That was a let-down. That old trailer built up my expectations, but I can't stand the gameplay in FEAR. It's like The Specialists, only your enemies have a lot more armor and you can't do stunts... and without stunts bullet-time is boring as hell.

Also, my friend and I agree the "scary" parts are not so much scary as they are annoying... Or maybe I was concentrating too hard on killing the little girl rather than being scared of her. The only way they can scare me is if she does damage, as in HP damage. Why fear something that can't hurt you? Scripted in-game cinematics aren't very painful (unless the voice acting sucks).

In any case, yea, it's probably going to be a lot scarier than Doom 3 ( so was HL1), but System Shock 2 will keep the crown when I think of horrifying games. It had better gameplay and almost certainly a better story. Maybe the AI will redeem this game.

SPOILERS (as if you should care... it's an 8-minute demo)
So, what we have so far for the backstory is;

Fetter is a cannibal that has recently been freed from captivity by his supersoldiers and apparently the little ghost. He was engineered as a telepath so that he could command a battalion of also engineered supersoldiers made by the US government. The dying guy at the end of the demo says that Fetter can't be allowed to gain access to Alma (the little ghost, I think), and this isn't explained at all. However, since she's been seen all over the place - and you see Fetter walking around as a "ghost," we can assume she's also a telepath/psychic that exists in the physical world who is trying to freak out but not kill the guy you play as for reasons unknown. The guy you play as might be one of Fetter's soldiers, since he contacts you directly and asks "What's the first thing you remember?" Then you learn that "you" were stolen at birth by someone (probably the government). So, in a nutshell, you're a soldier of Fetter's that has somehow broken free of his control and the government/FEAR team wants you to prevent Fetter from reaching Alma, the little girl you're all so afriad of.

Even if this demo kind of sucked, I am definitely buying this game. It ran perfectly maxed out on my machine, and even though I prefer sci-fi horror, the story's got me interested, if only because it's a somewhat original concept to make the very character you play as strange and untrustworthy in a first-person game. Also, the AI is pretty good - though the AI in HL1 still outclasses that of many new games for some reason, this isn't one of them.

Yeah, I just quit the game after the ladder part, I'll play it later.

It's unusual how little girls are scarier than monsters, they just are.

Depends on the monster. FEAR really freaked me out when I watched the E3 demo in low-res - I couldn't tell what the little girl was, it was just a pitch black figure with a squeal. When I saw that it was what it was, it was a relief.

Blame "The Ring" and the US film conversions made after it.
From the sound of that alone,I will download this game. Not played a good scary FPS since....Doom.

Serious. I always found them intimidating, in real life.

Now I just have a reason to run away.

wow, just played through it, it was intense. sure it was short but still, one of the best experiences since HL2 and BF2. the AI in this game is very impressive like Farcry's. i especially love how the soldiers use their environment ALL the time. they even jump out windows and crawl under obstacles. yes, i shot a shelf and blocked off a passage and i saw a soldier crawl under it to get a better shot at me. very good game and i will definitely be getting this.

that ladder...saw the girl and i jumped, and after i reach the ground i see that guy walking towards me and i openned fire and jumped up as well. holy ****.

The ladder didn´t really got me, it was more like a simple huh? and then i shot the guy down there ^^.
THe really scary part comes afterwards ^^

And in the beginning when you find the frist corpse, it was a scary aswell.

Afterall i have to say i was way to frightened by the demo before i played it, i just snuck around everywhere, looking behind me every 5 secs (Thanks D3), but nothing.
This seems to be more like subtle horror, made in a very good FPS.
I like it very much.

But ragdolls seemed a little of, they were twitching minutes after you shot them.

Dammit, now I'm expecting something else to get me after the ladder part. I'd rather have had it unsuspected. Now I'm constantly looking around. Oh god. It takes me like 5 minutes to go into a room now.

They're cinematics. What you should be afraid of is that dude in the Heavy Armor at the beginning. He's insanely hard if you don't pop out, run, and repeat.
• BeefybongBeefybong Join Date: 2003-10-05 Member: 21453Members
Oh cinematics, thank god, and yeah that heavy soldier was insane. It took a while to take him out.
• OmegamanOmegaman Join Date: 2004-01-11 Member: 25239Members
HOORAY! I'm not the only one that was impressed!

Probably the one of the neater thing I noticed during fire fights is that if you spray your bullets all over the walls, dust starts to eventually build up in the air. Then, if you fire your shotgun into the dust, the dust turns into a cool swirling vortex. Oh, and aren't those soldiers pretty tough? I mean, they still go down, but I found they go down harder than most FPS regular grunts usually do. And then you run into guys like that supersoldier, which do great jobs as sheilds. They practically use up your whole clip of assault rife ammo!

And finally, to the guy who said it's like the Specialists: Only in multiplayer. In single player, I bet you could go through the whole game without using SloMo (except, of course, unless it's scripted to go into slomo).

Hmm 1024*768*32bits @ everything on maximum runs pretty smooth most of the time on my 850XT, AMD 64bit 3800+. Only some areas will slow down the fps to a crawl...

Pretty heavy game this one...

Love the scare effects, and the way the soldiers move arround trying to outflank you or just get the hell out of my crosshair.

Spoiler alert so don't read if ya want the same scare I got ^^

The scare effects are still pretty predictable though, but from the few in this demo. I'd have to say the ladder was the best. The girl at the top was just a "huh" effect and made me go back up to try and shoot her (yeh I don't like kids laughing at me)... Then I went down the ladder thinking "pfft stupid kid". And then the part at the bottom scared the bejeebus out of me cause it was so freaking unpredictable, made me lose a good amount of bullets... Still **** off at the kid at this point, she tricked me thinking it was all clear

As soon as you get the ladder part over with it's all good... snicker

Ditto about the boss bit, I wanted to mess him up.

Yeah the ladder thing scared the crap out of me too, guy at the bottom got some buckshot up his face the sec I saw him lol.
I also liked how the soldiers could take a punch, not 3-4 bullets and they go down. They get shot, get pushed back by the impact and the rest tries to save them by standing in front of him/giving cover fire/etc.
About the heavy: piece of cake (on normal difficulty): 2 nades, slow mo, assault rifle zoom, aim for head, hold down left mouse button until you hear em yell "Oh **** he took out the heavy!".
And about the boss, I ran to the left and got 2 shotty shots in, saw em both bouncing off his plates, I was like "WTH?! DIEEEE"...bah...then it ended

So... Scared... Must... Buy...

Wow, I... This...

Okay... Doom 3 has creepy moments, and the HL2 fast zombies make you nervous, BUT THIS GAME IS flipping CREEPY. First game I've ever actually been scared while playing... So... Creepy... I didn't even want to walk down the freaking corridor after I went through that one side... And... Wow...

AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I cursed out loud while playing.

It's not based on the Ring at all. The inspiration for the girl was drawn from Kôrei / Seance, which Lith have said numerous times in several interviews.
