<div class="IPBDescription">This is my first model</div> This is my first model (that I made to look good anyway). It's a rifle made in maya. I would get a better pic, but I can't buy the full version to get rid of the watermark and the renders are sort of pixelated. Edit: found better render thing.

What do you think?

    its ok for a first model use milkshape 3d <a href='http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/' target='_blank'>http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/</a>
    its free (for 30 days) and after that only 20/30 $ it is VERY compatible with HL engine games or rather Quake engine. heres something i made with it.

    Nice model, although the polygons more noticable in Milkshape. I never really thought of modelling for HL, but I might try. What's a good skinning program btw?

    for skinning you can use any paint program that supports layers.

    Gimp (free)
    Photoshop

    ...im sure there's more.

    for renders you can use the trial version of Cinema 4D. Just print screen and crop it down to the render point.

    Also try to make a bit of rounding if possible. Just too blocky looking

    well after 30 days you "just" get a new splash screen saying you should buy it now... but still works fine <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Nonono! Stop! Don't convert him! He shall use Maya!

    If you want to render your polygonal models in Maya, go to Polygons (or Edit Polygons) > Normals > Sharpen/Harden > Option Box. Then harden them as much as possible (full hard) and render. Then you have clearly defined lines.

    Good job for choosing the best modelling program that exists <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Thanks for the tips guys. I'm trying to make a better one now. Is it possible to export maya into milkshape btw (to make HL models)?
  • CondizzleCondizzle Join Date: 2004-10-05 Member: 32107Members
    My next one. It's sorta based off of the lmg model. I tried to round things out, but It's hard to do (for me, anyway). I think I lost the detail of the last one, but I attempted to add some color.

    Bulky = Usually ugly.

    That new one's pretty cool, looks like a BAR fused with an LMG.

    the reason smooth shaded looks like crap to you is because no one(the majority) properly smooths their models around here

    M1A4. I didn't try to make an exact copy, so don't say that it's not super realistic please.

    I think you need to spend a bit more time on your models, and working from concepts. :\

    Looking nice! Right now it looks like you're building mostly with primitives; you'll want to start building your models as one complete polygon mesh soon. That means starting out with a box or a cylinder and building your entire model from just that. I have a plugin to export from Maya to .obj format which Milkshape reads; I'm not sure if it will work on the Personal Learning Edition but you can try. PM me if you want it.

    Edit: And for curves, you'll probably want to hold off on those until you get comfortable modelling with polygons alone, because curves are a whole 'nother topic and you don't want to get mixed up.

    That last one actually was done from a picture (But it was an airsoft gun). The first 3 were just guns that I made as I thought of them. I probably could have added better details, but that was only my 4th model and I really don't know how to make a lot of those shapes. I 'invented' some details to fill in flat spaces. Here's the pic I used:
    <img src='http://img57.exs.cx/img57/1541/M4A1.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
    <img src='http://img57.exs.cx/img57/5674/M1A4Mpic.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    I just realized I forgot the trigger.

    kinda toonish looking that m4 and other well thing. add some cell shade and BAM

    They look toonish because they're not detailed and textured. Like I said, I don't know how to make some of those shapes.

    P.S. If you think THAT'S toonish, you should see my alien attempt <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

    Okay, I made a super sentry gun. Maybe I will use milkshape because texturing is too !@$!ing hard in Maya.
