On a space station, everything is rationed. Power, water, light, food, air. Putting in a huge, overhead light fixture is an uneccessary expense if you're not worried about lighting up the whole room.

So how do you light a big empty hallway? You just tuck away enough cheap, low-power lighting to outline the edges of the room. Oh... there's steps there? Since when? Oh, right... we had to cut out a chunk of the floorboards to run that replacement coolant pipe through this sector... Well, tell you what. We don't want anybody to trip over those uneccessary steps we had to put in to work around the pipe, so let's just install a couple of those energency lights in here. Just to make the dangerous steps more visible, so nobody trips over them. I mean, it's not bright enough in here for traditional caution striping to work, now is it?

I agreee that the steps shouldn't be like this, though: [==][==][==][==][==][==] I mean, that's just wasteful. That's the kind of thing you'd seen in a mall or on the set of a talk show. The . . . [==] . . . . . . . . [==] . . . steps in the lower right hand corner of the screenshot make much more sense. If that's what you meant, I agree with you.

But light fixtures recessed into the kickplates of steps, just in general? Makes sense to me. If you're running a jurry-rigged, ramshackle space station on a low budget, and you need to light the steps, there's no sense in wasting a lot of money on bright overhead panel lighting when all you really need is a couple hundred strategically-placed lumens.

In space, no one can hear you cut corners!

But man, if you think this is bad, you should see what some of the TSA guys come up with on maneuvers. Urine recyclers dismantled and the tubes strung all through the tent's solar collector so the men can have hot water in the morning. Lightning-Resistant Faraday cages tapped to descramble television transmissions from a nearby planet. If you think the corps violate some fundamentals of architecture trying to stay within their budgets, you ain't seen nothing yet. Stop by the school of engineering the next time your local college has a career day. A TSA representative will be on-hand to disturb and fascinate you with tales of more abominations of interior design.

This is an awesome post. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Thankyou for brightening my day!

I agree, the ones in the lower right look fine. Its just the steps.

A WIP. I need some advice on what to do to the walls. The lighting stays though, I pretty much like that.

And yes I am changing those supports on the walls, they are a place holder for now.

Those ceiling lights would be better off behind a grate or something. The top of wall (diagonal) trim/band looks not great. But if you could make a custom texture that was continuous I could see it being a lot better.

I don't think the lighting's that great tbh. From the thumbnail I thought it was fullbright, and I'm still on the fence. Please tell me you suffered a fit of sarcasm when you wrote that part of the post.

If this is a one-off corridor then fair enough, but the compressed elevator texture can't be great for performance.

The general structure and brushwork is nice, but is lacking anything that would make it stand out. By "stand out" I don't mean make it super-memorable, merely original without being bland; but maybe the new supports will help to that effect.

It was a style test. It's not liked so it's scrapped. Thanks for feedback though Crispy.

    Another styletest.

Not too bad. I like the shape, it has something very authentically man-made about it. Unfortunately I fear it's too small for an MS. I'm assuming it's an NS map because of the RT in the alcove.

You could pull in/out those screens to give the walls some oomph, and I got just the idea: Indent the screen section in a bit and stick a grate over it (not too tight-knit; you still want to be able to see the screens as if they were real and usable).

Watch out for that skybox, though. You can kinda see into other parts of the map the way it is now.

Why is it so incredibly bright? That's nearly fullbright, man.

I would increase -gamma by 1

I would decrease brightness by 1000000000000000000000000000000000.

Might as well leave RAD out and you get the same effect <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> I think that super brightness is making most of your maps ugly...

Hmm I would have said "lighting can make or break a map" Cause the architecture seems alright to me. Could use a little more detail on the walls though.

First off I get moaned at as my maps are too dark, now they are too light. Can I ever win? Doubt it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'll decrease.

Did you really make it bigger? It still looks like the same amount of building space as before. Go to the Frontiersmen Strategy Forum and look at an MS layout tutorial to see how much space a good MS should have...

Looks quite hot. Few things. Never clip vent2 at an angle unless you are curving it around a corner. It angers the vent2 gods. (see the bottom of the trim around the openings) Also, I think you should pick a different trim texture for that anyways. It doesn't look quite right next to it around the door, and it looks better around the door.
