mhm thats true but...if you move with a teambuddy your chances to

    a) kill more
    b) destroy more
    c) lock down or build something important

    increase drastically <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think the point is that a team should always have at least one person (and with smaller teams you really can't spend more than one person) going different direction from the start, when the actual team is building res/securing hives at the opposite side of the map. This theoretically divides the alien threat in half.

The problems start when half of your team are going rambo in random directions being mostly useless...

I frequently occupy the support classes, you can
often see me welding your **** and keeping you alive.
I also sometimes act as a Field Sergeant, seeing how
nessecary it is to keep the others going to the way-
    points...

    You forgot a few classes

    "The DJ"

<i> Rourks jogged towards the cargo bay. Commander had said to head over there pronto and set up a resource tower on a vespene geyser that had burst through the floor, sometime between when the original base inhabitants had been slaughtered, and now.

About halfway there he heard the familiar crackle on the radio of someone starting to say something and then.... "We didn't start the fire! It was always burning since the world was turning, we didn't start the fire! No we didn't light it but we're trying to fight it." The music continued on and then a familiar voice starting singing with it.

"JAKEY what the HELL" Bellowed Rourks into his microphone. "We're in a COMBAT SITUATION! TURN that **** OFF NOW!! ....Still the music played on. Rourks reminded himself to file a complaint with the decision makers when he got back. "Jakey when we get back I am going to kill you my AAAAAARRRRRGGHHH. Rourks was unable to finish. The fade slash had caught him in the vocal chord and all that came out was a gargling sound. The last thing he heard before lights out was " SnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOP."</i>

The "DJ" is the group member who usually sits around..maybe in base and blasts the microphone with his favorite music. Usually this gets silence loving marines killed because they cant hear skulks coming up behind them. Occasionally however with the right beat the rhythm can focus a single marine or perhaps more than one and focus them with the power of the funk.

    Equipment
    Mic

    Pros/Cons

If its good music hey why not
    Its annoying
You cant hear noises that you need to hear to stay alive
The guy himself isnt doing a damn thing

"The rookie (Or noobie if you want to be a **** about it)"

<i> James ran with his teammates to the coordinates the commander had set out for him. James looked around but couldn't recognize the base layout. "Damnit, if only I had payed attention during the mission briefing!" he muttered to himself. Leading him was Lt. Billingsly a 4 month vet of the kharaa war, pretty respectable givin the average life expectancy of a marine NOT commanding a squad was 2 hours in a combat situation. Billingsly looked back and him and winked "It's OK kid just stick close and fire when we fire and don't, and I repeat DON'T do anything stupid."

James nodded dumbly. But as much as he tried to keep up with the Lieutenants pace
he couldn't help but fall behind, and Billingsly wasen't stopping to let him catch up. Finally they reached door with a control panel to the left of it. "OK" Billingsly rasped. "Motion tracking had confirmed that there was 3 skulks on the other side of the door, when I open it i want you two to blast them alright?...1....2.....3 GO." Billingsly pushed the button and the door raised up. The first two skulks rushed for the third marine, the marine aimed down and managed to get a couple rounds in one of the skulks before they tore his legs out from under him. Billingsly aimed at the fallen marine and sprayed an extra long volley at the skulks who were still chewing on his body. James stared at the fallen marine dumbfounded. "SHOOT" yelled Billingsly. James pointed his weapon in the general direction of the skulk and pulled the trigger but to his dismay the weapon kicked up and he missed the skulk. Before he could correct his aiming the skulk's jaws were closed around his neck, oh **** he thought just before.....SNAP.

Billingsly put two high caliber pistol bullets into the skulks brain, but it was too late for james. "God damn newbie's...." said Billingsly as he shook his head. "Where do they get these guys? They're greener than my collard greens. </i>

    Cons
    Many

    Equipment
If your smart just what he starts with, but HMG and GL are easy to use

Welder. Always. Combat or NS, I'll be there, welding everything. If the server has end game awards, 99% of the time I'm there under Golden Wrench. I've joined CO servers with the CC in the red and people forgoing welders for JetPacks with the hive at full health so my first or second buy is ALWAYS a welder. I strive to keep my team alive through armour and structure repair. Killing stuff is an added bonus. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I do like all of those jobs. It depends if people are with me or not. I tend to be a Seargeant/mechanic when people are around me. If I'm alone, or only with 1 other person, I tend to be a scout/freelancer/hunter. Just depends. Oh and when you can tell the game's nearly over, I like to be the demolition man <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That which you call a Field Sargeant I call a Field Commander, or FC for short.

I have always tried playing the role of an FC. You hit it right on with the FC's pros and cons. Luckily I have the wisdom to know when I can't play FC and when I can. To really do this role you need to already be friends a few of the people on your team and clear sounding headset is a <u>must</u>.

    <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><a href='http://s8.invisionfree.com/xzianthia/index.php?showtopic=111' target='_blank'>READ ME!!!</a></span>
(Note: In advance I had permission form the other authors to reprint and modify their work)

Here what I'll add to the stuff about an FC after all this time:

<u>requirements:</u><ul><li>clear, not too loud/quiet or broken quality headset</li><li>3+ friends on your team, clan or scrim preferable to pub but I've had most stunning successes on pub</li><li>friendly and fun yet firm and wise demeanor; a selfless attitude, preferablely a contagious one</li><li>an understood hiearchy by your team<b> (FC > CCC > SL > SS; 1,1,1-5,1)</b></li><li>a willingness to <i><b>listen</b></i> to others</li><li>a willingness to not give any orders that you wouldn't do yourself</li><li>a willingness to put your team and objective above yourself</li><li>a willingness to lead the assault (the FC is effective because he/she <i>is</i> there among the troops; something the CCC cannot do and history has proven is a valuable factor in battle: Julius Caesar for example)</li></ul>
<u>preferances:</u><ul><li>your friend is in the Comm Chair</li><li>your team will obey the hiearchy</li><li>your team will actually follow your orders (ie: stop humping the armory)</li><li>your orders will make sense</li><li>you will make brilliant strategies and wise troop movements</li><li>you will listen to your soldiers, and won't carry this holier-than-thou attitude (it should be the opposite)</li><li>You are a regular on this server, or better yet you are an admin of this server, or even better still this <i>is</i> your server</li><li>lots and lost of res, dead aliens, and toys for everyone on your team! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> (duh)</li></ul>

Now my second order of business is to critique your classes. Let's be honest here sure it may be nice to have unique classes but most of the time you want to have the flexibility.

    Imagine:
"Oh commander I can't taek down that hive that's almost dead becuase it isn't my job."
WHAT THE HELL! No, just no. Structure is good but if it's too rigid then a smart enemy will hit your weaknesses and cripple you. Then you all die and loose.

So you need to include somewhere that common sense must dictate ability to cross over between classes

For example to use myself, when I'm an FC I usually carry a shotgun (my favorite weapon) which I use to kill fades and skulks who are trying to kill my comrades. But sometimes late in a game I am the FC but have HA in which case I pick up by second favorite weapon the GL and make a clever wall of explosions to clear the road while my shotgun & hmg troops advance. (usually LMG/LA troops lead the way or cover the squad's six) So according to your system I'm and FC who doubles as a mechanic, support, or demoman (btw, that name is a total rip-off from TFC, but an appropriate one).

Thirdly, Rambo... (or freelance as you call it, weak name m8. What is he a writer? Phear me Onos or I will type you to death! lol <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) Rambo is not a class. Repeat after me children: <b>RAMBO IS NOT A CLASS</b>. Scout/ninja certainly<i> is </i>a valid class but Rambo is not.

Why you ask? Simple, Rambo's hurt your team much, much more than they help. Any adroit alien team today identifies rambos as those tasty free res snacks all it takes are one or two skilled skulks to destroy any ground based rambo, and if he's a JP using flier, the lerk's spore spam or a skilled fade can destroy him in little time at all. Or even better what can one rambo hope to do against alien structures? A few OCs can kill a rambo easily enough and not to mention the aliens will be alerted to your attack.

However the <i>real</i> damage rambos do to their team is not just the waste of <b>resources</b>, but also the waste of <b>manpower</b> and <b>time</b> which happen to be just as important as the resources you have. Seriously, any experience NS player who actually know strategy can tell you that. Think about it, you have an even 12vs12 game; marines loose one manpower for the guy who goes commander [12-1=11]; now two people decide they want to go off and rambo [11-2=9]; now lets take a hypothetical situation and say there are at least 2 people dead in the spawn queue or otherwise inactive for both teams and any given time on average which brings us to a 7vs10 game; and one more thing, on pubs much time is wasted on humping the armory and account for gestating aliens, the difference between the time for a marine travel a distance to an objective and an alien to travel to a destination, etc. so that ratio is a tad bit more unbalanced. Normally everything is balanced perfectly but when people stop working as a team... time, res, and manpower start getting wasted which is a detriment. Skill and the way the game plays out are still the determinate but if you plan to a little winning with your fun then you'll be wise to discredit the rambos.

vote <span style='color:blue'>delay sticky until revisions made, then review and revote</span>

I did that. Please reread my posts. Not sure if it was in the initial post but it was definately included that there are "Main Classes" you are good at and which you ll try to play everytime. But still you will switch between these roles to get the best effects for everyone. But that wont change the fact that one or two of these classes are your favourite(s).

But i always thought Freelancer is a name for a "lonesome cowboy" "lone wolf" "individual" ("rambo" ^^). But i guess thats not too important...
    - Well tbh...Rambo is a class. Most people do not like this class if they see other players doing it. But even though they hate this class they sometimes switch to it without even knowing.
What I described with this rambo class wasnt a "load full ammo, run out, shoot at the next RT, die, again" player. Its more a flexible person. Someone who scouts through different areas and does constant damage to the alien team. I see good players at public servers who are clanners doing this very very often. It is just their way to play at public servers...because they dont take it serious. And still...if they have decent aim and skill they can get high scores. And this means
    - spawn que
    - rfk
    - map domination
Of course...if "NsPlayer" runs around ramboing he is no use to anyone...but if he yells into his mic and tries to be a FC or if he gets a welder and only welds unimportant stuff making it a waste of 5 res...he wont have any use as another class too. Do you get my point?

Thats it..basically. See pm for more informations.
