Confessions Of A Smurf

FlounderFlounder Join Date: 2004-09-12 Member: 31656Members
Yeah I know smurfing refers to someone who's actually good like [t]Mustang (Not that he does this, I'm just using him as an example cause he's 100 times better than me and most people have heard about him.) So before you write, "you have to be good to smurf you idiot," I'm gonna say it also means anyone who plays by a name other than their "official" name. I've actually been kicked/banned from a few servers simply because I haven't used this name. (Along with other asshattery of course, but they cited this as an extra reason to ban.)

Problem is, I don't like playing under it. When I choose a dumb name like (8)NSPlayer or My Dad Loves Your Dad, it makes the came more carefree. I actually play better too. I don't understand that part, but I do.

I know Flayra and Zero are pushing for everyone to have an official handle so we can track anyone in the community, either to make friends or to track down cheaters. But by doing that you make the game and the community into something serious. I use this game to get away from my identity, not to make a new one I have to worry about. Isn't that the whole reason people made games?

I know this topic probably doesn't apply to anyone but me, and there are more important things to talk about with what happened in London, so this will just be my late night rant. And if I'm completely wrong and Flayra and Zero haven't said this and I've made it up and everyone loves smurfing and even that term is made up, then I've just wasted a good 10 minutes I could have spent comming a game as No Commander.

alien(admin): This is ridiculous, this game is so stacked.
marine(clanner): not stacked, nsplayer is comm
alien: the SAME nsplayer that went 8-0 last game?
nsplayer: 9-0

I know what you mean, I find I have much more fun and possibly do better when smurfing because it is much more carefree.

    no-one cares if you smurf

edit: and yes it looks pretty dumb if a smurf isnt the top scorer or at least close (and yes this might sound ironic as hell)

You can call yourself whatever you want, but masquerading as an NSPlayer really just isn't funny anymore. Sorry

lmao, you in an irritable mood then?

I also play under a different name on select servers, mainly due to the way I am unable to keep my trap shut at idiots yelling hax at people I know who blatently dont. Server admins being mini hitlers etc... Admitedly this only applies to 2 servers that my clan also play on a little, hence me changing my name so its not immediatly recognisable. That and the fact people dont like getting killed by NSplayer's hillarious...

Anyway none of the above is supposed to be meant in a bad way, just ease of use when im in a no noob tolleration mood.

Done that once. The bitchass regs who I play with every day didn't even recognise my voice after playing all day . I found playing under a different name very fun to do for some reason. I think mainly because other people don't have expectations of you. I got a few compliments for good comming from the regs which I don't get when I play under my real nick because they know I can comm.

I think fakenicking is incredibly childish, done by those who think they are pro players. In my opinion, the only people who should do it should be the truely elite players (knife, lessthanthree, exi, terror).

I only see 3 reasons for fakenicking:

    1. To cheat
    2. To ruin the game (building 5 IPs at the start, dropping DCs at the start, etc...)
    3. To not let the opposition know who you are, becuase you truely are an elite player, and they will probably quit when they see you.

95% of fakenickers don't do it becuase of the 3 reasons above. They almost always whine a lot (-random player- killed d with LMG... <d> GET SOME RATES, FS.), but that's their nature, I think.

What really gets to me is the kids who use a single letter of the alphabet for their name- it makes communicating in the team much harder than it has to be (imagine telling someone named "i" to go somewhere, you will sound like someone with bad English referring to theirselves).

It's just a name, take a proper one, and keep that one, kthx.

I changed my nick frequently for around half a year, mostly because I enjoyed making up (somewhat weird) names. Not because I was particulary good, cheating or attempting to ruin the game, but I guess I'm a bit childish ... right, sherpa?

But I agree kids with randomly created letter / number names irritates me, the only reason for these names I can think of is to make it a pain in the **** to kick them

I really dont see the point in changing your name other than

    1) You Cheat
    2) You Plan To screw a game
    3) You are cursing an admin or whatever
    4) You are purposly breaking the rules
    5) You are hated and have to hide
    6) You are to l337 or whatever the **** (wth is with this ****)

(few of these have been restated)

I've seen people join in groups with names like "Noob Server, Newb Server, **** Server, and so on all in 1 group (they plan it on teamspeak or whatever) its just a retarded thing, i hate people who do this, its not a crime or whatever its just plan annoying, pointlessness most of the time (and theres really nothing you can do) lol i havent played ns but maybe 20 games in the passed 7 months, this is probably the least reason why i quit (i actualy didnt even think of it) i just got bored of the same old ns, no big changes, plus so many games have come out, awsome games like battlefield 2 will keep me busy till ns:s comes out

Seriously, the people where I care about the consistency of my identity a) often recognize the pattern b) tend to be on ventrilo with me. Other than that, why not freshen things up a bit with new names every now and then?

Plus, with the unreliability of going by name, you get to recognize frequent players movement and behavioral patterns more poignantly than if they permanently stuck to their nicks. Also, if you really care theres both friends and steamids (google or amped search) to verify a persons identity. I don't honestly think anyone really changes their nick to avoid detection (well, from GameTiger some people do - so you can't find out what server they're on, unless you randomly stumble across said server).

So yeah, this whole smurfing thing is more of a semi-transparent attempt to find weak grounds for some good ol' pointless hating. Gotta keep yourself busy with something if you freakin' suck at NS/life/googling.

I only change my name if I plan on hacking,
keeping my identity safe while I do something
that would make me seem bad, I rarely ever
do it for the "fun of it"

EDIT: Oh cmon, you guys can't tell me you've
never gotten curious once? I used a hack before,
