Invincible Marine Base

I just had a lot of fun on a server as commander at first, then just a marine (I got bored being commander). We started out pretty well and took an alien base, then we started taking out a second but then lost the 1st one we took. Anyway, we started losing so as commander, I was bound to make sure my marines survived, and I started building up base defense... a lot. In the first picture the right door isn't built up as much as it used to be, it had just been attacked by several onoses, but you can see in the second picture where it got built up again. This game went on until the admin finally changed maps, some 2hrs or so, grumbling about "entity buildup". I would just hand out heavy armor and nade launchers whenever we got enough money, and by welding things whenever they got hurt we managed to make the base pretty much invincible. One time they got frustrated and rushed with like 6 onoses, and all of them died in like 30 seconds. It was pretty funny. We got every upgrade you can get and just had fun playing around with all the toys. It isn't often that you get to sit back and whoop up on onoses, and I think all the marines had fun with it. Here is the run down on the base:

-All marine upgrades
-2 com centers
-2 turrent factories, one surrounded by a sea of turrents, the other more of a decoy than anything else (it only supported 4 turrents by itself)
-about 11 turrents crammed up against each door, and more scattered around the base
-armory strategically placed so that nade launchers can just sit there and fire at each door and reload without moving.
-4 siege turrents, two on each side.
-as much welders, heavy armor, and nade launchers we could afford at our slow resource rate.

The wall of turrents surve two purposes, they block spores for the most part, and they also slow down onoses and get them kind of stuck.

Anyway, it was tons of funs for marines, but I am sure it was frustrating for aliens. I don't think this will be possible much longer. If they made the resources limited, and/or made bile bombs work against structures it wouldn't be possible. Also, if they had lerks spamming the doors with spores (they go through to an extent) it would make it hard to repair the turrents... and that might allow the aliens to wear the turrents down. But with nade launchers that would still be hard to do. Anyway it was fun. It is actually an easy outcome to acquire. All you have to do is get a hive and hold it and some resources long enough to upgrade and build up your base. Then let the hive fall and you are set. As frustrating as marines can be (aliens ARE more powerful... especially on certain maps) it is kind of nice to see frustrated aliens every now and then.

Once bile bomb is repaired, Fades will make short work of this base.

If xenocide was working properly those turrets would be dead after 4 suicide attacks. ALL of them. Xenocide deals 800 dammange to buildings within it's radius (with less dammange the farther out you go). So since turrets have 2100 dammage all you'd need is 4 skulks go in there and xenocide and boom! All turrets right near the door are gone, the rest have massive dammage and it only takes 1 more xeno to finish them off. Also any marine near the blast incurs 400 dammage.

Bile bomb would have helped here as well.

Unfortunatly, both are bugged, and not working correctly.

edit: damn you and your short replies coil! you beat me!

Wow. I'm sure the aliens had sooooo much fun taking back the secured hive, and then fending you off the second, only to find a base full of turrets. Way to make the game un-fun. Way to go.

    agreed.

this is an example of why turrets need to be limited on the marine side as well

MAn turrets don't need to be limited, once bile bomb is up and running turrret farms won't do jack all.

k bile bomb vs 50 turrets.

    ...

so scary i think i just farted

well if turrets wont be limited then limit it to 8 turrets per factory... yes that would be seksi

pft. I agree with limiting it to 8 turrets per factory, but Bile bomb would still be deadly.

I agree, I'm sure ONCE bile bomb is fixed that such defenses like that will be utterly pathetic.

What are we supposed to do until then? Put up with the UN-funness of it all?

I was on that server and I just quit after seeing that. I knew it was going to take HOURS to finally get through that plantation of turrets.

The bile bomb and xenocide have to be fixed soon! However if it was that easy it'd be fixed by now.

So as an alternative: limited the marine turrets might be a wise idea to prevent games that are so lame that you just quit instead of play.

Heh i was playing a gorge on that map and the aliens were having much fun. It took at least 45 minutes to get though there. You can still take that out with teamwork.... First of all make onos use charge, it takes a turret out in a second or something. And dont tell me charge doesnt harm buildings because it does, just duck while running into them. And use a lerk to umbra the onos as he takes out that tower wall in front of the door. With 1 resource node they wont be replacing many of those turrets. Untill bile bomb and xeno are fixed it requires a little more teamwork, which is sadly enough, often not there. I think half the people dont even know what umbra does, because I still see marines standing still with HMG shooting my lerk from long range (or at short range for that matter, just at long range I prolly wont even get hit by 1 bullet =p) when I'm in umbra and then they get spiked to death and you get a WTF. And when I umbra for fades attacking a base, they're still scared as hell of those bullets while I, as lerk, can happily stand there. =p

Let's say you have pneumonia, which is giving you a runny nose. The runny nose kinda sucks, but it's not life-threatening or anything. The pneumonia, if untreated, will eventually kill you (it's a nasty strain).

A wise old man approaches you with something in each hand, and says you make take ONE thing. You look, and see
-in his left hand, a box of tissues for your nose.
-in his right hand, a prescription for some antibiotics which you will have to fill at the drug store.

Now, do you take the tissues for immediate, minor relief, or do you take the prescription, fill it, and accept the runny nose while the meds do their job and cure you, thus curing your runny nose?

    A) Bile bombs and Xenocide don't work right now. That is the pneumonia.
    B) Turret farming/turtling is a successful and frustrating marine tactic. That is the runny nose.
    C) Limiting turrets per factory will solve B. That's the box of tissues.
    D) Fixing the Bile bomb and Xenocide will solve A *and* B. That's the antibiotics.

It may take a little time, but it'll take longer if you ask for a box of tissues first. The only thing I worry about is that marines are seriously going to have to learn some new tactics once all the alien abilities work correctly. It also may be that both fixes require a client-side patch, and the wait time will be the same, regardless. So why not wait for the *complete* cure?

.. What's really sad is that was a really good explanation.
  • BridgerBridger Join Date: 2002-10-30 Member: 1761Members
at the same time that should also fix the marine's seige and grenades don't forget, so it's not like the marines will be suddenly overcome by a new alien ability. The building destroyers for both teams are broken, which causes very long end games where you have to finish the other's fortified base off with conventional weapons.

I played a similar game, we as aliens beat the marines right back to there base, just to encounter masses of turrets in a similar position as the screenshot shows on eclipse. We decided to cash in on the situation and all went lerk and spammed Spores, killing the marines basically instantly on spawn. After a half an hour of this they all went to the ready room to surrender

    Except why not take both?

If bilebomb, xenocide, and all that was so easy to fix it'd be out by now, right?

That means there's a trouble they can't figure out and even when it is figured out they'll have to code it right. This may take a while. Two patches have come out and two more might come out before it's finally fixed. Maybe more.

So why not give the poor **obscenity** the box of tissues and the prescription?

So when the drugs finally come in and fix the problem he doesn't need the box of tissues anymore.

However Coil if you're right and both fixes require client side patches then it's not worth the bother, it's not a common irritance.

Aliens should have had a couple of lerks constantly pour in spore clouds - even better, setting up an umbra at the door and allowing an ohno to charge in, knock out a SG and retreat. Then just rinse and repeat. Marines would be dropping like flies to the spore clouds and would be losing their precious equipment or burning precious RPs for medpacks. This ideally coupled with a few of fades constantly shooting in acid rockets to add to structure damage and splash damage. But again, bilebomb (once fixed) will wipe out rows of SGs relatively quickly.

I really don't understand such cowardly tactics as this turret farming. Must be my luck, or the general crowd I play with, I hardly ever see this. The marines will never win, and if the aliens are patient enough, they will win.

Very very nice post! Pin it up as a reply to the board rules, maybe people take a hint at the kind of writing we'd like to see more of ^^

In the meantime, I find turret farming to be a somewhat amusing tactic--even with the buggy xenocide and bile bomb, turret farms can still be beaten...the effort required is horrendous, though \"\(>.<)/"/
