"I can't say that I'm a superpro," he said, working the controller like an extension of his body. "I can be beat."

Those bold enough to challenge him weren't so lucky. One by one, while playing "Soul Caliber 2," their video characters were decapitated, eviscerated and gutted without mercy by Mellen's on-screen alter ego.

"I'm getting bored," Mellen said in jest as he won game after game.

Blind since birth when his optic nerve didn't connect because of Leber's disease, Mellen honed his video game skills over the years through patient and not-so-patient playing, memorizing key joystick operations and moves in certain games, asking lots of questions and paying particular attention to audio cues. He worked his way up from games such as "Space Invaders" and "Asteroid," onto the modern combat games.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Heh. My nan used to be able to beat me at Mortal Kombat (in an arcade of all places) 'cos she just kept hammering the punch button and I didn't know how to do any special moves at that time. I got pwn0rized.

He stands like a statue, becomes part of the machine, feeling all the bumpers, always playing clean. He plays by intuition, the digit counters fall. That deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball.

Mortal Kombat does suck. My guess is he can only play games in a 2D plain, Space Invaders and Fighting Games. Maybe he could do FPS, but put his sound to "Mono" and he's boned as if he were in jail.

This kid's pretty bad-****. I would ask if he had AIM or something of the such, quite the interesting chat I'd think, but then again, that'd be a retarded question.

Being blind is actually a benefit in fighting games like Soul Calibur. It takes away the element of perceived strategy and lets you get right to the down and dirty of hitting the buttons over and over and just using one good move until you win.

who hasn't killed a cloaker based soley on sound?

I concur that his videogaming abilities would be somewhat limites though, and he sounds pretty cocky.

To be honest the average 'soul calibur' player is awful :/
My flatmates and I are good players, most people I've seen otherwise are not.

To give you an indication of what I'm talking about one of my flatmates laughed his way through a tournament and won first place ...and he's not even the best one of us ¬.¬

Unless it's done with maxi button-bashing won't work against a decent player. With maxi you can't tell the difference between a really good player and a button basher anyway though :3

I would sooo rub it in his face if I beat him.

I mean I would be a huge **** purely for my own amusement.

*spikes controller off the ground clearly damaging it*

"Oh Yea! You can't handle this! If you can't stand the heat then you best get out of the fire! But you don't know where the fire exit is so your toast!"

Anyway....button mashing doesn't always win, blocking/dodging usually beats it because button mashers don't pay much attention to their movent. Games in which you can sidestep even improve the dodging.

And gratz to this guy, he's a real gamer so what's some ppl's problem ?

Button-mashing is one of the reasons why I prefer 2D fighters to 3D fighters. Button-mashing is laughably easy to beat in 2D fighters.

But you all miss the point. Why don't you tape your eyes shut, and see who wins?

He's probably the best <b>blind</b> gamer in the world. Clearly an acheivement.
