PS3 HD Woes

<div class="IPBDescription">I really need some help...</div>After laying down a wad of cash for the 60GB PS3, then laying down a wad of cash for a HDTV Set-top box, then some more cash for all the cables which failed me, I still cannot get my HD gaming experience to work.

Here's my situation: I have a Hitachi projection TV that's "HD Compliant" - which means that the TV isn't HD-ready right out of the box. You need a special device that "decodes" the HD signals to display correctly. (Or so I'm told).

So, as I said, I laid down some moolah for a StarChoice Motorola HD reciever. I chose this item mainly because it works with my existing Satellite connection, which saves me a lot of hassle and gives me some nice HD channels, too.

So anyways, I plug that thing into my TV and get it working, which is very nice. However, when I try to plug my system into it, or into the TV, it does not work. At all. Period. I've tried every possible combination with every possible kind of cable, still no luck...

First, I used some component cables for my PS3, and tried that into my TV with no avail. (I also bought a Digital Audio cable that doesn't work). Alright. No biggie. I have a DVI slot in my TV. All I need is an adapter, and everything will work out dandy.

So I run out and get myself a DVI - HDMI adapter, and an HDMI cord for the system. Again I try every possible combination of plugging it into my television and my Box. Still a no-go. So, am I doing something wrong? Does this just not work for me? Do I need a new TV or a new box? Help me. So far I've blown over $800 JUST to try and get my HD gaming experience to work. :/ And although it sounds like it... I am not made of cash!

My HD Box is a StarChoice Motorola DSR505 HD.

Please help me... I have the following PS3 related tools:

-HDMI Cable for PS3
-Component Cable for PS3
-DVI - HDMI Adapter
-Digital Audio Cable

Help me NS Forum goers, you're my only hope...

Does your TV support 720p? as in do you have one of those older series TVs that only supports 1080i and 480i/p. Because if that's the case, then you're out of luck because Ps3 doesn't upscale to 1080i and in fact de-scales picture to 480p. (most Ps3 games only go up to 720p <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />)

    My Television supports modes: 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i.

And that only happens *if* you get the HD working in the first place. :/ What happens at the moment is I plug in the connections and get a black screen on my system.

One thing I don't understand is how your TV is supporting all these resolutions yet won't let you display them without a HD box. That's the first time I heard that. I always thought of the HD Box as an up scaler if the TV cannot perform it.
What is your TV's native resolution? Also, how old is it? Because I've searched the web for a manual or any type of specifications and couldn't find one (Is it that old?)
Have you tried directly plugging in your PS3 to the TV via component cables? I have a feeling that you're having a problem with DVI.

[EDIT] Why are you even bothering with HDMI-DVI, you only need it for 1080p resolution TVs (Component can do 1080p also but that's a different story). Component should give you better quality anyways because of the older TV you got (I know that from the fact that it doesn't come with an HDMI port - just about every TV today has one)

Rofl, just noticed what you wrote. Ummm.... See if you Component Cable has a HDTV to TV (480i) switch. I know X360 comes with one and is really nice. But in the nutshell, trying changing resolutions on your TV and PS3. Maybe they aren't matching up. Start with 480i and go up. But then again, how do you change in on the Ps3 if you can't see it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />. I say sell it on eBay rofl. Worth more.

It says that the HDMI cable supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions.

My TV is only a year old.

    And here's the manual: <a href="http://pgroves.googlepages.com/46W500.pdf" target="_blank">http://pgroves.googlepages.com/46W500.pdf</a> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

And there's no switch that I know of on the PS3 component cable. If there was one, whereabouts would I look?

Well lets start with a fact: PS3 doesn't come with a component cable, not even HDMI. Just a lousy composite cable for Standard Definition. I hope you didn't get those two confused and didn't used a composite cable instead of a component cable.

Component Cable - 5 Cables (3 for RGB and 2 for Stereo Audio)
Composite Cable - 3 Cables (1 Video and 2 for Stereo Audio)

I know HDMI supports all resolutions, but so does the component (even 1080p if allowed). On older TVs component looks better because of the decoders and up scalers in them. They are more suited for analog than digital. (especially in the ones that don't even have HDMI....)

Makes sure, you have a High Bandwidth Component Cable and not one of those older ones that goes up to like 540p (which definitely doesn't support 1080p and maybe 1080i/720p, need to do some research on that).

The switch made for the X360 on the component cable is customized and is only made for X360s, so I doubt Ps3 has something like that since it doesn't even come with HD cables of any kind.

Tell me how your HD Satellite TV is connected to the TV through the HD Box (assuming its the same thing as a Set-Top-Bx the manual is talking about). Do you use component or DVI? Also tell me what resolution does your HD Satellite TV use.

Problem solved. I didn't realise you had to hold the PS3's power button down for ten seconds for it to auto-detect the new input.

Honestly how could you NOT know that you have to hold the power button for ten seconds just to make it realize you've plugged it in? I mean jeez you have to do that for just about every other piece of consumer electronics.

    Right?

#1 Get rid of that HDMI cable it is worthless at the moment.

#2 That TV does support 1080i-480i

To be honest I wouldn't even bother hooking up a PS3. To anything. I mean seriously, you can play Resistance, and that's it. Maybe once they get Lair and Metal Gear Solid and uh... some other games, it'll be worth waiting until it costs less than a zillion dollars. Until then, DirectX10 cards are coming out soon.

He was joking, and besides a topic about either the PS3 or the Xbox360 will have some sort of <X console> is better than <X console>. The Wii topic fortunately didn't have that.

Honestly, there is no need to bash other consoles, or is there any reason to bash those who bash consoles because he/she bashed a console you didn't want bashed.

The point is, there isn't a point to bash or defend&flame&bash other consoles. I mean, I can see people flaming or bashing each other about things/questions like "Who killed Mr. Burns?" or "Warcraft sucks".

We're not part of any of the console's company, so we are not losing or gaining any money, the sales of each console is good enough for upgrades/sequels/etc and it's not a sega saturn where they barely had much sales and was a miracle for it the company to even release dreamcast which some are still debating if it was best to have released the console or not.

I know you're being sarcastic and trying to be funny, but for real, the power brick is not the console. The power brick might have over heated before but fortunately doesn't happen anymore since they fixed them. You people need to understand that people who let's say buy a X360 really don't want to hear stuff like that. It's not really fanboy stuff, but more of an insult to people who bought it. In someways people indirectly say "wow, what a retard, you bought a console that lights on fire" *it's insulting* Stuff like that is so immature....

    Sony killed my father :(

...on a more serious note, I don't have anything against the PS3 personally but Sony's rather arrogant statements and swagger as of late (including statements along the lines of "the next gen doesn't start until <b>we</b> say it does" and more irritatingly, "Europe is used to waiting long after everyone else. We could release it in a years time and they'd still snap it up".)

I also take issue with the fact they're trying to use a console game to push a new format. I'm trying to play games here and they're all talking about "it's not a console you're buying, it's potential!".

If and when any games I actually want come out on the PS3 exclusively I'll probably consider buying one when (and again, if) the price hits a sane level (for me that's under £200... less than $300 roughly).
Before then I'll probably have a 360 to go with my Wii :p
