VU Games already started reproduction before release

Seven days before the official release on November 16th 2004, the shooter Half-Life 2 is already sold out according to Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games). The cause of that are a few hundredthousand preorders, which exceeded the initial expectations, said the publisher.

The second charge of Half-Life 2 is already in Production. "Many of our customers have raised their orders again during the last few days", says Thomas Mohlen, the sales manager of VU Games Germany. They try to cover all orders in time with the second charge.

Delivery shouldn't be a problem for those with broadband internet though, as Half-Life 2 developer Valve Software is planning to release the game at the same time online via Steam.

The prospect of digital delivery over Steam is sounding ever more appealing.

    that's pretty funny...

and makes me understand the people who prefer to buy in boxes even LESS.

if I never had to own another game CD and just owned the rights to them all digitally, my life would be that much better. you people honestly have room in your houses to keep game boxes for tens or hundreds of games you own? or you just like to look at the cardboard before you trash it? and need I remind you that, with few exceptions, game manuals are usually garbage written by people who know nothing about the game? and in the exceptions, you can usually still get the manual online? buy a book if you want to read the paper so badly.

let's see, keeping a CD, CD case, CD key, manual, and box, and having to find them all whenever I need to reinstall a game... or typing in my e-mail address and password and downloading everything anywhere, anytime... only valid reason I could see for preferring a hard copy would be if you have a 56k connection and it would take days to download something... in which case you should take your $50 for HL2 and spend them on broadband instead

I thought they stopped using card board for game boxes. Here (Britain) all the games come in DVD boxes.

    Same (Sweden).

Hell, even my Half-Life: Generations came in a DVD box...
Anyway, I just want the HL2 box so I can put it next to the HL one and be all happy... and stuff... and also I preordered before I knew about the Steam offers

All PC games in US still come in boxes. The boxes used to be of considerable size, but now they cut down the size by a good margin.

    *actually measures*

    7 1/2 x 5 1/4
Give or take a couple of centimeters lol.

Other than that, I wonder if the first batch of games has my preorder in it? I did preorder in April when people thought it was getting ready for release in a month or two. lol.

    ARGH!

How can they underestimate HL2... wow.

As much as I hate to, it looks like I might be using Steam now... Just gonna have to get a friend to download it off the campus wireless and use an external hard drive to swap the cache files around.

    WRONG.

ALL copies, including retail boxed copies, require Steam auth to unlock the installation files. Dont worry though, Valve own the rights to HL2, they will probably open source it before the company folds (at least 10 years from now).

Retail is just a Steam Cache in a box with a number key to tell steam you have payed for it. You dont even get a manual.

If having a hard copy worries you so much, download all the content and then burn that to dvd. Then you won't have to worry about not having the information.

    Ya beat me to it.

I want the hard copy that didn't depend on the internet connection or existance of steam too.

But Valve doesn't release such thing.

Internet connection is part of the minimum spec. Its an anti piracy measure, the fact that its single player isnt really a factor.

Think about it though, the cost of getting a dial up modem, phone line and ISP (100s of completely free dial up services) isnt much compared to the cost of a computer which can run HL2. Also, Steam has an offline mode so once the game is unlocked you no longer need an internet connection (until you reinstall).

Preordered mine at EB. All I can say is that it better not be another Doom 3 fiasco. Little story: Preordered Doom 3 at EB. Went to pick it up. They said they just sent a guy to go pick up the copies on the day of release, so I would have to wait later in the day. I then canceled my preorder and took Doom 3 home from Best Buy.

My roommate and Halo 2: OH NOs! I RESERVED MY COPY IN OLYMPIA!! They won't transfer it here! So I'm going to drive for 2 hours to stand in line at midnight then turn around and drive 2 hours to play it here. I heard it has 48 hours of gameplay, so my goal is to beat it in 24. ...(12 hours later)... I beat it! Halo 2 is the best game EVER!!!

Me and Half-Life 2: OH NOs! IT'S ALREADY ON MY HARD DRIVE! They won't let me play it till the 16th. Guess I'll sit here and play CS:S... Wheeeee! Ok, it's the 16th... refresh... refresh... refresh... refresh... refresh... refresh... refresh... refresh... hey, I can play now! Wheeeee!

So, take your boxes and uh... pet them. Or whatever you box people do with them. Yeah! And take your Halo 2 too!

I was debating between the box and steam.
I've also been debating whether to get it at all since my comp is a little behind the times.
    This clinched it.

    Steam it is.

I wonder if there are any statistics on how many copies of HL2 have been sold already. I wouldn't be surprized if it was the largest initial product dump before a release date ever, considering all the steam purchases, the double preorders and the single preorders.

I decide to do it retail, for the hard copy. And by that I mean the pressed hard copy; I don't want the burned CD-R with my HL2 to rot in three or four years' time.

    I wouldn't want a copy on CD-R myself.
    A dvd+r I have seemed more appropriate.
