Give Your Answers To These Common Situations

<div class="IPBDescription">What would you do?</div> Certain situations seem to happen a great deal, and really tear apart a Marine Team, either through repeated failures-to-overcome or lack of commander discipline. What would you do? (post your own questions if you think of any, too!)

- A skulk in a vent by your base is up in a hard-to-reach vent, and just evolved to Fade, and is angling Acid Rockets into your base.

- A long hallway is being guarded by yet another Fade, who is continually dropping back to D chambers to heal while pelting your marines. A seige base is deemed too expensive.

- Onos (with a Lerk dropping Umbra) is in your base, rampaging. You just took back the third hive, and do not need to worry about more coming. your team is running around firing LMGs uselessly.

- You have multiple resource points to take, and very little resources. Yo uneed to come up with a way to efficiently defend them.

i am not an experienced commandor, but i have done some "basebombing" before with Gorge/Lerk/Fade before, and i know a solution and a way to avoid this.

to avoid it, simply close the vent with a welder - fire with the welder on the "yellow marks on some of the vents/doors to seal/open them - and/or mine the vent itself. Against Gorge/Lerk/Fade in the vent, use Grenade launcher(or machine guns - if nothing better)

another solution could be to give a Marine a Jetpack and simply fly up to into the vent(haven't tried this one)
Marines can also build towers in some of the tunnels to cut off Alien paths.

Rush him. When dealing with a fade, always rush him. You can not kill a fade from far away, his range weapon is a hell of a lot better than your's. Get a group and rush the fade, even if you only have lmg's, you have a better chance of killing him that way then staying put and eventually dying of splash damage.

Try your hardest to take out the Lerk, either with your knife or welder. If you have GL's, use them. Enough people welding a Onos will kill him, I've been in several games where I've gotten knife/welder kills on them. You're going to have a lot of casulties, but not much else you can do.

Got a GL? Then use it to drop a barrage while the rest of the team rushes forward. Once the team is by the corner, stop dropping the GL shots and let the front guy ambush the Fade as he comes out again.

Otherwise, if you have two people with HA and welder, just move in column, the second guy welding up the front guy continously, and walk up to the fade. Make sure the commander drops a few medpacks. Even better if you are three.

No HA? Get away from the splash radius and wait patiently until the Fade comes up to see what happened.

Or go another route. Rushing him will just kill you.

So will standing there taking splash damage. Obviously if you had a HA with a HMG/GL/welder it would make things a lot easier, but I was talking if you only had the basics. Chances are if you're there attacking, you're there for a reason. You <i>need</i> to get past there. You have a better chance of killing the fade by rushing, his acid rocket is a lot better of a range weapon, and the only way to kill him is get on his **obscenity**.

Can't say I approve of dropping buildings on units to immobilize them though it IS very effective. Feels very cheap to me. *shrug*

"- A skulk in a vent by your base is up in a hard-to-reach vent, and just evolved to Fade, and is angling Acid Rockets into your base."

Ignore him for the time being. He'll just retreat into the vent whenever he's wounded anyway, so it won't do much good. Tell the commander to get a grenade launcher before he does too much damage, build the necessary facilities if they don't exist, and leave the fade be until the GL is available.

One less fade watching the hive. While waiting for the GL, go off and press the attack. Assuming a 10/10 team split, with 2 gorges on the alien team working, 1-2 dead aliens, 7 active marines and 1-2 dead marines, that means there's 5 active aliens about, and 7 active marines. Press on a hive. Force that fade to come out and attack or join his buddies in defending his hive. One fade can't do too much damage, so long as those respawnign take care of him if he pops out of the vent. If he doesn't, the GL will take care of him.

"- A long hallway is being guarded by yet another Fade, who is continually dropping back to D chambers to heal while pelting your marines. A seige base is deemed too expensive."

If they have fades, we should have heavy weapons, or we're screwed anyway. Charge the fade. After he comes back from his D-chamber retreat, rush him with as man people as possible. He's mortal. He'll die before he gets back to it.

If the D chamber is protected by several offensive chambers and right by where th efade is shooting from, tell the commander to get his head out of his **obscenity** and get a siege turret up. In that situation it ain't too expensive, it's the rigth tool for the job. Otherwise, rush the fade and kill him. Dont' play his game.

"- Onos (with a Lerk dropping Umbra) is in your base, rampaging. You just took back the third hive, and do not need to worry about more coming. your team is running around firing LMGs uselessly."

    Distress Beacon, repeatedly.

Ask for a GL, spam it all to hell, and if all else fails try knifing - it works just fine through umbra. An onos can take a lot of punishment. A lerk cannot.

"- You have multiple resource points to take, and very little resources. Yo uneed to come up with a way to efficiently defend them."

The battle may already be lost if you get to this point. But the best way to defend is to attack. Save up for a minute or two, outfit a group of marines with HA, welders, HMGs, and a GL or two, and send them at a hive you haven't attacked recently (or at all). Chances are they won't be ready for it, you might get a victory, and if you don't the aliens will start coming out of the woodwork to defend it. Try to slip some of the leftover marines into the resource areas and plop down the nodes and try their best to defend them. If nothing else, the node marines can draw aliens away from the hive attackers.

If you kill a hive, you might have won, if you fail, you were probably going to lose anyway, so it's a gamble.

Pray you have good leaders on the ground.

Understand before I get into this all...that in most cases this should not have been allowed to happen in the first place. If it did then your doing a poor job commanding...but even a poor commander should have an idea to try and continue the fight from this point. Now I am posting these suggestions with the idea that there is still a chance to win. In most cases if this has happened to you, in game, it's probably almost over, the aliens have 2 hives and are about to get a third, you have no money, no Nodes out there...etc.

    - A skulk in a vent by your base is up in a hard-to-reach vent, and just evolved to Fade, and is angling Acid Rockets into your base.

Use a Gl to move that Kahraa away from the vent...once you pop a few rounds up there...if you don't kill him he'll run like hell. Next get a marine to wield that vent shuut asap...preffearbly send in two...one with the gl to keep the fades away and the other with the wielder...remember though...they have to get out later and get back to base...you may want to assualt the origin of that vent then when they are finished to buy them time to leave.

    - A long hallway is being guarded by yet another Fade, who is continually dropping back to D chambers to heal while pelting your marines. A seige base is deemed too expensive.

You may not have the resources...or inclination to build a full turret Fac and Siege them...sometimes you should, in this case...send in one or two marines with GL's and at least one with a HMG to cover them...make sure they fire in stagared shots, one reloads will the other fires. Prefferably all marines should have HA as well to make sure they don't go down to fast...however...that is almost the cost of your siege base...but the marines can keep moving forward. Be sure to fully assult and destroy the alien forward base and continue to push forward from that point.

    - Onos (with a Lerk dropping Umbra) is in your base, rampaging. You just took back the third hive, and do not need to worry about more coming. your team is running around firing LMGs uselessly.

if this has happened you've probably done something really bad before...however you may have a chance if you have secured that third hive. You can either abandon your base, which i don't recommand, or as said try and imoblize the onos with a building of an kind...make sure to drop one or two HMG's quickly to help your marines finish him off. if possible have your marines take down the Lerk first....use knifes if they must

    - You have multiple resource points to take, and very little resources. Yo uneed to come up with a way to efficiently defend them.

This is probably start of the game...you'll need to decide this yourself. I recommand...forget about fully defending every point...run out..secure what you can...try and drop nodes on as many...semi secure nodes as possible...if nothing else you gain the RP's from them and deny them to the Kahraa for a short time. I do recommand take one or two...turret them up a bit...and move forward...in thoery if you keep attacking you won't have a stray kahraa getting behind and attacking that node latter...and if he does...you should have the occasoinal marine at the spawn loading up...have him head and and drop that skulk...if possible give hima wielder...he can do quick work and you can keep moving.

I'd either use a Grenade Launcher to flush him out, get a man with a jetpack to flush him out, or better yet, weld the vent (if possible) before he even gets up there.

Constantly micromanage health and ammo onto your troops (or, if they have HA, get them in front with one or two guys with welders supporting). Fades that are trying to hit-and-run won't really be expecting melee combat, so chase him down and take him out or make him run away from the defense chambers. Then get the guys with welders to take those out while the HA guys cover them.

Have your troops guard the area around a node and place mines. They're cheap, so it shouldn't be too taxing. The put the tower down, return to an armory, and load up on mines again. Repeat.

I had this exact scenario happen on ns_bast (engine room, feedwater) just the other day. My roommate was commander (experienced) and I was his go-to guy. The aliens had built a wall of lame just on the other side of the airlock, and we had tried to siege it but encountered the dreaded siege bug. The aliens responded with a nasty fade-gorge combo in the vents leading directly into the base from the airlock; they were pummeling our base and our marines quite heavily. The commander spawned a grenade launcher and had me spam the vent from all angles. It worked: the gorge died immediately, and the fade shortly after since he had no way of healing at that point. Thinking quickly the comm spawned a jetpack and a welder and had me zip up into the vent to seal it from the inside. I was taking fire from the wall of lame inside the airlock, but he devoted all his attention to keeping me alive as I welded it shut. Having sucessfully completed that, we were able to turn the tide and press the attack without fear of our base coming under fire; needless to say, we went on to win that match hands down. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- A long hallway is being guarded by yet another Fade, who is continually dropping back to D chambers to heal while pelting your marines. A very common scenario, and an easily beatable one if you don't have weenie marines who are afriad to die. Simply rush the fade all at once. Sure, some of you will die, but no fade can stand up to 4 or 5 marines rushing with guns blazing. Playing pop-up only gives the fade the advantage. Check the thread on fear for a better description.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- Onos (with a Lerk dropping Umbra) is in your base, rampaging. At this point you're fighting a losing battle, and may not be salvagable if your team is useless. Distress beacon is valuable if you have several dead marines, but if they're alive and elsewhere you may have very serious problems. This is just as likely to be a player problem as a commander problem, and in that case there's really very little the commander can do to salvage the situation. Even if you stop the onos, you still must defend the newly-gotten hive, your main base, <i>and</i> take a 2nd hive to prevent fades from wearing you down. That is more often than not more than the marines can handle and the game is often lost at this point anyway, unless your marines somehow spontanteously get <i>good.</i>

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- You have multiple resource points to take, and very little resources. Again, this is a losing situation, but if you have good marines it may be salvageable. Have some of the marines stay behind and defend your most critical resource points until you can set up somewhat more permanent defenses, or are able to relieve the pressure of alien attacks by putting them on the defensive. Do not expect to encounter that situation often, however. Keep in mind that it's hives, not resource points, that really matter; resource points allow you to build/upgrade/spawn toys, while denying hives to the aliens in the first place means that you won't be facing the fades and onos that you're probably spending toys on.

If there is a guy in the vents, use your pistol. The pistol does damage faster then the LMG or HMG at that range. If you start using your LMG or HMG, they will pull back after a few hits, however 10 hits from a pistol comes really fast (no cap on firing speed, dependent on mouse clicking I think)

I've had this happen to me on caged once or twice and every time there was a gorge in there with the skulk and he had stacked some DCs in the vent. So the solution there would be to place a seige turret, (assuming this is on caged) preferably near the resource node so when it's taken out the DCs it can take out some alien buildings south of your base.

Either get the marines to follow him when he retreats or get 1-2 marines to circle round and hide in the DCs (assuming there are no OCs there as well) and wait for the fade to come back for healing or you could do both at once.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- Onos (with a Lerk dropping Umbra) is in your base, rampaging. Concentrate your fire on the lerk first because it is unlikely that he will be able to stay in the umbra, even if he does enough bullets should get through to kill him because he is rather weak. After the lerk is dead, use distress becon to call everyone back and order them to concentrate their fire on the Onos which should kill him quickly

If I had a large team at my disposal I would leave 1-2 marines at each node to guard them until I can afford to protect the node with turrets. If I had a smaller team (6-7) I would give every second marine some mines and have one marine to place them around the node, the rest of the team would move on to the next node while the mines are placed. When the mines have been placed the mine layer would follow the rest of the team as a sweeper, cleaning up any aliens the rest of the team missed on they're way through

    Fade in the vent:

Use a nade launcher to push him back then send a guy with a jet pack up to weld it shut. Really this should be done at the start of the round.

    Long hallway with a fade:

Get as many many marines as possable and either rush him (probably won't work) or have someone play him at his game while another group circle round behind him.

    Onos and lerk in base:

Distress beacon, nade spam, knife, distress beacon etc

Lots of RPs to take and a way to defend them efficiently:

I assume this is the start of a game, if not your screwed. If it's the start of a game then you need to take as many as possable as fast as possable then start turreting them up, the ones in and around the hives should be the main ones as they could form the basis of a mini base with phase gate that can be used hold the hive locations.
