American Dad

<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone else watch the pilot?</div>On last Sunday Cartoon Network had a pilot for a new show called <a href='http://www.fox.com/americandad/episodes/index.htm' target='_blank'>American Dad</a>, which is from the makers of Family Guy.

It's a lot like Family Guy if it had centered around Joe, except he worked at the CIA instead of being a cop. And wasn't handicapped.
The wife is complete generic and devoid of personality, and only has one funny line in the episode. A lot like how Lisa Simpson was in the first season of the Simpsons.
The daughter is a college aged gothy Meg clone,
The son is like that one geeky guy who had a crush on Meg
The role of Stewey and Brian have merged into a space alien that lives in their attic
The role of "drunken / wants to hump Lois Brian" is played by a fish with a german skiir's mind.

Comedy is random funny just as in Family Guy, though there's a lot of poking fun at the current political climate.

I'd rather have new Family Guy episodes, but this is a good substitute till those are done.

Anyone else see it?

    Yeah, though I missed it when it aired (thank God for <span style='color:orange'>*snip*</span>). I have to disagree, as much as I like family guy I think this has realy potential too. I'm sure it will only get better as time goes on.

    Anyway, favorite quote time:
    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->You can read! The system works! I'll be back for my stuff<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    And of course the whole bit with Bush and God.

    I remember watching a pilot for it ages ago, dunno if it's the same one.

    I also remember thinking it was too much like Family Guy for it's own good. I mean, more Family Guy can't possibly be a bad thing, but it seemed more at home in one of those weird flashback things that Family Guy does than it's own series. Basically I didn't think it'd be able to make it as it's own series without essentially turning into a Family Guy clone (and i'd prefere to see more Family Guy than a knock off of it). Hope I was wrong.

    I have no idea what Seth was thinking, this is the most wishy washy cartoon I've ever seen and if it survives its only because it preys on the current division the nation faces. The only character that isn't completely useless is the german goldfish and even he isn't that great.

    Weak characters, weak jokes, and an overdone plot make for a crappy cartoon. I know this seems harsh but treasures like Family Guy shouldn't be tarnished by a loaf of half-way points of "arguments" as american dad is. I like how it attacks the mindless nationalism we currently exhibit but the show overall wasn't very good.

    I see where he is coming from on this and though it scares me, I am tempted to feel the same way on some of the issues.

    I watched this show together with some friends on an IRC channel that I run, one of the members peer-broadcasted it and we all watched the broadcast and talked about it during the commercials.

    My thoughts on the show are varied but one part of me felt this way;

    Have we, Americans, fallen so low that the shows we choose to be entertained by have to play the predator towards all our choices as a nation. I know these days most everyone seems disillusioned with America, a sort of counter to the haydays of over-zealous patriotism that we had before, yet it seems over critical to attack the system of government for a few crude laughs. I agree, to have a truly effective system we have to have the ability to question it and and the choices of those who lead the system. But this just seems like an attempt to derive humour from popular ignorance. No I'm not going to go Marine01 on everyone and start berating people who hate Bush or think Iraq was only about oil, but this show was too radical and only as a gimmick at that.

    Should I lie and say I didn't laugh? No of course not. I laughed, but too much of the humour was alien to me even if it gave me a chucke or two.

    The joke about bringing a dead dog to your professor would of been pretty funny if he had fallowed it through. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Well I'd describe this with the Simpsons-Futurama relationship. IMO, Simpsons was mildly funny, and then they make Futurama and it's much better than the Simpsons. This is pretty much the opposite: Family Guy is great, and then they make American Dad which is just bad.

    My main problem with American Dad is that it's just too far out there. I mean, an alien from Area 51 who's addicted to junk food? A horny German skier's mind transplanted into a <i>goldfish</i>? It made me laugh, but in more of a WTH way than anything else sometimes. It also seemed to move really, really fast plotwise, but that was probably just because it was the pilot.

    It's not as good as Family Guy.

    It gave me a few chuckles, and it wasn't that bad really, but it just wasn't anywhere as near as funny as Family Guy is.

    I saw it and didn't enjoy it enough as I had initially thought I would. In fact I'm like you in that I would have prefered to have new episodes of Family Guy. Why mess with the formula?

    Now I like how American Dad is more timely and I can understand a rehash by Seth MacFarlane would attract a new audience, but I found the Pilot to be too erratic for my taste. I'll definately stay tuned to the series to see how the character dynamics change and mature.

    I thought the voice acting didn't properly match the characters. They were all a bit too whiney. Like they were all poorly cast like Meg in Family Guy. Goldfish is fairly good, but everything else was fairly predictable in the "You know it's going to be inane and stupid" sort of way. Still funny in parts, could be good once it gets on its feet (Futurama's Pilot, while funny, is poorly done compared to later episodes (almost no music, different voices).

    Just gotta get around to May 1st (...or something like that) for new Family Guy episodes...

    I'll re-iterate my point that this is just the pilot...

    Its bound to get better.

    Look at the pilot of Family Guy, it was quite generic and not nearly as funny as once they got into it. And the Aqua Teen Hunger Force pilot wasn't funny at all, but it got a whole lot better.

    Hopefully this will blossom in the same way...
  • Cold_NiTeCold_NiTe Join Date: 2003-09-15 Member: 20875Members
    Yeah, Aqua Teen Hunger force just evolved spectacularly. I'll be open minded and give it a chance. Hopefully next time the plot won't be on crack.
