Need Help With Photoshop Recoloring

in Customization Help and Troubleshooting
i want to recolor some of the weapons in ns into darker colors , but when i put in the texture into photoshop cs 8.0 it doesnt let me change one single box of the texture using the hue/saturation tool, it only works on the entire image.
is there something im missing, like a special way to select just the area you want to change the color of ?

    Change the color mode from indexed to RGB. You will have to change it back to 256 indexed colors when you are done.

    You need to change the colour depth to a higher level, then you can select the area you want and change it.
    (At least that is how it is in Pain Shop Pro 7...)
