FPS stuttering

<div class="IPBDescription">what to do?</div>First off,
my pc spec:
AMD 2400+ Athlon
GeF6600 GT nuff said
1gig ram

I've already turned vert_sync off (with nvidia tool on desktop) and set max fps on 100.
I've also turned several things off that would cause such fps drop.

Thing is that when I run around, not matter skulk or rine lately, my fps drops and stutters as soon as one or more ppl show up on my screen.

In the heat of a battle, ppl just need to run around me and I'm already shooting or bite into empty spots and just die.

Any ideas on what to do today?
The FAQ is a bit old, like around 2003 or something and none of info has really helped <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Are you using OpenGL rendering mode? If not, switch to that and see if there's any improvement.

I've been having the same issue I ran clean up and defrag and that seems to have fixed it.

The stuttering you get may be due to recent 'fixes' in the HL engine.

    1) Try running a demo in-game while playing (thats one fix published on steam forums)

    2) Try updating to the latest Nvidia drivers from <a href="http://www.guru3d.com" target="_blank">Guru 3D</a>

    3) De-fragging could also help as suggest earlier

    4) Check your running at 8x AGP (or for PCI-E whatever the highest setting is, not a clue about PCI-E cards)

    5) Check your settings. Make sure your not running with for example 16x AA/AS if your card can't handle the level of detail.

<a href="http://www.omegadrivers.net/index.php" target="_blank">http://www.omegadrivers.net/index.php</a> are also an option instead of using the official drivers...

I'm a bit afraid of every updating my graphic drivers again.

My other MoBo and graphic card suffered bigtime under the so-called BSOD "nv_disp.dll" bomb -_-

    So far, I switched to a different board and I'm using nvidia's 66.XX . Maybe getting a higher driver migh work but really dude - I don't ever ever want to see that BSOD again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Is this also found in the nvidia desktop setting tool?

    Btw, I've had also fps stuttering due to the "snowfall" effect of Steam's advertisement that I still had open in the background <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

This is the same problem I'm having. It's only in NS though, every other HL1 mod runs just fine.

I stopped playing completely for a while because of the crappy fps drops. Then I went to go play recently, and the problem still exists but now shows different symptoms. When I join a game, my fps goes crazy for about 5 minutes. Then after that time, steam crashes, but NS continues to run, and suddenly all my problems are fixed. But once I go to quit the game my computer crashes...lol

    This is getting annoying.

So it must be a steam platform problem? Associated with the ns client dll?

For the initial poster, make sure that your graphics card is not overheating, i.e. the GPU's fan should be working (if it has one), your case should be cooled as well. Could be your CPU too though, since it is a Sempron 2400+, which is about 1.67GHz and can be compared to Intel's Celeron line of processors.

The problem seems to be with processing, your RAM seems to be okay although I don't know what kind. I know that Half-Life uses a lot more of the CPU than other similar games.

Well its still playable, maybe I overdid it with saying "stuttering"

Its just that rines would do their usual strafe movement left and right and I get missing frames and then hear how l33t they are at killing skulks if its just me who can't counter because my fps is dancing
    *deepbreath*

Its pure luck when I bite them at very close range too. It seems as when I have alien-flashlight on, I see through their model when I'm very close (aside to the fps skipping). When I turn off alien-flashlight, I get a normal flow, but the natural light on the marine makes them really CAMOFLAUGE (sp) if they are standing nearby or far away.
I'm as blind as hell without the flashlight ^^

Just a bit of an update on my problem.
Yet its a problem why I can't be effective with Fade either :/

If it isn't as bad as you say it is, then it's likely just your CPU. Get an upgrade.
