I did post these pictures a while back.. however I shall repost them.

My current summer vechile: '95 Talon Esi (TSi converted) :-) I was planning on selling it, however no one wanted to pay for the modifications that have been done to it. Silly South Dakotans.

    <img src='http://www.applepics.com/userfiles/p809_raefnaltow2188.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    Modifications:

    Engine Internals:
Removed the 420A Chrysler engine, and swapped with a 2nd gen eclipse GSX engine (Needed to add one extra mounting point. Only had 4 not five hehe)
Removed 2nd gen turbo.. replaced with 16B (From stock 1st gen eclipse GS( '90 was the year of the car))
Installed custom 3.5 inch cold air intake (Home depot for air intake pwnage.)
Instaleld Kool Blue Air filter on to intake. :-) (K &N Pwns, but this does the same thing, except its blue)
    Reforged pistions and rods.
Lowered compression rationi from 9.5:1 to 8.75:1 (Accomidate for turbo)
Installed Spitfire Platnium spark plugs and Holley Annihilator 11mm spark plug wires. (She was stuttering after intalling new intake.)
Installed new ECU (Comptuer) from 2nd generation Talon ( '96 )
Installed new transmission from an automatic Eclipse GSX 2nd gen ( '99)
Installed Greddy blowoff valve ( GRE11531010 model for greddy eclipse/talon kit)
Installed Apex-i Super AFC (Controls boost and air/fuel mixture in addition to shift points)
Installed new set of DSM fuel injectors 650's.
Installed new fuel pump (taken from a '95 twin turbo Dodge stealth RT/10)
    Installed Tial 38mm waste gate.
    Installed HKS Full-Cat back exhaust. 3 1/2 inch pipes of course. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Cleaned out Cat and am running currently 3 inch piping through it. shhh <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I also have an A-Arm 3 pod on the drivers side, which hold my Autometer Turbo pressure guage, electronic Air/Fuel ratio guage, and exhaust temp guage.
( I think that is everything.)

    Exterior.
    Audi Blue exterior paint.
    Sky fox protective bra.
Eagle F1 chrome rims.. (Yes.. I like them for looks even if they weigh 10x more then aluminium rims).
    Four Yokohama’s Parada Spec-2 tires.

    Interior (not engine related)
Two Bose tweeters in the front dash.
Two Clarion titianium 6 1/2 speakers in front doors.

Lanfear, I thought Talon TSi were turbo at stock... 4g63t, not the 420A. Unless that was first-gen only. Then again, most of the first-gen TSi were also AWD... only a small percentage were FF. To recollection, it was the straight Talon that used the 420A, like the Eclipse GS.

And I was planning to buy a car very similar to the one you've got, except a 1G Eclipse GSX. Handling was INCREDIBLY tight, the ACT 2600 seemed misadjusted (was around a 60lb leg-press to clutch-in, but I've never driven a car that used one), only a 3" downpipe with a cat-back, Big 16g swap, cold air, A`PEXi SAFC II and so on... black, near-impeccable paint, pop headlights that I was planning to replace with projectors, and fix the aero with some carbon-fiber blackouts. Also dropped two inches on sport coils.
The bits that kept me from picking it up... no first gear (he'd rebuilt the tranny and put in stiff-shift bushings... incorrectly, which kept first from engaging), no seat belts (tore out the stock seats and put in R1 racing, but never followed through with a harness of any kind), no smog, registration lapsed for almost a year, and the speedometer (and assumedly odometer) had been disconnected and never reconnected after the tranny swap. And the new turbo was leaking oil, as he was an idiot and didn't put hose clamps on the feed and returns. He'd also pulled his boost timer and 'loaned' it to a friend, which was not to be included with the car.
Oh, and he wouldn't pay to get it smogged.

Plus, it scared the living hell out of me, honestly. Trying to control a perf-tuned car that's 150% as long as the one you're used to, with a different powertrain, tuned steering, and no first gear.. on a city street lined with parked cars. Then trying to goose it to make sure the turbo was actually spooling, and that the bearing weren't frozen thanks to his stupidity with the oil.
Though if it had been closer to home, I would probably have bought it anyway.. the biggest stopping point was that it was 350 miles from Burbank, and I'd have to drive it back, after dealing with smog and such. Pre-repairs. :b

I'm still trying to convince myself that I made a good decision, and that I'd have rolled it on the way home. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Actually Talesin.. the talon was an ESi to start with and I converted to an Tsi with FWD, cause I didn't want to pay the 8000 to do an AWD conversion. I also would have lost about sixty more horsepower to the crank. We can't have that now can we? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Er... a fully custom-designed and built AWD racing tranny out here will run about $6K, milled, assembled and installed. After I get the engine/tranny swap done on the Mirage, that's what I'll be saving my winnings toward, if I actually start making money. AWD would (hopefully) eliminate traction problems entirely... which will be my biggest issue; followed somewhat distantly by body rigidity. If not, at least a four-wheel burnout with radial racing slicks would be impressive as all hell.

You don't lose that much HP with an AWD, unless it's a badly-done convert, or you're also switching to an automatic at the same time. I'd believe 10, maybe 20 at most. The part that really can bring down performance is the extra 200 pounds of metal for the driveshaft, rear axle (instead of stubs), and transfer case. And that's all power-weight, which can easily be solved the old fashioned way. Adding more horses and torque!

And obvious question. Why not just buy a TSi AWD, swap the engines and perf parts? You'd have better handling, grip drive more effectively, and be able to safely drive much faster in the rain. Also, if you're into canyon runs (which are FUN!) an AWD can save your life if you end up driving on marbles because the wind shifted and blew gravel onto the asphalt.
  • CyndaneCyndane Join Date: 2003-11-15 Member: 22913Members
Hehe... because the insurance on a TSi when I bought the car was literally 900 dollars more <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

In addition, when one lives in south dakota.. there aren't exactly a lot of caynons to run around in.

I was quoted a price of $8K with parts and labor for a AWD convert. In addition the 2nd generation DSMs are quite heavy as it is, hence the better handling in their AWD counterparts vs the 1st generation.

It was also the only car like it here at the time (color wise), considering I purchased the vechile in 96.. near the end of the year.

You, my friend, have no sense of style.

The ol' Mustang back from its originating days looked <i>beautiful</i>. The fact they are taking what made those beautiful and fusing them with the newer model is great. How you don't like that, I don't understand- I didn't at first either, but after getting a few good looks, I just love them- especially when I saw one on the road.

I'm going for a 1G engine and tranny.. it'll fit in the Mirage better. I'm a little hesitant now, as I just found out the '90 Plymouth Laser I was discussing buying was snatched out from under me. Now all I have realistically is a cheaper (by half) Eclipse GS-T, with reported clutch issues. Which might be as simple as needing to bleed the line.

But hell, it's going to be open anyway. Might as well pick up a lighter flywheel and an ACT 2600 while it's easy to replace them. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

So far I've got a buddy who used to build performance Mustangs (his crown jewel was a big block that pushed 1687 whp when the blower was on, that he had to weld on rebar wheelie-bars to keep from flipping, and would run a sub-7 quarter) who says he'll do the swap for $1K, plus parts. But that includes a full rebuild of the engine and tranny, while he has them sitting there, after removing them from the donor car. I have to buy him the lifts though ($50 ea for an engine hoist and tranny rack, ain't Sears wonderful). Thankfully after buying this GS-T, if I do, I'll have about $2K left. Slap on 500 for misc parts (might as well put on a better water pump, as well as fuel pump... not to mention repair the lower sway bar and bushings), and I have 500 for a custom exhaust to be bent, which it will need. No one *makes* 3" pipe for a Mirage, as it's such a specialty part.
Paycheck that should be coming in any day will cover rent and other bills.

Part that I'm really concerned about is how to report it to the DMV. Registering it as salvage sucks, with all the inspections it has to pass. Similar/same with registering it as a project car... given that all the parts that are going in (well, that would matter) are Mitsubishi, it should retain that manufacturer, rather than switching over to 'Custom'.

But if I do get it done, I'll just be enjoying the look on Cobra SVT drivers' faces... in my rearview. ^_^
Hell, I might even go for a Supertrap muffler, so it won't sound ricey like a cat-back tends to. Then again.. the annoying trumpet nose-blow only seems to really kick in on VTEC-powered cars. Most Mitsus actually have a pretty nice rumble-cough.

Quau, it looks like they took a classic Mustang and riced it... over half the car. They said 'screw it' on the other half. Park one next to a CLASSIC 'stang, and tell me the '05 doesn't look like utter crap.

I have to agree with Tal, not being an American I don't regularly get to see Mustangs but even I can see that the 05's are just yet another "conformising" of the car to make it look like every other damn vehicle on the road.

Look at the toyota MR2 every version looks less original than the previous.

    *shakes head in dismay*
