Best Football Halftime..Ever

I just had to share this.

So, just got back from what has to be the best football (American football, yea I know...wasn't there for the game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />) halftime show. EVER. (Lay off, I'm a musician, haven't you figured that out with my comic yet?)

Well, it was the University of Houston Cougars versus the Grambling State Tigers. Half time comes up, and, since they are the visitors, the GSU Band goes up to play. If you have never seen the GSU Band play, check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3Zii6t7FiI" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZNgLyV7rAo" target="_blank">here</a>. They arn't quality sound, like say Chicago Symph and whatnot, but its the energy they put into their performance. It was GREAT.

Well, after they do their thing, the UH band comes on the field in their "pre-game" block (lines of bandmembers on the goal, 5, 10, 15, and 20 lines, with drumline centered on the 10). You here the 3 whisles from the band director, David Bertman (drum corps enthustiasts will recognize the name, since he is the brass caption head for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps), the drups tap off three times, and the band starts marching down the field to... Sousa's Washington Post? The UH band, a contemporary marching band (they do cool looking line formations, involving curves and such) began marching down the field military style (block of band, with various manuvers involving inverting the box, in a not too showy way, i.e. Texas Aggies), so this was very different than what is the norm. So different, the UH fans (who do enjoy the marching band) began booing the UH band. David Bertman is shown on the screen with a huge smile when all of a sudden, the band is overpowered by the loudspeakers, which began playing some Chamillionaire song. The band does a comical WTH, both vocal and visual, then bust out in GSU Band-style dancing. The croud, including GSU fans and their band, goes wild. After playing some songs and dancing while playing, ala Grambling, the GSU Band joins them on field for dancing and a closing number, Aretha Franklin's R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

That, my friends, was the biggest show of energy and talent, ever, thus making it the Best Football Halftime, EVER.

    On a semirelated note:
The Cavaliers are the BEST I've heard out of the Drum and Bugle Corps. They're..fantastic. Close behind would have to be Phantom Regime, and a few others after, which I can't remember at the moment. Our cousin did two years with the Crossmen, then a past year with The Cavaliers playing snare. Going to a few DCI competitions, I can honestly say I don't want to hear high school or even college performances after those guys. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

That sounded like a fantastic show though, would've wanted to see that.

lol, yea, no breasts this time. But, I hope to find a recording to put online.

Artica, what year did he march?

If I was to do any DCI Drum Corps, it would probably be Cavies or Scouts. Too bad I don't have the time to do it. =/

If my memory serves me semicorrect, it was Cavaliers '05, and Crossmen the previous two years. I can't remember exactly, but it was within the 02-06 timeframe. Drumline FTW.

Heh, he marched with some of my friends all of those years. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> I take it last year was his age out?

It was either that, or he decided he needed to get other things taken care of. He's graduating from TCU this year; also a music major, obviously. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Seach 'Cal Band' on YouTube. I'm in it, and we do better half-time shows in terms of marching and variety. Our half-time 2004 bowl game show also featured "Crazy", but it was compiled with other music.

    Go Bears!

Very nice precision with the Cal Band. Watched the Pre-Game fron 9-9-06 game, very impressed. Also watching the Cal/BYU Las Vegas Bowl PreGame (Running Sousas!) and the half time show. Dig the sound, too!

I wish I had a recording of my last show with the UH band, the Birdland show. =/ That was a fun one.

SCV is awesomely top notch as well; They were one of the others that I loved. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Yea, SCV is good.

I found the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FTXxT7ZCGk" target="_blank">UH part to the end of the halftime</a>. Can't tell if the audio is good, cause I'm in a library computer room, and theres no speakers. Camera is a little shaky, too. Looked better from the front side.

Noisey, real noisey the video was. They looked like a bunch of coneheads, wearing those KKK-like hats.
