I dont mind the plugin, if you enjoy it then go for it. The problem is when people start basing their opinions on things like balance with this plugin in mind. Much like how the latest "remove the web" thread is going. There are already a few people that have added webs are fine with extralev........

Believe it.
It blew up the NS community.

It is co that screw up, more specifily, extralevels screw up ns. Take a stat in your belonged server. How many people there cannot even place a mine on ip/pg properly but just stick to co?

Half an hour of combat or more is painful. But with zerging Onos that charge forever fighting flying heavy armour trains.. Where has NS gone?

Interesting, I've never even seen this plug-in. I usually play at RichTV and SC Hamptons, so I guess they don't use it.

Between AMX and AMXX there are 2811 downloads of this out there. That tell me it's the most popular plugin NS has ever seen. Ever.

I enjoy this plugin for what I like to call the "lol-factor". Get level 9 cybernetics and backwards bunnyhop to outrun celerity leaping skulks, blinking fades, and charging onos. Throw cybernetics in the mix and listen to the aliens whine.

From a serious gameplay stance, this plugin is a godawful abomination. As if combat itself weren't a big enough travesty. It further reduces the chance of skilled players coming out of these combat servers. When I hear someone crying about how they would have dropped a fade on ns_nothing if only the "stupid nub comm" had upgraded static...

I dare not continue for fear of falling into a state of rage from which I will not this time recover.

If combat didnt have about 1000 plugins on every server it might be fun.

In the UK, there are co_ servers with ExtraLevels plugins and without. YO clan server seems to host co_ that is close to vanilla. Good server too. (No, I'm not a YO clan member).

I tink the marines need more weapon upgrades to increase the damage of the guns. It becomes impossible to kill onos once they have all the fancy stuff, the damage supplied is simply insufficient.

I didn't really expect any of the anti-CO community to appreciate this plugin to begin with.

The bottom line is that it amplifies what combat is all about. If you like combat chances are you'll appreciate this plugin (assuming you've taken the time to learn good combos of new upgrades). Go look at the 3 aero combat servers. Full pretty much during all reasonable hours of the day? That's what I thought. They all run this plugin.

I used to run this plugin on my server until we became **NS ONLY**.

Stephen Hawkings just called in and reconfirmed my original statements.
• LeetLlamaLeetLlama Join Date: 2003-08-27 Member: 20260Members
The great thing about the aero servers is that they bounce you around until you get into a non-full server Their map list is rather dry though.

The main problems I have with combat, that plague both normal and extended servers, is the viability of HA (HA vs devour) and the fact that redemption does not give exp. Fix those two problems and you will go a long way to balancing CO.

Making the game as differnt from Classic as possible? Sorry, I don't think so.

I am by no means anti-combat. Im more against some of the arguments against combat, but the mods I have seen going around the servers... They're just plain silly.

There is a plugin that gives you random stuff/punishments when you say rollthedice. It is much much worse. Like an onos that gets god mode for a minute can't smash0r the CC.

CO is allready way too much "one man army".

I don't mind servers that increase max level to 15; but I hate servers that have that damned "/menu" plug-in!

All you have to do to win with it, as marine, is take that cyberkinetic implant so that you run at the speed of a Spanish celerity lerk- you can't be stopped!

So many complaints about the balance and you still don't get it ?
Besides that I enjoy the plug-in, there exists the following problem:

Many admins just install the plugin because of its popularity and do nothing to achieve balance.
I told you months ago (modns.org, just the time when you joined cheeserm) about balance issues and that YOU have to balance it, at least deliver a basic balance.

There are so many released and modif. versions that some admins for sure got confused, if they haven't much time or motivation to manage their server and ns-knowledge each day.

I really like that everyone can adjust the plugin's numbers, but they still can when the numbers are balanced at default
And then maybe there will be less "OMG UNBALANCED"-posts

Oh..and to everyone that complains about overpowered aliens, you just have to get familar with the new upgrades.

One good marine rushing static field helps a lot vs higher lifeforms because they loose much health before they even can close the gap. But then you have to leave the usual sg+jp upgrade-path, ...omg how can that work ??ß

Again, this is in the sma, and if a server op installs this plugin without reading the sma first and then setting it up properly, then the players on said server will suffer. This is how the masses wanted it configured, and this is how it's set up.

QUOTE

* REMEMBER: IF YOU DONT LIKE SOMETHING, CHANGE IT!!!! This is a very complicated plugin. Older versions didn't even offer cvars and the server ops were stuck with whay they got, short of modifying the sma. If the operators are purposely unbalancing the mod your beef is with them.

Again, not every admin will change the plugin.
This is really a bad excuse.
Should the ns-dev team release the new version with jp+ha combo, cheaper lifeforms, etc.
and give their responsibility for balance to the server admins ?
I dont think so and it won't help the games' reputation.

I really don' care that much, it isn't even worth this discussion because I know servers with well configured extralvls2-plugin, but I don't want you to get me wrong.

This is your (and cheeserms) plugin, you are responsible for its balance, fun, disposability, etc.
If you are ok with the state of balance because the masses want it that way, then it's ok for me,
but please stop telling people in here, who complain about the balance, how to change the plug-in,
because they just played it on random servers which weren't well configured in some cases.
Consequently your appeal won't help at all except protecting you from all blame and criticism caused by the plugin's issues.

Leaving the balance of the game to server admins is like trusting the local bum population to calculate the exit trajectory of a space shuttle.

It ain't gonna happen, folks.

The bottom line is that the marine team depends on all marines getting upgrades in NS, but aliens concentrate their power in a few powerful lifeforms. In combat, and ESPECIALLY in extralevels, the entire alien team can get these overpowered lifeforms, and with so many levels, they just run away with the game.

A permacharge onos is unkillable, and you can't tell me that that is a 'fun game'.

Furthermore, it destroys the whole point of Co as a trainer for NS. It's not much like NS as it is, but extralevels shatters any coherence whatsoever.

'Freedom of Choice' is not applicable, because I've found that half of the time people don't even know what they want. The average player can't understand why the fancy plugin they're playing results in aliens always winning.

Instead they go 'ooh shiney upgrades I like this plugin!' And game balance flushes down the drain.

Again, if you don't understand the complexity of this plugin, you shouldn't be arguing to change it. I'm willing to guess that on the servers that use this and it's terribly unbalanced, they have in fact adjusted the cvars to suit their own preferences, to hell with unbalance.

When the users asked for cvars to make this adjustable, we gave them that. With that ability comes the possibility of abuse and unbalancing.

I have no idea what Cheeserm has the default values set at now, but if you disagree with them, tell him so in the appropriate forum.

Do the server ops not set everything that's in the server.cfg? Of course they do, because they have to. They have a responsibility to. Likewise they are responsible for any/all other settings regarding their server.

normally i'm against plug-ins that change the original vision of the makers but there are some things about NS (even though it's my favourite game) that are extremely annoying so i welcome certain changes and i think they should become official somewhat.

extralevels results in unkillable aliens.

Every game.

I don't know about anyone else, but getting killed in your spawn over and over by a Ferrari Onos isn't exactly my idea of fun.

Depot, the vast majority of people have no idea how to balance the game.

Since virtually every co extralevels server has NOT modified the plugin, I already know that I am correct in this matter. Arguing it is rather pointless.
• DepotDepot The ModFather Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7956Members
To clarify: Upon downloading Cheeserm's AMX Mod X version from modNS.org I have discovered he has NO max level caps on any of the upgrades, and Cybernetics costs only 1 point.

The same version but with MY defaults set, available on Mods Maps and Models Forum here has a 5 level cap on all upgrades and charges 2 points for Cybernetics. These 2 changes (in the default setting alone) drastically nerf the plugin.

If you'd like Cheeserm to modify his default settings I suggest you skip on over to modNS.org and visit the extralevels2 thread and let him know.

Nerfing cybernetics doesn't exactly stop the Ferrari Onoses.

In a plugin that makes aliens supremely overpowered, you nerf a marine ability?

Heh.

Cybernetics abuse has been much more prevalent than any particular alien upgrade, simply because a marine coudl zoom on by a celerity skulk or blinking fade.

If cybernetics makes you faster than blink, than that's just another reason this plugin needs to be taken back to the drawing board.

Any 'extralevels' plugin needs to give MINOR bonuses that are mainly worth getting after you get the regular stuff.

As it stands, this plugin provides OVERPOWERING bonuses.

Capping fixes nothing. 1 level of 'blood lust' results in Ferrari Onos. Cap everything else, the aliens will Onos all over the marines.

The plugin has ridiculously serious flaws.

For example, an armor increase for aliens, but no damage increases for marines? There's no counter to armor increase+onos charge. At all.
