reserved slots = the devil
If your gonna reserve slots on you server please add it to the title,

UBER NS SERVER 2 Reserved!

That way we dont have to go through 10 servers that have 2-4 slots reserved trying to get into a game.

All Seeing Eye detects reserved slots as well and its a much better game browser than gamespy or any of that crap www.udpsoft.com/eye

Actually, ASE doesn't always detect reserved spots. I'm not quite sure why, but it angers me

What's the deal with the "not my problem" posts? If you're a server operator and you reserve some slots, be nice and stick "2res" or "4res" in the hostname. This is the server operators forum.

I run a 16 player server, of wich 2 are reserved.
But I set the server to only report 14 Slots.
So if you'r using HL Ingame browser you will only see a 14 Player maximum.

BUT ASE and maybe other browser doesnt obey this so they report a 16 player server.

Therefore, use HL ingame if you don't whant to get in to full servers.

as a player I feel your pain.. it's a little frustrating trying to get you and your friends in a servers that reports 15/20 players yet you cannot get in because there are so many reserved slots.

as a server admin I like reserving slots (cant right now with adminmod and w2k) because I really don't want to kick players on my server to make room for myself or a clan member. I just will not do it because I hate when it'd done to me.

reserving slots is one of the perks of being a server admin. It would help if server admins put the amount of reserved players in the hostname but if you look carefully even in gamespy3d you can see in the server details how many slots are reserved. If that doesn't work for you try a different program like someone already suggested ASE.

If ALL server admins put Res2 that might mean something to people but right now, nobody would know what that stands for.

I run a 24player server, but hl in game browser only sees 16 which is the number of public slots so if you use the ingame there is no problem.

I agree, what is it with these "not my problem" posts. Supposedly you're running a public server to be used, right? Then something which is causing the public problems is your problem. If you don't like it, don't run a public server.

Use the ingame server listing? Why? Who says I'm going to play NS next game. I have a multi-game server browser for a reason, I play multiple games.

All it is is a 10 second change to your server.cfg file. Personally mine reads as follows "dmiyu.org Natural Selection 6 on 6 v1.02 (1 rsvd slot)". That way people can read one line and know the following:

1: Name of the server
2: The max team sizes the server can accomodate.
3: The version of the server
4: The number of reserved slots.

With that information if they see 12/13 on the players column chances are they can figure out it is full without further digging.

Anyone who cannot take the moment's effort to effect a small change in their server title is a little too full of themselves.

OK, I think this is a pointless argument to have even started, as there are som many different points of view can can be flung around.

Here is the way I think about it.

First, when you see an ODD number or slots, you logically know that one is reserved, and the server has reserve_type 1. [in AM's case]

Second, the fact is that a lot of ppl, including myself use an alternate server browser. [In my case ASE], and when I see a server I like, I go look at the server variables BEFORE i join. That's all the info you need right there.... you'll see the number of reserved slots and everything.

The info is alredy there at your disposal, so I don't understand the problem. If an Op secides not to put it in the title, so be it. You're waisting what, a couple of mouse clicks and about 10 seconds? heh... I usually take the time to stretch my lazy body

You're missing the point of scale. Each server op has to do it only once for their server configuration.

Every player has to check server variables at least once, maybe more, for every server that shows up in the list. It can be more than once esp. if the server is in flux as many are.

The information you need to drill for should be parsed automatically by the server browsers. That I grant. But to say that the end user should drill down for it on every server every time when there is a much more convenient way that takes minimal effort on the part of the one who presumably desires people to utilize his server is rather presumptious and borders on rude. "My time is more important than NSPlayers*NSservers time." Uh, no, sorry, fire up vi for 10 seconds and just do it.
• CayCay Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8329Members
not to mention not all OOG browsers show that info, or that all the players know what to look for if thier not server admins themselves.

Firstly, I never stated in my post as to whether I think server ops should put it in or not. My PERSONAL opinion on whether or not it should be in the title was not stated, and I did not state it because there is no point in it being stated.

Did I tell everyone to go and scroll through the server variables? Read my post again.

NO, I didn't. Why? Because like you said, people won't do it. I told you what I DO so that I don't try to join a server only to get a reserved slot message. I never said

"Why don't you players go and do it."

I, my friend, have not been "presumptuous or rude" in any way, shape or form. I told you what I do, and why I think this is a pointless debate.

Cheers!

I used to run 2 reserved slots on my server, but I really felt sorry for the players trying to connect and getting that generic message all the time.

Thus, I don't use reserved slots anymore.
• MellonpoprMellonpopr Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2304Members
ok, I'm beginning to agree.. putting (2 reserved slots) in the hostname doesn't hurt anything and helps players so why not do it ?

once admin mod is fixed for 1.03 and win2k I'll do it mmkay ?
