who said anything about an outside environment <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />. true outdoors areas arn't the only way to show the environment of a planet.

I can put forward some 2nd hand PC 'goodies' which I'd give away free if the recipient paid postage.

- Athlon 2200XP
- A7N32 (will double-check this) Asus motherboard
- ThermalTake Volcano 7 CPU fan with fanspeed controller (dusty)
- A GeForce2!!!
- A 230W PSU that came with my Yang Yeong server cube PC case
- An Athlon PSU fan that came with my Athlon X2 3800

and I may have some other 'goodies' like a TNT2 GFX card, a V.92 modem card, maybe a network card. I'll check tonight.

I might also be tempted to enter this contest with a Hive room or Siege room or 'weldable' room (I think these last two would make good categories).
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Come to think of it I have a spare 450W PSU, TNT2, Age old Athlon Thunderbird motherboard, an Intel 2.0-2.6ghz Motherboard and couple of pieces of pants software I might be able to send if postage is paid for too although I need to dig them out and take photographs first. Also just found Serious Sam, Rise of Nations, Hitman 1 and a copy of Football Manager 2006 I could give away.

Hmmm don't want to turn the competition in to an old Doomys get rid of my crap thread or anything but hey, nothing like a booby prize to go along with the pride of your map piece! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I see how this is going...

Build the most beautiful map ever seen in NS......

and win a load of crap <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" /> that you then have to pay postage for <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Great idea. Let me also say that upon completion of the entire project, we will look at the best maps for official inclusion into NS as well. We would also be happy to give you a custom forum title if you'd like ("2007 Map Content Winner"?).

Good luck!
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Does this mean we can complete our maps as we go through each stage? and even if none of my sections win their individual section, the map i end up with could still become an official map if it was considered good enough?

Surely that's an incentive for more than just 4 mappers to join in the competition <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

I may have confused him a little when I wrote him. I meant that all the winners would recieve the Forum Title as well as have the Dev Team take a good eye-over the map as a whole for consideration into the 'official' map releases. If we have 5 Winners, then all 5 should recieve the '2007 Map Contest Winner' Forum Titles (Or 'Map Contest Winner')

As far as I know, anyone can still submit their maps to the Dev Team at any time for consideration, this was an effort to have them look at it, even though there are several designers involved.

Let me iterate that <b><u>this is not an individual map contest</u></b> , but a room-by-room contest. Each Phase of the competition will be used as a piece to construct ONE map, using the rooms submitted. The Winner of each phase, gets their room included into the final finished product.

Mapper A, won Phase 1 - Marine Start
Mapper B, won Phase 2 - Hive 1
Mapper C, won Phase 3 and 4 - etc...

The final completed map will have the MS from Mapper A, A Hive from mapper B, and both rooms from Mapper C.

Each mapper working on a Phase, is ONLY working on that defined piece/phase of the map. However, if you would like to continue to work on you map as a whole (even though you lost a phase), go for it. The Winning Pieces will all be compiled together in one Functioning map, which will be then sent to the Dev Team.

This is a community project contest, not a Mapping contest for an entire map. Although one mapper could conceivably win all phases (hard to believe).

Might have to refine this part of the title thread:
<!--quoteo(post=1585932:date=Dec 8 2006, 07:44 PM:name=ShenTraX)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ShenTraX @ Dec 8 2006, 07:44 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->
Each phase completes a segment of a map. When all segments are complete, I hope to meet/beat the restrictions of mapping guidelines to be submitted as an official (cross fingers) map to be released with NS 3.2 (or later).<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Might have to add "Each Phase completes a portion of a 'final contest map'. Each Winner will have their phase added to the final completed project."

Sounds Great, Sounds like you are right on track.
Sounds Great also. Keep in mind, that outside envireonments, although nice to look at, aren't usually in NS maps (part of gameplay). But if you can work it out, it sounds great.
Sorry to hear you are having some trouble. I didn't want to restrict the guidelines on creation too much, it would take away a lot of creativity. You can, theorectially, have several rooms/hallways. As long as you meet the requirements above, and <u><b>as long as there is fluid alien/marine movent.</b> </u>

The com-chair design, altough unique, may hinder your rating, as It will have to be someone easily accessable . This also depends on surrounding, etc. The door timers also will 'hinder' movement. Can't lock yourself in a room and laugh at the aliens all round. But if you can pull off something realy creative, that doesnt postpone the end of a round (marines lost and the mapping drags it out), then you should be good.
The design is all up to the mapper. I would hate to put any real kind of restraints on the design, e.g. size, depth, etc... But looking at the now-official maps would be a good start.

Here are some of the judging categories:
Detail
Fluid Movement / Ease of access
Architecture
Lighting
Ambience
Meets/Exceeds 'Standards' for NS 'official' mapping guidelines
Effects
etc...

I should post a detailed Tally Table, or at least add it to the origional post, eh?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I have the timers set so that the door can only be used once every so often (the blast door, for example, only once every 5 minutes) and it only stays open for 30 seconds. Mainly it's so that, if you see, say, 3 onos and 2 fades rushing into the base, you close it and try to hold em off the chair <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> Makes sense, as the CC is supposed to be the key structure. I may change it out though, as I came to the realization that the commander is NOT bound to the time restraints 0o' (click the door, it moves)

my understanding was ns map. But in retrospect a co map would be far more likely to work with this. I think an ns map needs alot more planning than can be done with a comp like this.

Maybe, Maybe not. Depending on the quality of work and the phase progression. If we complete enough phases for a NS map, that will work just fine. However, if we dont have enough competitors to complete a NS map, but have enough phases completed to construct a Combat map; then we'll do that.

As Rendy mentioned it a Combat map would bring in more people because of the less long-winded mapping and would quite possibly be easier for you (Shentrax) to piece together and compile <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Dont worry about me. Until otherwise, we're making a NS map. The Contest will still award winners based on the guidlines stated in the first post. MS, needs a resource node, therefore, it'll be a NS Map.

Nope. The Contest rules are still in place.

Look. If we go a few phases, and get some great work, and people stop participating, I'll have no choice to terminate the contest. The objective is to put our heads together, get the community involved for some good'ol'fashon mapping, and to see if we can design a official-worthy map in the process.

Lets focus on Phase 1.

Well if a ship is flying through space for hundreds of years, they would need to grow their own food right, especially considering they could house many thousands of staff, there would be the odd tractor working the agricultural fields, surely? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

that's true. it would be far easier to make a combat map. on the other hand, if we make this a combat map it will require far less mapping. it would end up being 3 sections: MS, Hive, middle sections. of course, this is all up to Shen.

I like a good challenge.

Besides, I should have enough prize money to complete a map, its just a matter of contestant willpower.

Provided the entries are based on how well they will work gameplay-wise, a decent ns_map could be made out of this. Although there could be problems with texture set clashes and reaching the limit with only half a map.

I do think some decent designs could come out of the Hive and MS sections with people paying their full attention to how it will affect the game. Somebody said that the official maps are a good point of reference. This is true, but I'd say they offer both good and bad examples. As sexy as it is in style, Ayumi has a terrible set of Hive rooms that mostly disadvantage Aliens. Pressure and AE35 Hives both have res nodes at the far end of corridors, <i>outside</i> the actual Hive room. At the same time their design, especially Pressure, makes sieging quite hard. Hence there are good points and bad points to be taken from most official maps.

Actualy, ae35's res node is inside the hive room. You're thinking of the other hive (who's name eludes me at this time)

Good point (but the RT in Hamasaki isn't too vulnerable imo). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

But AE35 is still horrible because it has long, low, straight corridors leading out of it that make it perfect for spawn camping. Same with Pressure that has <i>one</i> (hello?) main exit and two vents, so Onoses and bile-bombing Gorges are forced down one path straight into Marine gunfire.

Are we allowed to use existing (unfinished) maps? Or must we start from scratch? Also, custom content is allowed (models, textures, sounds, etc)?
