F.e.a.r. Sp Demo Out Friday

<div class="IPBDescription">Mmm...</div> Okay. So the betas had the worst God awful performance in existence.

Maybe the SP will be better(<span style='color:red'>PLEASE GOD LET THIS BE TRUE</span>). But either way, it comes out tomorrow. I know for one its at least coming out on Fileplanet, but I think its a universal demo release. Glee!

What are your hopes for this, and once you have it, what do you think of it?

Any hope I had for this game went out the window with the beta. SP would have to be practically a different game for me to play.

Considering the beta was a tacked-on multiplayer <i>whim</i>, and the singleplayer holds much promise, 'different game' doesn't really seem a stretch of the imagination.

Will hear for comments first. Then maybe try it later as to also stress test my machine.

If the weapons are the same as those in the MP beta - and I'm pretty sure they will be - I highly doubt that I'll like it. Everything about the weapons was annoying and lame. Crappy models, crappy skins, slow fire rates, crappy accuracy, annoying particle effects, and absurdly stupid "bubble" effects from the explosions. The whole experience is cheapened by the terrible armory.

The engine really didn't bowl me over with amazement, either. Like Doom 3, everything is fairly low-res but has high-res normal mapping; unlike Doom 3, the textures look like toddler feces, and it crawls on my X800XTPE.

I'll still play it because the E3 movie was so good, but I probably won't even finish it.

Isn't this the game with creepy girl walking around and stuff? What I've seen looks good but since my "The Ring" fiasco, any horror of any genre involving spooky little girls is strictly out of bounds if I want to stay sane.

That's what people told me about Far Cry. I'm still shooting for epic disappointment.

I saw the video of the first level (which is what I assume the demo is of) on Fileshack. Honestly, I'm quite disappointed. It looks like they went from something really special (that they showed off 2 years ago) to just Generic FPS Game, and then added bullet time and tried acted like it was such an original and never-before-used-especially-in-a-game-where-you-shoot-people feature.

    Hopefully it'll be good though.

I suppose it's not the cleverness of the AI that impressed me as much as the dynamicness of them.

If you rush their cover, they turn around and starting sprinting away while wildly shooting their gun behind them. If you get a burst of fire into their chest, they grab their chest with one hand while lurching towards the nearest cover. And while they do go down easily enough, they come in numbers, and if they have an armored unit (ultra-tough mechsuit-like soldiers) with them, they'll take cover behind it. They crawl, they jump, they roll, and their dialogue is a bit more related to the situation than just yelling out random barks of "I'll get you!" and "Argh!"

HL1's soldiers were heavily scripted, i dont find them too impressive now, but it was good then, they dont even move while shooting.

    I win. So much.

One thing I seem to recall about the video I saw of F.E.A.R was that the bullet-timey-flying-kick thing got boring after the third time I saw it, and it was way overused by the person playing it.
  • OmegamanOmegaman Join Date: 2004-01-11 Member: 25239Members
Yeah, I hardly ever used it myself, but there are times when you will actually need it to survive. But I was watching the other people play, and they were just stupid retards, running into the middle of the room, guns blazing, thinking the slow motion would make them untouchable.

If anything, the slow-mo is there so you can get a good look at the eye candy. It's pretty neat watching the dust spiral when you fire a shotgun round.

Fine. Clearly you are invincible with the awesome power of CWAG at your side, but I shall attempt to prove you wrong anyway.

When did the half-life marines ever run away?

When did the half-life marines ever use cover?

When did the half-life marines ever "lurch"?

When did the half-life marines ever crawl?

When did the half-life marines ever jump?

I can't say that i've played F.E.A.R single player, but unless the AI's in F.E.A.R have a habit of dropping grenades at their feet and killing themselves (ala the HL marines), I can pretty safely say they're going to be a whole lot smarter.

I can remember marines taking a hit then running off, ducking behind cover then throwing grenades at me, trying to get around behind me etc... And I'm fairly sure the black-ops guys/gals roll out from behind cover too.

The black ops did not roll as far as I can remember. The female black ops/assasins/whatever you want to call them would somersault if you came too close to them though.

The HL marines sometimes hid, but they never actually used cover as such. I.e, they might take a bit of damage and hide behind something, but they'd never pop in and out of cover, or shoot around corners (ala every shooter since Call of Duty).

Their AI is seven years old. You might as well try to argue that Pacman's AI was superior.

Half-life marines run away in multiple places, from the missle command part of the game, and leading up to it on the tram section.

They use cover a few times in the tram section when a grenade is thrown at them, they hide behind something.

If by lurch you mean kick you then yes they do that too.

They dont jump, crawl, or roll however.

Excuse me, Half-Life marines couldn't run and shoot at the same time. Any semblance of tactics that your brain is attributing to them was clever scripting. If you want a preview of the F.E.A.R AI, check out NOLF 2. Then imagine that except better.

Heavily scripted maybe, but even on custom maps that I made myself, they still did EVERY SINGLE THING Nil IQ said earlier. Half-Life's easily did those things, and I remember it vividly.

(Note that all of this is from the actual game)My strongest memory of it was when I went into one of the areas from a catwalk, and I peak over for a second, and suddenly a grenade was in my lap- I run off to the left down the catwalk(also went to the right, but it just went to the same place but it took longer), and was met by a soldier right there, shooting into my chest. I died, and reloaded.

The second time, I didn't peak, but just ran down there. I managed to make it to ground floor, and had takena soldier(luckily) on the way down, but suddenly, I got hit from the front, and right as I began shooting at that one, he turned and stepped into cover(no sidestepping?), and at that moment EXACTLY, another soldier came out from my now-right-used-to-be-front and shot me down. I reloaded.

This time I just jumped clear off the top floor, shooting one soldier on the way down, but then I found myself wondering where the other two were. They definately weren't at their spawn points that I thought they had- and suddenly, I'm getting shot in my back, then right after that, right from the left.

I was amazed. They had taken cover, and more importantly, worked together to kick my ****, the entire time. It took me 7 retries to get through that area(finally ending in killing all of them, taking the elevator there, then once out of there, absolutely running to the bunker).

Saying Half-Life's AI was crap is ridiculous. Scripted maybe yes, but they still did pretty random stuff to me, that surprised me. Maybe you guys got jipped, but I've gotten this stuff every year I've had the game(since early 99).

It doesnt matter if it was scripted or not, The Hl1 Grunt A.I was more intelligent than the Combine. At least the grunts ran away for cover when they got hurt..

uh... having actually messed about in the AI code and seen it (I made fun changes to the gonarch once but nevermind :p), I can safely say that the HL AI takes cover and hides without scripting. However they DO need nodes to navigate the terrain and use it properly.
