQ has such a good engine... too bad it's so imbalanced, short, easy to hack/dupe, and cheat to the final final boss.

not much help right at the moment but you might want to keep an eye on Hellgate:London. It's being developed by the team behind diablo (who all left blizzard in disgust when vivendi got their clutches on the company) and there's plenty of action, rpg and blowing seven shades of ###### out hell's legions :3

I've not played it personally but <a href="http://www.dungeonrunners.com/" target="_blank">Dungeon Runners</a> might be worth checking out too. It has the advantage of being free to play with the option to pay if you want extra stuff like the most powerful items or other 'member' exclusives.
Like I say though... I've not played it, so don't blame me if it's not great XD

I'm trying to get back in to Oblivion. (I went light on the mods this time). I don't know.. I'm just getting an overwhelming 'meh' feeling about it... it seems to have lost it's pizazz.

I am, however, feeling up for some Titan Quest... even more so now that I found out that I still have my old saved game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Had same problem as you Sid, DLed tons and tons of mods then the game crapped on itself and I had various bugs going around.
Solution: DL the mod conflict plugin, it will auto detect if there is any mods conflicting when you run it.

    Sacred (released 2004) Screenshots/patches: <a href="http://eng.sacred-game.com/index.php" target="_blank">http://eng.sacred-game.com/index.php</a>

Wikipedia has the map: <a href="http://www.gigagames.hu/sacred/kepek/world_map.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.gigagames.hu/sacred/kepek/world_map.jpg</a> <- You start in the east of the green plains.

Sacred is much like diablo (same view), you run from town to town, down in caves and dungeons but mostly out in the open. The map is huge and I never went to explore it all (or complete the game) since it just took too much time.
Remember the first time I played, I had just completed the training and was about to leave the first town. Outside there were orcs and whatnot and I thought "hey ur up for some clobbering!" and almost got myself killed on the first 3. I returned later with a horse and knowledge that there is a town just a bit west. So I ran with my horse as fast as I could ignoreing enemies all the way to the town (every single enemy was on a trail after me). When I got in to town I thought "haha suckers now the guards will bash you good".
The guards got killed as a bunch of flies and the orcs came running after me. I managed to battle my way inside a house and lock the door, then just sitting there in a corner waiting for help...

Moral of story: Dont play as Battlemage first time.

My friend was gladiator and he got 4 times longer then me on 1/4 of the time.

Otherwise there is alot of weapons, items, quests, skills, enemies and twists. I dont really remember the story but it should be pretty clear after the intro. Prefix and suffix weapons are included.
Oh and it has this weapon which kills enemies on sight which are below a certain level of you, very good when going back to older towns and such. This is to spare you SOME mindless killing/grinding.

Sacred is pretty cool, but I got bored of it pretty quickly.

wasn't Summoner kinda in the same category?

and what was that game that was also similar to Diablo/Sacred, but you had a party, I think there were skill/spell trees, I remember you started on a beach as a recruit in some army, with your friend as your first party member... anyway, whatever game that was, it was fun and worth playing through at least once.

well.... lineage2 is huge on grinding and has the types of weapons your looking for

you can have certain weapons with certain SA's such as

Acumen=faster casting speed when holding this weapon casting speed will increase ect
you can also enchant weapons with them having a chance to break after you enchant it to +3 but after +3 they will start to glow ect

or you can try age of conan, if its even out yet? o_O not sure lol.

And I've heard good things about Divine Divinity. (Best title ever). >.>

I you havn't played Fallout I recommend (read command) you do so within the next 48 hours. It's somewhat relevant to your wishes (randomly-ish generated dungeons at random encounters).

I Love fallout! Oddly enough, the much hated "Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel" for the PS2 was actually one of my favourites.

He mentions FA:BoS and you see FA2 as WORSE? Sure FA2 didn't do just as good as FA1 but imo FA2 held good quality.

You are my hero for today.

By the way, if you haven't played Diablo 2 on hardcore mode, that's probably worth a try. I played the hell out of Diablo 2 when it came out, and then later on replayed the hell out of it with a friend with harcore characters (3 total for me before we were both able to beat the game through Hell difficulty). They've done quite a lot with patches on that game too, so if you haven't played it recently you may be missing out on some cool stuff.

    Contribution +1

I considered Fallout 2 to be more enjoyable/open ended/satisfying then Fallout 1, but that may have something to do with the fact that I played Fallout 2 before I played Fallout 1, and I had become accustomed to the "Take all" button and other nifty features.

The story for Fallout 1 was far better though I must say... the Master is... creeeeeepy.

I played Hardcore to level 40... then my Pally died from some stupid lightening-area-shocking creature. It wasn't even a boss or a demi-boss. :/

However, I did like laughing when I saw the "So and so was killed by Monster" message, hehe. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
