It was a space fighter, but IIRC it was the first fully 3d game... I could be wrong though.

Yeah.

FYI: Descent was my first favorite game. And the first one I gave everlasting loyalty to. I still think it is one of the best games ever. It was my #1 until I met HL in an afterschool LAN. After which I created a gamming club at me highschool but was eventually closed down because this was a Catholic highschool and things like paintball and violent videogames were works of satan or something like that... Not to mention some members *cough cough* couldn't play without yelling and screaming out explicatives... *rolleyes*

But yeah, Descent rocked. The original also had great music (lvl 11, 12, 13, and 14 are best) and was capable of giving you an adrenaline rush and startling you (one of the things I consider to be an inicator of good game).

They so needed the doom body armor. The original, of course.

Marathon came out a ways before Descent and is as far as I know, it's the first first person shooter as we know them (ie. guy running around with his feet on the ground shooting things with a gun that you can see, not in a ship or a hovercraft or anything) to let you control your view with a mouse. However, there were a few games before it that let you look up/down with a keyboard command.

I don't know if you can really count Descent as part of the progression of first person shooters. I mean, sure, it predates Terminator: Future Shock, which predates Quake, which is widely known as the first 3d fps, but if we're going to count Descent, what about all those other space shooters that came out long before it? Elite was 3d. Are we going to pretend that Elite never happened?

Isn't too bad, but it isn't too good either.

But it's weird how the website mentions the plot. In trailer it's pretty off, but the website's description fits in with D3. Someone should poke them for inconsistencies.

...I hope they don't throw in that extra 'zing!' they do with all game movies.
• RobRob Unknown Enemy Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 25Members, NS1 Playtester
Well since the movie isn't titled "Doom III," I think it's fine that they use the original Doom plot. They WERE derelict space marines, stationed on Mars, teleported on one of the moons after some garbled transmissions.

After that's it's pretty much wide open. Though I have to say, it would have been much more stylish a movie to having a more subdued character do a one man show. Start in the dark with only a pistol, and work his way to the end. That hasn't been done quite as often. No corny one liners or anything, cold steel faced, ya know. I think it could be done.

Oooo These guys have the producer from Constantine.
• MavericMaveric Join Date: 2002-08-07 Member: 1101Members
The original DooM plot was that you assualted a CO because you didn't like his order, got sent to a mars base, and then get catapulted into a situation where you have to fight demonic beings from another time and space because of some sort of teleportation test that's going on between Mars and it's moons...

Right?
• RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
Pretty much. I still have the original Doom here and I could fire it up to check.

The original game itself had no story. The story was in the manual. Maveric has it, but the mars base was dead; apparently the marine's time was spent doing drugs and watching restricted movies. o_O

They should of done the story based off doom1, your the last marine out the ship after you hear your squad get ripped apart over the radio and you only have a pistol. And what better character to play this part than:

haha, hey it would work, if they cut out the comedy stuff and throw a doom guy outfit on him. Hes even got the chainsaw AND shotgun!

Completely untrue.

There was a screen of story at the end of each episode.

Yeah its not much, but it isn't "no story".

We have a misunderstanding, I didn't say 'Goldeneye' was the first FPS invented. I said some of you people remind me of those kids that thought it was, and all they seem to care about is graphics. What happened to the good old days when game play was better than graphics....sigh.

Well, here is the Doom Comic if anyone wants to read it. Actually hilarious, it's pretty obscene.

They should use the original Doom story, you hear screams inside the building, then you enter alone with just a pistol...by yourself. Doom I took place on The Mars Moons, then onto Hell itself. Doom II was hell on Earth...
