I've had a couple days of experience with the Wii so far, and I have to say it has been the most grievous series of disappointments I've ever encountered with a gaming console. First, I wanted to buy one as a first day Hanukkah gift, but Sam's Club was out of them so I had to wait until someone returned one to the store, which wasn't until two days later.

Then, after about only eight hours of non-continuous playtime the poorly constructed controller ripped apart while I was playing, causing serious injury to our two-year-old daughter's eye and a traumatic visit to the hospital at 9 in the evening.

Not long after that, our copy of Wii Sports "mysteriously" disappeared. Colin had some friends over, and one of them was an African American that doesn't go to Colin's school. If any of you are black, I'm not saying you people all steal, I'm just saying I very much doubt one of his white friends would have taken it.

So all in all I'd say if you're thinking about buying a Wii for the holidays, think it over very carefully before you do, because in my experience it is not worth the trouble.

You dirty troll you. But really, from what I've seen it's you that needs to be afraid of the "poorly constructed controller", this thing is exceptionally tough if you frequent www.wiihaveaproblem.com.

Haha, I love that site. I think it's sad though that Nintendo handled the whole wrist strap thing so well IMO and they're stilling getting slammed for it in the media as if it's a major problem. In a country where guns don't kill people you'd think wii-motes wouldn't break T.V.s ...

weee... not posted in a while, been too busy :p

I just got my free Xbox 360 Premium Pack bundled with Gears of War from work and it's spent the last 3 days gathering dust as I play Zelda on the Wii.
I bought Rainbow Six Vegas though to play online with my RL friends (terrorist hunt is fun) so once Zelda is completed it'll probably see more use :3

As for the whole 'Wiimotes of destruction' thing I think it's just a backlash from not having much else to complain about. All the 'haters' who blindly support one console over others have to find something to bash their 'competitors' for and for the Wii it looks like they're holding the Wiimote up high as their thing.
For PS3 haters they'll bash the price and for 360 haters... I'm not quite sure what they'll bash really; guess it depends on what 'camp' they stupidly belong to.
Silly Console haters will just bash all 3 XD

Just downloaded the Wii Opera browser. Using it to write this.
It's good so far, predictive text makes it slightly easier to use.

    Edit -

Because it takes too long to type, i'm back to posting this with PC.

Opera browser passed the ACID2 test perfectly.

    Edit2-

Flash also works perfectly from what I've tested so far.

There's a trial version at the moment which is free till June, full version comes out in May, after that it's 500 Wii points (Around £4/$5)

Considering how cheap it is, it's worth it.

Maybe the Wii will get more people to convert to Opera on their PC. I'm tired of being in such a small marketshare group. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

not to impressed with the internet channel so far. It definitely will not replace a standard browser by any means. Some how the thought of typing giving me carpal tunnel doesn't sound appealing.

Yes, I typed this on the wii.

The good news is, there are a pair of USB ports on the back of the Wii... so I'd imagine there is already or will soon be support for USB keyboard/mouse. Someone will probably also release a keyboard peripheral that plugs into the Remote.

Pff, notice how Nintendo tried to create a "pure gaming machine" and yet they included a browser? Also, they didn't even include a DVD player.

Nintendo really needs to decide, because right now they're marketing it as a gaming machine not a multimedia machine, so they're pretty much stuck in a web of hypocrisy.

Well I finally got my Wii yesterday, and oh man is it fun. I have been playing Zelda non stop, really tiring when you have loads of enemies around... SLASH SLASH SLASH *arm falls off*

Wii sports is also great fun, I've managed to get my whole family into gaming, including the parents and they are hooked on the bowling and golf.

DVD playback was pulled from the Wii for the same reasons that it wasn't in the Gamecube. It was pulled because it would have added to the system costs. Nintendo does use DVD technology for their discs, however, they are able to avoid actually having to license the technology by having the discs be written and read backwards (From the outside of the disk inwards, as opposed from the inside of the disk outwards). Pulling DVD playback was not a matter of making it a "pure gaming machine" it was a matter of keeping the system profitable under the promised price point.

Adding a web browser however really isn't an issue. The system already had internal memory and a built in wireless internet connection. After that its a matter of developing and selling the software.

The key thing is that what you buy is a gaming machine. You can fork out for extra functionality later but what you buy in the box is pretty much a dedicated games machine based off what's in there; it may have the capabilities for more but you're not forced to pay for them unless you want to.

Compare this to the Playstations where I ended up having to pay extra for features I never wanted nor use like the ability to play DVDs. I've got a DVD player already, why the flibble would I want another? :p

If sony started releasing cheaper Playstations that were purely made for gaming with all the extra guff being optional add-ons that would be great.

I'm totally against Microsoft's Core and Premium system idea though; the lack of harddrive on the Core acts as a handicap for games designers as they're required to make sure their games work on the shoddy lil core system instead of just being able to use the harddrive to cache stuff and run it better.

    My Wii console number is:

Anyone wanna send a message? The messaging abilities havent really been stressed enough by nintendo, they couldve put alot more effort in to use the online ability, seeing as they included a wireless adapter.

Wahoo its Christmas, and I got 2 new Wii games, Wii Play and NFS: Carbon. I also went out and bought Red Steel yesterday.

    Verdict:

Wii Play - Originally I bought it for the free remote, but after playing it I have found it to be one of the most fun games I have on the Wii.

NFS: Carbon - Controls are a bit annoying, and you spend more time trying to concentrate on holding the steering wheel properly than actually playing the game.

Red Steel - Major letdown. My mate kept hyping me that it was really fun, and all the review sites said it was horrible; because of this I bought the game to have my own opinion. The controls are really frustrating as the enemies seem to shoot you through the smallest of gaps and are always hiding for cover, and you are left there trying to walk around the horribly placed architecture whilst also aiming and shooting.

My advice to you would be to try and stick with it. There are some awesome set-pieces later on and you'll start to get the controls down to a tee.

    Then it becomes awesome <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Get Trauma Center: Second Opinion if you can.

Also, about games that have bad reviews but have some people that like it, you should rent those games first before buying.

My brother (on my girlfriend's recommendation) got me Twilight Princess for Christmas. (: I never saw it coming! Awesome though, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'd still be playing, but I decided to stop -- I promised my GF I'd start a new game so she could watch when she gets home, and there's no point in continuing further into the game if I'm just going to restart.

After listening to my girlfriend's granddaughter play on her Wii all morning, I have only one question.

Is there <b>ANY </b>way to change that Super Mario-like background music to something less annoying? <img src="http://www.ibparcade.com/style_emoticons/default/chair.gif" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

I'm guessing you mean the Mii channel music. ^^ My dad asked the same thing, but he stopped paying attention to the music shortly after he started putting together his own Mii.

I agree it's pretty simple/repetetive, but it doesn't strike me as offensive. I don't even really notice it anymore.
