Game Freezeups

I've run a few tests on this but I'm still not sure what to do...What I have been testing is to see what is causing NS to freeze up when I hit esc. to change an option, disconnect, or quit in the game. I have tested without music playing (still freezes), I have tested with various programs not running in the background (still freezes), I cannot use the task manager since my whole computer freezes.

My system specs are as follows...
HP
512mb RAM
AMD Athlon 2800+ 2.08Ghz
Ati Radeon 9600XT

About 30% RAM usage before game startup
About 2% CPU usage before game start up

CPU goes strait to 100% when playing, and the RAM goes to 80-90% usage while playing.

My game has never frozen on previous versions of NS and it hasn't frozen before on my older computer that is a 5 year old gateway with sucktastic everything (currently dismantled)

I feel like I'm playing russian roulette with the esc. key because sometimes it doesn't freeze my game...

Could it possibly that there is way too much going on in the server I'm playing on? Such as too many turrets, Chambers, etc.?

    my game freezes now and then 2...i dunno what causes it but everything stops moving (not like connection error) and then the screen dims a bit...i have to ctrl+alt+del to get out of it...same thing when hitting quit it freezes and i have to ctrl+alt+del...any help?

    i can only get into one 3.03 server and all other servers either kick me out or freeze after 5 seconds of playing.
    cs:source does the same thing aswell

    if your cpu uasge is hitting 100% during play, alt+tab out then ctrl+alt+delete >> process tab >> right clikc hl.exe >> lower the priority to below normal.

    This works for me, and is a steam bug thats affecting most steam games for a minority of people on and off now for 6months almost (they dont aknolwedge the issue).

    And if anyone wants to flame lowering cpu usage will not work it will ruin your game go away... HL does not require the cpu usage that seems to be designated and runs tenfold better on below normal or mega low depending on the server your on, this does not apply to MR 486 with 32mb ram.

    ahh good stuff, I find that on occasion after a few hours of play on 32 man servers I may need to lower it right down as it can start to jump again.

    what about me for some reson my task maneger is disabled by the admin (which is me) and i cant do anything about it
