Improve Your Classic Marine Skills

<div class="IPBDescription">Isn't this what co was designed for?</div> I found that after a lot of Combat, my shotgun skills were great, but my lmg skills were... lacking.

It should be obvious, but it took me a while to figure it out. So I'm helping you out <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Next time you play Combat, instead of rushing Weap1 > Shotgun, try hanging out with lmg for a while. For instance:

Mine > Resupply > Armor 1 before you start towards shotgun.

For pistol practice, get resupply immediately (you burn ammo for it quickly). And you HAVE to bind it to your mousewheel for maximum speed <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    No need to bind to mousewheel <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    And yes, I like sticking with LMG. It gives more practice that's needed - after all, in NS, you're stuck with an LMG more than you are with anything else.

    ya but by that time they got fades and maybe even onos i was playing all day today and they get fade and onos way too fast in combat its almost impossable to win unless u got good players on ur team witch i didnt we lost every round. I was best player on my team.

    I do this a surprising amount.
    If you just climb the weapon tree instead of new guns, a lvl3 lmg can take down those skulks in seconds.

    Plus if your with people you know, a squad of those lmgs wont be hit by anything, works wonders.

    usually i am going straight for jetpacks at co_ (with ressupply somewhere in it)...this means i use the LMG a long time.

    Personally i have problems with damage1 sgs...dunno...but i am a lot better with LMGs then with sgs as long as the damage is at d0 or d1. As soon as i have d2 or 3 the sg becomes my favorite weapon.

    resupply - dmg 1 - a1 - a2 - dmg 2 - sg - jp - hmg.

    i get sg wen there is about 2 fades or if the fade is pr0 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The shotgun is so **** easy to use, I never get it early on in co_.

    a1, resup, d1, d2, d3, a2, jp, sg

    For the win!?

    Good advice. And I often do this. I improved my lmg and skulking skills by not upgrading past what you'd get in classic normally.
  • 2_of_Eight2_of_Eight Join Date: 2003-08-20 Member: 20016Members
    Exactly. This applies to aliens too. I get the upgrades I'd most likely have in a NS game. Meaning 1 hive attacks, 1 chamber upgrade, that's it. Later on, 2 hive attacks, 2 chamber upgrades (different ones).
    And no 3/3/HA/HMG against skulks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    call me crazy, but for CO i use the folloing path: resup, d1, d2, d3, a1, SG, a2, jp. i get SG and JP because by the time i'm there there's like 4 focus-cara-regen-celerity fades

    when i played co_ with my clanbuddies and we wanted to improve our skills a bit we chose only 1 upgrade at each side (no focus, cloaking, 2nd hive ablity, mt)

    I agree with DC Darkling, although you can fix the levels to what you want to practice too.
    What I was doing is practicing a 1v3/4 skulks as marine, and seeing how fast you'd kill them. You could get any upgrade, but so could the skulk. The objective is to kill the chair.

    But really, you'd probably just practice aim in combat, not ns skills, unless the other alien team goes for the proper upgrades too. Silent/celerity/leap doesn't help ns skill cause you can't get it.

    And...in ns there's a commander, so you'd probably be getting a med in a battle much faster.

    CO does work sometimes when used as a trainer. Get a few clanmates/friends/whatever together on a private server and you can practice useful skills like spotting cloakwalkers. It's got uses.

    If you get poor FPS, you might do better with a lv 0/1 LMG vs a lv 2/3 LMG. The recoil increase is really disorenting when FPS is low, and makes aiming much more difficult than it already is with low FPS.

    Just a tip though- the LMG/HMG rely on tracking ability, and on a lower grade computer that's not always a viable option. If you're stuck with that, just try to stick with the shotgun, it's more about timeing than tracking ability.

    i dont go past sg level 3 dmg this is how i do it dmg 1 - shotgun - resup - d1 - d2 - d3 - a1 - a2 - jetpack/sometimes heavy - catayls
  • AntrelAntrel Join Date: 2005-02-11 Member: 40737Members
    a1, w1, sg, w2, w3, a2, jp, resup.
    There's no reason you should be getting resupply before JP. Unless the Alien team is horrible.
  • pulsarpulsar Join Date: 2005-04-10 Member: 48033Members, Constellation
    i get resup - w1 - a1 - catalyst - a2 - a3 - jp or heavy - w2 - w3 - sg - mines and others

    binding +attack to mwheel FTL
    cos it means no bunnyhopping without scripts. i find i can fire my pistol pretty damned fast now just by click my mouse button.

    it's kinda fun to go full lvl 3 upgrades with lmg and resupply and no JP/HA once in a while. it makes you look like a pure vanilla marine until you starting owning them. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    if you want to win
    damage1->shotgun->armor1->armor2->jetpack->hmg->catalyst->resupply->damage2->damage3

    the reason that marines barely win:

    Your upgrade selection sucks. Even after 20 minutes only a few people have jetpack. I usually get a jetpack and shotgun after 5 minutes. everyone else should do the same. Dont get all of that worthless stuff before jetpack. A team of 7 jetpacks or more 10 minutes into the game = easy win for marines. But usually there are only 1 or 2 jetpacks 10 minutes into the game because people get damage upgrades which are completely worthless. 10% wont save you. get jetpack or heavy armor early in the game.

    damage upgrades should be the last thing you get. you dont need them if you can actually aim.

    ok, it can be done but it aint easy if they got a decent fade.

    i have a jetpack and hmg before the fade has carapace, regeneration and celerity and sometimes before they have fade, for that matter. i dont really waste my time doing fade one on one battles. ill attack the fade if my team is attacking the fade with me. usually ill just go to the hive and kill the skulks, lerks, and gorges.

    one i get catalyst with my hmg, the fades are no match even with all upgrades.

    The point is not to win when doing this, it is to get experience and practice using the LMG. When playing for practice I often changing my name, dropped the icon, and simply had lvl1 armor and resupply the entire game and nothing else, eventually getting up to a lvl3 LMG as more aliens became higher lifeforms or super skulks. Keep trying to kill that superfade with a catpack and heavy all you want, that's not improving your core skills that will enable you to kill a good fade in classic, which is where it counts. Fades don't respawn in classic, they're back in your face within a minute in combat.

    For those of you having issues with marine gameplay, sit back and watch how you play. Do you expose yourself when you don't need to, do you leave enough room between you and where a skulk could be waiting, are you checking ambush spots or just running by/thru? Most of marine gameplay isn't aiming, it's knowing when to advance, when to sit still, and when to run away. Think about how much time in a game is spent moving around versus actually shooting at something and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Most marines aren't good at it not due to lack of aim (although this makes a bad situation worse), they're not good because they don't think about where they're moving to and from in relation to where aliens are, aren't, or could be.

    You can run one config for aliens and one for marines. I have mousewheel bound to +fire on marine.cfg and +jump on aliens, it's quite possible.

    yes.. unless your mouse has an option which increases the number of lines scrolleed per click in the mousewheel.

    im not sure if it would work. i know my mouse has an option that can make it so you scroll down like 100 lines in one click which wuld be effective for pistol
