Amazing Resource Usage

Does anyone know why I'm getting up to 75-90% of my CPU clock used while running a full server on a combat map? I've tried a lot of things, and nothing seems to make it efficient. The only reason I'm asking this is that in posts both here, and on other forums, people say that most modern computers can run NS. Let me break down the situation here:

We are running a dedicated server on RedHat 9. We have 3 CS servers running, and one DoD server running - NOT OOCCUPIED when my samples were taken. Clock used before the NS server fills up is nothing all the way up to 3%. Once the NS server fills up, we get to 90% and MASSIVE lag spikes. Is there some way to make this efficient or am I just stuck?

[Edit] Oh yes, and I've tried going back to an older version of HLDS, but since that post is so old.... lol.[Edit]

System Specs.

P4 2.4 GHz 533MHz FSB
1GB of PC3200 RAM
Maxtor 60GB Drive IDE 133

    Mine is the same. It eats CPU and RAM. But starts off with like 8% of ram usage with full server.. but after a couple of days, the usage starts shooting up.. any fixes for this?

    I use Fedora Core 2 try using that. Or the 2.6 kernel if you have Hyper Threading turn off SMP initially to test the results. Easiest way is 2.6 kernel.

    If you don't know how to upgrade FC1 using yum to FC2 I'll tell you how to do that as well. But if you plan on doing that make sure you choose a local base otherwise huge bandwidth bills.

    Hope this helps but ultimately you need a 2.6 kernel to improve your situation immensely. If you read the stickied topics it will help you to fix it but ultimately a recompile of a kernel or an upgrade is about what you need. I wouldn't however worry to much about cpu usage because its always gonna be high the lag is the issue and yes I sorta suffer from teh same problem.

    Now wait a second... Before I go switching to Fedora, how much more efficiency can I expect to see? I mean... I'd like to see a MASSIVE drop in usage, because NS simply is a hog on the server end, and I don't se why. :\
