Turn Off Ambient Sound?

NateDieselNateDiesel Join Date: 2004-07-22 Member: 30036Members
The ambient sound is really loud... stopsound and mp3 volume at 0 doesn't work. It just starts up again. How can I turn it off?

You know, loud environment noise. A bit hard to describe... maybe sounds like big pieces of metal being turned.

Happens on other maps too. All the other sound is fine except I walk into an area and BAM I'm almost deafened. Haha. <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You could replace the music files with blank ones.

Or you could just delete them, or if you want to hear them, put them in a randomized Winamp playlist (non-repeating).

They are part of the game, no need to remove them.
That's like saying that you should have fullbright on all maps; otherwise, you can't see some skulks hiding. Right?
The sounds were <i>made</i> to hinder your ability you hear. Don't remove them.

remove or move the ns\sound\ambience folder, then set cl_allowdownload 0 in your config or userconfig.

    <a href="http://www.lol.com/blankambiencesounds.rar" target="_blank">Blank ambience sounds</a>.

Backup your files etc. Works with mp_consistency.

there are a lot of idiots that don't know how to do this correctly, if you just MOVE the folder out of there or something, the console should spam, CANNOT READ blah blah blah. I checked it on a nix and windows computer, if you don't do it correctly you'll get a overflow.

okay, im having the same problem as the poster, but i'm thinking i can explain it better.

It is NOT cl_musicenabled, and I don't have a problem with the ambient sounds NORMALLY, but all of a sudden the ambient sounds are -no joke- 10x louder than normal. In fact if I turn my volume in NS to 0.01 so I can't even hear bites etc, I can STILL HEAR THE AMBIENT SOUNDS AT A RELATIVELY LOUD VOLUME.

I am [upset] that I have to use that blank ambient sound pack, but NS has suddenly become UNPLAYABLE. Once again, I've been playin this game for many years, and never before have I had this problem. Any help would be very appreciated.

stopsound, cl_musicenabled, bgmvolume all do exactly nothing to help the problem.

    -aes0p

edit: okay, i feel like a fool. Try turning down the mp3 volume in audio settings in-game. Worked 4 me.

edit again: no it didn't. still a problem.

    Amen aes0p_r0ck,

I have the same problem, and have had it for over a year.

If you want to know what we're talking about, type "volume 0.01" in console and "cl_musicenabled 0", and then play a normal game.

You'll notice that all "normal" sounds are very, very low and there is no music, but all "ambient" sounds play at FULL VOLUME. They *should* be playing at a low volume along with the normal sounds.

This is a BUG clear and simple and should probably be posted in the bug report forum.

The reason this bug troubles me, is because it makes it hard to manage the sound between NS and other applications. For example, I usually run music or play a radio show in the background while I play NS. Therefore I need to lower NS's volume... Well all sounds *except* ambient sounds are affected by the volume change... so the sounds of pipes creaking is basically drowning out all other NS sounds, my custom music... everything. I while back I realized you could replace the ambient sounds with zero-length wavs and have been doing so since. This is not about cheating so much as regaining control over my application's volume. This issue is about the same as the gamma issue (the game is trying to force something, but for some people it makes the game unplayable... and when they find a way around it they're called hackers).
