here is a link to the animated hive gif, not gonna post it since it turned out to be 1.2mb, it'll give you an idea for what a hive might look like pulsing on the side of my case

this "hive pulse" idea would not replace a window btw

there clearly needs to be a CC somewhere on this. or maybe an obs, with a seperate speaker so you can "bacon"

maybe make the button the hive sight sprite from 1.04 (the sprite that identified each hive)

Red leds behind the fades eye to make it glow would be cool.

not a bad idea

ive talked to alot of people so far, someone suggested I keep the marine side on the side with the window and the other side have just half a hive and the "creep" cover it. I'll see how the sculpting of the hive goes, as well as painting it before I attempt to make anything as detailed as the eye or possible a fade/HA model. Another cool feature may be to make commander mode decals and apply them to the window so you get a commanders view inside the case. Keep the ideas coming, I'm going to get some polyuerethane foam spray tomorrow to begin work on some practice "creep" and possibly a practice hive. I also need to find a place that sells some cheap bondo.

Quick fourth on CWAG's idea.

This looks like it could be pretty sick. Especially with the resnode on top and the fog machine. That box is gonna be pretty cramped.

idea:

have a hole on the alien side like you suggested but possibly make it look like something barged through it like:

o sharp edges
o dents
o bulging outwards

and when you look through the hole you see part of the hive and a few ocs etc.

on the marine side have a clean window coloured blue. should also be able to see the hive but have it behind another blue window. a few marines here and there couldnt hurt too

i dunno if I want to try making like a mini figurine battle, nor do I want to just have high quality printouts of marines and aliens glued to the case, I'd rather just give the case a general feel of the player being immeresed in natural selection with just the hive and the creep around it, as well as maybe a taste of marine start and the commander mode
• FieariFieari Join Date: 2002-10-22 Member: 1566Members, Constellation
Another possible idea would be, instead of having the alien/marine sides split left and right, with the window being given to either aliens or mariens (but not both)... have the split be front and back, with both aliens and marines having a shot at the window. If not, I'd really love to see the aliens get a hold of the window: mostly because I think a partially infested window would look awesome. The window NEEDS a tendril going through it like a vine. This tendril shuld be constructed, not painted on.

That Doom3 casemod has something awesome going for it: the airlock on servos that actually has a function for the computer: the fan. Because this is what you are competing with, allow me to second the idea of incorperating the resource nozzle with your cooling system in some manner. I didn't understand exactly what the other guy was referring to, but surely there's something, right?

For the marine side, I STRONGLY suggest you keep it simple. The marine "feel" in game is that of sleekness, cleanliness, and simplicity. Don't let the others talk you into a diarama or anything like that. Pick a marine structure... like the command chair, or arms lab, and use that for inspiration. The arms lab has the advantage of having a monitor sticking off of it, which could have potential.

If you like the Front/Back (as opposed to left/right) idea, I'd reccomend you infest the front and have the back be sterile. Think about the potential of infesting your optical drive... that should help wow the croud. And the fade eye for a power button would go well there anyway.

For the inside: Why not make use of a staple of NS maps-- the ventillation duct! Use ducts to organize the wires, perhaps with grills here and there.

To the rest of the people in this thread: Any possibility we could have fewer idiots? Stupid comments are probably not helpful here.

very good idea. By dressing up the front with creep it would allow me to incorporate the fade eye start button as well as wow the crowd with the unique bay drives

i may possibly just leave out the entire marine theme'd side and just make it look very clean and "future metallic" since all fighting in NS takes place on what appears to be marine ground, it should be just alien creep ontop of marine metal.

hmm, you said you didn't want a "battlefield", but i'll throw this idea out anyway.

on the marine side of the case, maybe you could put up a ladder going to the top of the case. on the ladder, put 2 marines, with maybe one of them just coming over the top for the res node.

on making the marines, i'm not sure how you'd do that, but maybe you could paint up some old G.I. Joes, or maybe some people from a train model or something.

kinda thinking this would be on the side of the case, near either the front or the back, but that's your call.

ooo, you could also put 2 medpacks on the ground at the top of the ladder, that'd be cool.

Not sure how much room the case has from side to side, but here's one idea for some more of the marine side, though it seems like it'd be a bit much work. You could cut away part of the case, and make sort of a shelf, with part of it sticking inside the case, and part of it projecting out from the side of the case. this would of course have to be reinforced. On the shelf, you could then make a minature marine base, with maybe a CC, soem ip's, and maybe an obs or armory or something. the ladder, with the two marines on it, would connect to this shelf.

hmm, you could also make the back side of that shelf on it a window, so you could see the other side of the hive, if the angles and mobo placement works out. that might be cool. lots of work though

If you really want to just have a clean, less hassle side, maybe you could just do a nice TSA logo, all blown up nice and big.

hmm, that's all ideas i have for now, i'll be sure to post more if i get any new ones, or if you want clarification on anything. good luck with it, sounds cool.

Perhaps you could make the back of it look like the back of a comm chair.

An NS theme seems as good an exuse as any to mount a giant slow moving red LED lit fan. NS is really a three way battle after all, rines vs aliens vs dark scary maps. I Would also recomend that you get all your wires piped and color them dull silvers and what not, maby texture them to look a little worn and torn. NS lighting, with the ocational exception of that weird blue lightningy wall that alot of maps use, is generally quite conventional, so luminecent wires and glow in the dark liquid coolant would actually be quite counter productive to the theme of the case. As for the marines VS aliens thing, all I can think about for the marines side, is that it would be modeled after thier structures, with maby some body armor conspicuously placed or something. Similarly, for the aliens side, all I can picure is various types of infestation...

The working res node will be so cool , just make sure that there is a way to turn it off that doesn't shut down the system. Otherwize practicality, and emergancy internal steam leaks will be real hard to deal with.

well how about having the the model hanging IN the case in the middle? with the wires sticking out and stuff, perhaps you could use green + brown + yellowish (infestation-like) colored wires, that'd really be a looker.

Have Commander mode on it, Commander name (your nick?) at the top, resources etc, buttons all over the place n stuff like that

na, no point in a custom monitor

I've decided on going with a commander pov as the main window for the case. On the opposite side I will take a 2D hive and make the "bulbous" part of the hive glow. Should look great in the end. I'll have the alien creep look like it has infested the entire side of the case. Enjoy!

Is it crooked? o_0
• porchaporcha Join Date: 2003-08-26 Member: 20244Members
its actually not crooked at all, i stayed within all the boundaries and the command console itself isnt flush across as it is, the screenshot the command parts were taken from was a perfect overhead view, i didnt even think of trying to take a perfect overhead view when i took the picture. Fear not, it will all look straight in the end
