Although honestly, I suspect most people who bring up things like that to justify their votes had already planned on voting that way ahead of time, and are just using these incidents for cover for their real opinions. But theres no way to prove that.
I was wondering what was racist about that ad. I don't like how the republicans have done things at all, but I want to at least be honest... I didn't see anything racial really in that ad. There's a white woman flirting with a black man... so what? How is that racist? I dunno, is there something that I'm missing?

Its my understanding that the white woman everyone complained about, only gave her voice to the ad, not her picture. People assumed she was a white woman flirting with a black man, but that was just a guess. For those who havent heard, Harold Ford's campaign came down with righteous indignation against an ad run by their opponents, which blasted Harold's stances on about 10 different important issues, and then ended with a woman whispering "Harold, call me", right after the party-affiliation-disclaimer. Harold's campaign ignored the issues and attacked the ad as racist for implying he might be dating a white woman, when hes black. Not that that line of thought had ever crossed the minds of the ads creators, since they were using a latino actress. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Can you reference a reputable source that says it was a hispanic actress? I haven't once heard that claimed until you said it. I tried to look that up and all I found was some forum where some guy says Rush Limbaugh claimed it was a hispanic actress. Are you saying they took a hispanic actress and dubbed a white woman's voice over hers? I'm not speaking to the claimed racism of the ad, but I did see it and she looked white to me. Everything I've read about the subject refers to her as a white woman.

It shows the woman in the ad... I dunno what you're talking about. scooterblue posted a picture of the girl, she looks pretty white to me.

I could be wrong, I didn't follow the race very closely, but I'm almost positive Harold Ford's campaign didn't claim that the ad was racist, just misrepresented his stances. I'm pretty sure it was just the media claiming it was racist. Can you link me to somewhere Harold Ford claimed it was racist? Again, I've only seen like one interview but in that one he said specifically he didn't think it was racist.

In my defense, it didn't seem like a real important issue for me to follow, since I don't vote in that district anyway. Plus the election was over before I started talking about it. I usually pay much closer attention to issues before trying to argue about them.

The great thing about the ad is you can't definitively <b>prove</b> it was intentionally trying to be racist by having the hand of a black man over a white woman's mouth, but I have no doubt they were courting the racist vote.
There was a radio ad against Ford that had tribal drum beats in the background; nope, not trying to associate Ford with primitive, savage Africans.
