i went out and purchased a duct used normally for dryer vents to adhere to the front of the cage...it has little flaps on it that will wave back and forth as air moves past it. I plan on having it be infront of the exhaust fan on the smoke machine

not only is it practicle but will add a ventilation feeling to the case

Looks realy interesting guys. Keep on working and post some final screenshots as soon as possible . Sorry guys i got a bit mixed up. I thought i'd seen this thread before several months ago (i was actually thinking of porchas' hamster mod) and when i looked at the post dates to check i actually looked at the registered dates rather than the date the post was made . Sorry about that.

you can use auto body filler to add some sort of rock texture to it. thats what i used on the mouse i made. it gives out a realy good texture and feels good. also when painting make sure to light brush the top parts to give it more depth. i think that would look good on the case.

got the fog machine cut out and installed to the case today, even got it working

the last pic is an example of the vent in the front of the case where a 120mm fan will blow out, im thinking of putting a T-junction in the piping from the fog machine so smoke blows out the vent and the res node. I used some plastic tubing to try to vent the spray out the top where I've cut a blowhole but the tip of the fog machine got so hot it melted through the plastic tube...looks like ill be switching to metal/mesh

edit: fog looks alot better in real life, the case looked mean when the smoke was pouring out from all over the case

Porcha, when you display that sucker on a convention, make sure theres a singn that tells people the smoke is intentional, otherwhise someone will come with a fire extinguisher

what you might want to do is use a clay mold for the hive makes it much sexxier and i had an idea for the aliens side, make wires dangle out from the side, and the marine side, see if you can have a panel to have lights blinking from a "computer"

    1) I would Refrain from putting 'pictures', like the marine with the pistol or whatever it is people want. They don't really make the theme, they take a lot of space, and it just doesn't 'feel' right. I personally think things like that cheapen the effect a lot. That's like painting a big 'natural selection' on it and calling it done. Doens't work.

    2) For the hive, buy latex mixtures and create your own hive using a mold, and that will give it a great 'fleshy' look, which I'm sure you were planning. The pulse LED sounds great, but be sure to use a reflector to stop it from having a 'bright spot' in it. Putting the led in there with a highly polished mirror cone around it will give it a good 'flood' effect inside the hive, so it won't be bright in a spot where you can see the LED.

    3) As for the side of the case, I would trim the window size down a bit. You really don't need anything that huge, and a trimmed down window could allow you to get away with a partial hive, if you were so inclined.

    4) I also think, as said, that you should use a tubing system to deliver the fog. This will not only free up some space, but make it easier to work with, and you can divert it and have the fog coming out other parts as needed. I for one think a great effect would be to have a tube connecting to a sealed shallow 'pan' with vents cut into the side. This pan could easilly be attached to the underside of the case (my case, for example, has large feet under it, and it could sit between them). Cases are usually pretty solid underneath (some weatherstripping around the edge where the side attaches would solve any concerns of leaks). When powered up, fog should leak through and give the case an impression of sitting in a bed of fog.

    4) Another great effect, which would be even cooler using piped fog: Buy a semilarge fan with VERY large blades (only a small space between blades), and try to dial it down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-10 RPM. Paint the blades matte black, and put a high intensity white LED behind it. Again, if you managed to rig up a plastic tubing system to pipe fog around, put just a tiny bit (You can buy adapters and tubing for this at an aquarium shop) in there to give the light a 'haze'. Box the entire fan and LED in a solid box and mount it at the back of the case. This should give a relatively eerie 'glow' effect with a slowly rotating bands of light. Without the fog, the effect will be diminished, but not destroyed.

    5) The marine side will be tough. This is the side with the motherboard so unless you 'expand' the sides, you don't have much room to work with add-ins (I was thinking that this could be a great spot for something like a temperature LCD monitor, but the mobo is i nthe way). I would basically do what they did with doom 3 - panels, electronics, etc. If you did 'expand' the case (like they did with the window on the side), I would make it a lot less... 'sticky out', and behind the plexiglass put blue and white LEDs (again, be careful to avoid 'intensity' from the LEDS, and try to get dim ones) and fill it with cables and wires. Alternatively, you could put a steel 'door' on it, put some caution stripes, and a handle you can pop it off with, then fill it with wires and such in there.

    6) Now, if you were so inclined to do this, a pretty nasty effect would be to cram a small pump in there and pipe around a viscous substance (What, I have no idea). Since this will be visible from the Kharra side, using latex, make an 'infestation mold' you can wrap on the tubes. I've seen people do it, but don't know how, but you can even backlight the tubing. Combined, this should give a good 'icky nasty' look, kinda like the tubes on the mutant in the Resident Evil movie. They got wierd green goo in the half-life 2 case, I'm sure you can devise something.

    Just some unique ideas.

we've attached a duct with a giant 120mm fan to the front of the case that blows open the vent and we've tested how it looks with smoke and wow...it looks awesome but again with the pictures, you cannot see the smoke too well....enjoy...i'll be priming the case in a few minutes here and once that dries i'll start applying the creep

i think that the vent is a little too big. i was thinking of a vent built-in to the case and have fog coming out of that. kinda like the vents in this picture on the front of the case, but have the vents pointing down instead of to the side

also, i found this neat blue light that gives a nice glow. might be good for the marine side
