My Sister Broked Teh Intarweb

For the past few days, our home internet connection - a mighty 8mbps with a 10000mb per month quota - has been running like, well, crap. Major, major lag, the likes of which unknown since the time of the dialup. Like, slow enough to consider going and getting coffee every time a webpage loads. Anyway, we couldn't work out what was going on and assumed it was something wrong at the ISP's end.

As of late, my sister's been downloading a lot of anime. She's actually managed to fill the brand new hard disks on mum's new machine, which we've been sorta using as a fileserver. Strangely enough, it didn't occur to anyone that the two were related - until we finally checked our volume usage online to discover that my sister's efforts to download the whole freaking internet pushed us over the quota by about 2684mb.

So we've been throttled back to a puny 64k. Grr. Fortunately only for another three days, though.

Note to self: learn how to configure the firewall to cap traffic to\from my sister's machine :/

Modem next to the computer, router in the closet. If I start to lag, I just unplug the rest of the house.
    Anyone know comcast's dl/ul limit?

Heh, I pay 5 dollars a month for subpar webhosting and I get 25 gigabytes of transfer.

    That's Europe for you.

Do the Scandinavian countries have caps?

Bandwidth limits are the sux indeed. I've got a 1mbps connection with no cap, and I prefer mine to yours. Your connection is like filling a bucket with a firehose. I may only have a garden hose, but I'm filling a bag of holding.

I use like, 200 megabytes per month

My ISP claimed they were uncapped, but I got an email warning that due to "technical difficulties" in my area,I was being disconnected. Now I realized that the ISP must have been too good to be true, since it was giving the same service as mainstream providers for ~$15 less. So I called them, think that these difficulties were a euphemism for the real problem.

Turns out my 90 GBs down and 50 GBs up in traffic for the month didn't sit well with them, and they were using a loophole in the contract to cut me off. Not wanting to lose the ISP, I asked for one more month, and the customer support guy essentially told me that as long as my uploads don't go over 10 GB, they don't care what I download. Since then I've been keeping within their hidden "cap" and no problems since.

So even if they say something is uncapped, this isn't always true.

My ISP caps you if you upload too much, but you have to upload an ungodly amount of data. Heavy Gaming/Surfing wont do it, but setting up an FTP server thats heavily used for more than a week will...

edit- i dont care about the cap, i almost never upload big files for hours at a time, and even if i did, i wouldnt want to step down to dsl (Where cable is almost triple the speed here)

I have 2gigs download and 1gig upload caps per day, based on 7-day average.

But I don't complain, it costs only 10€/month.

I'm sure she won't do it again (and not just because we've run out of space).

We don't usually download lots and lots of stuff, and the only reason we're on 8mbit instead of 512k is because there was some new infrastructure put in (or something) and so they started offering 8mbit for what we were already paying. It's something like $60 a month (Australian), including the phone. Although even the most expensive of the home schemes has a quota ($120 for 40 gig and phone).

    1. Take your story.
    2. Replace occurances of the word sister with roommate
    3. Replace anime with anime & porn

Now we have nearly identical stories.
