Putting Together A New Computer.

<div class="IPBDescription">Care to lend an opinion?</div> Ok so I'm building a new computer, with all the shiny new games coming out I really need it.
I've been doing allot of window shopping on this cool site my friend showed me called newegg.com, and I've put together a wish list of parts that I would need.
I was wondering if any of you, many of whom I know to be much more tech savvy then me, would mind telling me if all this stuff will work?

Starting with the chip:
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=19-116-171&DEPA=0' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-116-171&DEPA=0</a>

Case:
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=11-138-033&DEPA=1' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-138-033&DEPA=1</a>

Two extra fans for the case:
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-886-001&depa=0' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-886-001&depa=0</a>

Motherboard:
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=13-135-152&DEPA=0' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-135-152&DEPA=0</a>

And lastly the RAM, 1 gig of it:
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=20-141-424&DEPA=0' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-141-424&DEPA=0</a>

Well that’s the line up, all the other parts I would need I have already.
Anyone see any problems, like compatibility, overpricing, bad products?
I know it's not top of the line but I'm working on a budget and I can't go any higher (believe me, I can't <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) So what do you think?

PS: The chip has a Prescott core, which I read can have heating problems but has better speed. Hopefully the extra two fans will take care of it?

    What about a video card?

    I have one of those it's a....*gets box* "e-GeForce FX 5200"

    It bought it about a year ago, and it works nicely, ether way I don't have the money for a new one.

    Perhaps if you skimped on some of the other components you'd be able to afford a graphics card that <i>won't</i> have to run Doom 3 at 640x480 low detail...

    Never mind the graphics card, that’s another purchase for another time.

    Does anyone have anything helpful to say about what I'm buying?

    Youre probably going to want a power supply. Nobody ever sells a case and a power supply that cheap, unless theres a reason.
  • reasareasa Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 8010Members, Constellation
    I had thought that myself, but my freind the same one who showed me this site, bought the exact same case, with powersupply and all. It's worked fine for him for 3 months now.

    It says right on it, 430W power supply, which seems excessive... But WTH, good deal.

    I might be worried that the power supply doesn't have proper surge protection, or maby undereffective cooling for that price though...

    I recomend a different motherboard, such as the Asus P4P800 Deluxe. Great mobo...

    I have that ram (same model number and everything <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) and it's wonderful. I did a memory test and it had 0 errors...

    I only have 1 stick, but I'm ordering 1 more stick as soon as I get DOOM3. Let me know how 2 sticks work <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Your computer sounds like it's going to be great.

    I'd have to agree. ECS isn't known for their craftmanship...

    Also that 3.0E is the new Prescott chip, you'll need good cooling for those things. Word is they run pretty hot.

    Hmm I looked into that motherboard, it looks great, got a better rating then the ECS too. Probably wouldn't want to skimp around the edges with something like that.

    Might have to do some reshuffling to afford it though, damn my financial limitations!

    Thanks for reassuring me about the ram, always nice hear something works from someone who has used it. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Sandrock, you think my hypothetical cooling system will be enough?

    I wish NewEgg had a UK branch they seem like a great supplier.
    Alas i stuck with <a href='http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/home/' target='_blank'>eBuyer</a> which are cheep but the service is aweful, so now i use <a href='http://www.aria.co.uk/Products.asp' target='_blank'>Aria</a> which is slightly more expensive but fantastic service. One order through royal mail took 28 Hours. Not bad seen as it wasn'e even a priority order or next day delivery

    So anyone got any more tips, or can I safely assume this thing will work?

    One thing you might want to consider. The back fan grills which are punched-out steel, see if you can obtain a dremel to cut those out. They restrict ALOT of airflow, and the sharp edges cause quite a bit of air turbulence which in turn causes noise.

    The stock heatsink with that processor should be good enough. If you plan on doing any overclocking, you'll want a better heatsink though. Check out heatsink solutions from thermalright, they make some of the best heatsinks on the market. Particularly the SLK947U/948U and SP94.

    My case cost 10 pounds, it came with a power supply and a very quiet/good one at that!

    I've been reading allot of reviews/test results, and in allot of them the northwood seems to preform better then the prescott. I think I'm just going to go with the 3Ghz northwood and spare myself the trouble.

    Thanks for the help though.

    My case costs $180, and came with a 420 watt psu, Thermaltake is good, but damn pricy, a case and a psu for $20, I'd be wary, if the PSU screws up, it'll take your whole PC with you, so before you buy, consider if it's worth spending $60 on a quality PSU (antec) rather then having your entire PC go down :/
