I saw weird dream (I have a fever so dreams are very weird now) where I saw dead onos blocking a door and marines just keep shooting it. This just reminds me, that does bodies in HL2 block bullets etc? If yes, so can dead onos be a big meat shield then? And could that body block door so well that no marines or aliens can go there, except when body will vanish.

    Hey look, it's a thread about NS:S asking a question that hasn't been asked 100 times before! Thank the Gods! <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I have no idea how dead onos bodies would affect movement and bullet impacts, but if we <i>could</i> use them as meatshields, that'd be incredibly funny, if not a little annoying.

    Well isn't there a command that allows for the body to disappear after a couple of seconds, instead of the usual 600 seconds ? But, just curious if the server puts it to a default for everyone because... it would be kind of weird say if someone onthe team set it for the body to disappear after 10 seconds, and another person 30 seconds, would that mean that the guy would see the other guy walk through the onos, and the other guy just seeing the guy not be able to pass that point? Wait, nevermind i'm feeling ill right now also, don't mind me sorry :S

    Some people work on implementing Ragdoll into the HL1 Engine <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    Its not needed in NS and because of higher pings I wont like it.

    Would a Heap of dead corpses make mine ladders obsolent <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    where the bodies fall is client side, so they are different for everyone so you couldn't do this

    i thought there was away to allow ragdoll in hl2 to be server side, or maybe thats just the blood splatter on the walls

    Server-side ragdolls would be <b>so</b> memory-intensive... keep it client side, and let the bodies decay after ~10 seconds or so.

    Imagine skulks ragdolling like headcrabs when they die! <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Yeah, nanites clean the weapons out, why won't they clean the bodies out as well? (or bacteria stuff)

    I think onos deaths should be server side and should be temporarily blocking.

    Of course, you could push them away (stronger creatures pushing harder).

    Would add a nice aspect to the game.

    Or NS:S could just be set all in a "simulation" so the dev team can have an excuse to make an onos body evaporate.

    aww i would so like ns to be the most real game ever.Like if a dead skulks flys thrugh the air you could still die by the skulks leg piercing thrugh you or get wounded.And fellow marines would have to pull the skulk out of ya and you would be carried to home base where nanobots heal you on a tabel.

    and skulks could bite your gun off you and take it away <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> or bite your legs off and watch you suffer, or lerks could lift you on a onos horn and go to marine base,noone would shoot.

    heh Ive always wondered just how the humans get rid of all those dead oni bodies lying around at the end of a battle.

    What a mess.

    right... and since you can only take half a mag out of the armory at a time, you should have to sit there and merge the individual bullets into a single magazine before you get a full one.

    Scrap, those ideas are really... not good.

    Dev team doesn't need excuses as to why bodies disappear -- they already disappear, with no excuses made.

    Anyway, I think it'd be cool to have corpses stay for a bit... I don't think it'd cool to have them block.

    i beleve in CS:S, bullets go through bodies, without slowing down, because ragdolls are client side, unfortuneatly, you can walk through that big hunk of flesh...
  • SandstormSandstorm Join Date: 2003-09-25 Member: 21205Members
    As far as dead bodies go, it looks far more "professional" if some sort of effect occurs when bodies disappear. For example, Alien bodies can decompose into a cloud of bacterium and vanish, though perhaps leaving behind infestation. Marine bodies can simply be teleported off somewhere.

    The reason the Onos ragdoll should be server-side is because client-side ragdolls give players who disable them a competitive advantage, especially with such a large one as the Onos. An Onos corpse should be very rare anyhow, and it should disappear fairly quickly, so anything trapped in the stomach can escape.

    Currently, in many HL2 mods already out, and HL2 I believe, bodies fade out and the entities are deleted, making less of a payload on the server.

    Personally, I think Sandstorm has it right. With all the ways the HL engine was bent, the HL2 engine could probably easily be bent so that a different effect besides a fading effect occured at death. Most likely, there will be no use for chainsaws..

    ..even though it'd be nice and fun to cut up Oni into pieces and have roasted garlic Onos. Yumm <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I like the idea of a barbecue, but I'm not one to eat grilled Onos. You know, that stuff is all fat and bacteria, I can only imagine what it'll do to my intestines and heart...

    I dont remeber where but i read that the bodies and left weps are transformed back to nanites and go out thru res nodes. Well thats an explanation <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    It would probably work exactly like it does in HL2 currently. small ragdolls, such as human npcs, antlions, headcrabs, etc they have the 'debris' flag so players do not collide with them. These bodies have no effect on gameplay and are client side.

    In HL2, the big bodies, such as an Antlion Guard or a strider do collide with the player after they die. As a rule of thumb, any corpse laying on the ground that is below waist level should be debris to simulate the player stepping over it, (even if you are actually walking through it) Bigger things, you have to go around them. In NS, this would only apply to the Onos ragdoll.

    I can think of a few ways to make the Onos ragdoll simpler for the server to handle. It only needs to control the position of the center mass so The limbs would be calculated client side.

    Agreed, I would rather see the server side resourses devoted to more active in game scenarios then onos corpses.

    Ailen bodies could decompose into bacteria, in a sense, "melt" and Rines could teleport when they land on the ground.

    That being said.... It would look <b>AWESOME</b> to have server side ragdolls and having ragdoll collision turned on... Sure it'd kill any server, and cause the clients to run at 10fps in combat...

    But could you imagine marines an 8 foot wall of various alien bodies just piling up higher and higher? Those of you who have been crazy enough to manually turn on ragdoll collision right before playing the HL2: Antlion troopers map will know what I talking about... And will know how bind bogglingly impressive it looks, even at 10fps...

    Aliens would decompose at a speeded rate into a bacterium pile which would seep into the ground, the primary texture being bacteria organic <span style='color:green'>green</span>/<span style='color:orange'>orange</span>. (Since aliens are more fleshy)
    Marines would do the <span style='color:orange'>Doom3</span> thing, and incenerate into thin air. (But have it a <span style='color:blue'>blue burn</span> color instead of a <span style='color:red'>red</span> color like doom.) HL2 also does it with the orbs from the secondary shot on the pulse rifle.
