3ds max

How much harder is 3ds max than ms3d. Ive been using ms3d for years too fearful to move to 3ds max (which I blew a crap load of money on a while ago, never used it, and now spent another 700 bucks on the upgrade) because it will eb a lot difficult to relearn everything. Those who use it, how hard is it to get the hang of the program after using ms3d for mad long?

I'd say it's about as hard as moving from Paint Shop Pro to Photoshop. You know what you want to do, you just don't know the names of the tools, or where the tool options are, etc. I don't know how long it'll take you to switch over, but I do know the switch has to be wholesale. You can't "dual boot" as it were. You'll have to delete MS3D from your computer entirely, and resign yourself to banging your head against a wall for about a month until you get used to the new program.

I used to use it, but prefer XSI now. Better forget milkshape totally, most high end 3d packages will have a plethora of tools amd deformers for shaping your model, whereas milkshape is just creating vertexes and then joining faces i believe?

Theres stacks of tutorials and help that come with the program. If its mainly modeling your interested in, then you should have bought something cheaper i.e. Silo. But seeing as you already got it, then look at places like 3dbuzz.com were they have some free vtms, that explain and GUI and layout and such.

Id say milkshapes more of a compile and converting tool, than a modeler.

Thats the exact way I was thinking, I was thinking from when I moved to Paintshop Pro to Photoshop.

There is a free alternative that offers almost the same power as 3d max.

    GMAX from Discreet Logic.

Be sure to also download the tuturials and help files as they are they are seperate downloads.

GMAX is a free scaled down version of 3d max 4.1

Max is obviously a little harder to learn than MS3D but once you can use it, it is easily a hundred times as powerful and versatile.

Gmax is still better then most free 3d software if not all of them. Not everyone has money to buy 3d max. I've been a GMAX forum moderator for close to 5 years and after 3000 posts at my account, I still say it is worth to try. Besides, it gives you the basic 3d max knowledge and trainging until you have the money for it. You still can do lots of stuffs with it. THe only thing I am not happy with it is the lack of export/import plugins but there are workarounds.

NOw that this is said, lets not start a debate on it. It would be a waste of time for whomever posted the original thread.

You're totally right, a lot of people don't have the money to go out and buy copies of 3DS Max ... which is why you are connected to the INTERNET people, do the math ....

I bought 3ds, but I didnt really have the money to spend it on the upgrade I bought (I still have 3ds 6 somewhere round my pile of crap in my office). I returned the upgrade for 9, and 6 is really really lagy on my crap gfx card if I remember, but so is gmax... Maybe its time for me to upgrade the crap gfx card I got, thanks for all the help people.

I haven't used 9 yet, but the only difference between 6 and 8 is the pelt mappingtool, and the changed UVW unwrap tools, which to be honest I don't think are as good as the max7 ones.

If you don't do characters, imo there isn't much point using anything above 6.

Pelt mapping is REALLY useful for organic models.

My version of 3dsmax is semi-legit. It's actually a friends version, so I won't register it for fear of invalidating his license. Can I still run these tutorials? It's also an old version- what is the newest version and is it worth it?

It's not harder as such, but it is far more complex and sophisticated.

The good news is that if your ambitions only extend to modelling and skinning then you''d only need to learn about 10% of the program, same applies to any of the high end programs.

Once you've seen some of the modelling tools and options available in the more sophisticated programs you won't want to go back to MS3D other than maybe for compiling or file conversions, trust me on this. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Creating faces vertex by vertex? No thank you, my desktop calendar says it's 2006..

Ive been expereimenting in it, and I fidn it a lot easier to do very complex geometry, but the poly count racks up quick, but luckly I have been practicing a lot of poly saving techs and using different tools to merge polies together. Thansk for all the help people.
