fixed my r_speeds right up
I was having some trouble getting r_speeds down in ns_shiva. There were several rooms in which every brush was split along some invisible plane that didn't seem to have any relation to the world geometry. This was pushing my r_speeds into the thousands in some places. I ran bsp with max node size set to 2048 (half of the default) and it fixed the issues immediately.

Just a heads up, if your r_speeds are getting out of control, and you notice that your brushes are getting split in places that they don't need to be, give it a try.

Edit:It also dropped my clipnodes 4%!!

Just beware that it usually also decreases vis efficiency, so make sure to check every area of your map and not just the trouble spot from before using maxnodesize. Good use of HINT brushes should be able to fix this drawback.
