<div class="IPBDescription">Need suggestions</div> I need some suggestions on good RPGs (single-player). I have a rather broad taste and old games is no problem, but I'd prefer 3D graphics (or at least good-looking 2D). For example, I enjoyed the Fallout series, Baldurs Gate, Knights of the Old Republic and the Ultima series (especially IX, though the experience was almost ruined by the enormous amount of bugs and the poor interface). I'd rather stay away from hack 'n slash (Diablo for example), but I'm willing to accept those too if they are good. RPG hybrids works too, as long as the RPG elements are strong (such as Jagged Alliance 2 and Warcraft III, though those a bit of a borderline case).

Ever tried The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind? It's excellent.
  • Status_QuoStatus_Quo Join Date: 2004-01-30 Member: 25749Members
I'll give it a try. I'm quite certain a friend of mine got that (at least, I remember him talking about "Morrowind" some time ago).
    Any more?

Morrowind, Planescape: Torment, Deus Ex, Deus Ex, and Deus Ex, did I mention Deus Ex?

Edit: It's probably not what you're looking for, but X2: The Threat is basically like Morrowind in Space, but with better graphics, less story, and a bigger focus on trading.

The demo of Beyond Good and Evil wasn't too bad.. but I'd go with other recomendations first.

A lot of people didn't like it, but my all time favorite RPG ever until KOTOR came out was Vampire: The Masquerade, its really good. You should be able to pick it up for $5 or $10 somewhere.

Doom, I *think* thats the one I played that was really good, or is Vampire: The Masquerade and something about redemption a different game. Either way great games that progress through the middle ages to modern times.

I can get Deus Ex 2 (not sure about the first Deus Ex, I have to ask my friend about that), and System Shock 2. How old is Planescape? I don't think I can get it, but I might be able to buy it for a reasonable price if it's not very new. I very much doubt any of my friends have Vampire: The Masquerade, but I could check the local stores for it...
As for SNES emulators, I'm quite sure I've already gone through most good RPGs on it. Even Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2), which wasn't even translated to english.

Thanks for the help guys. If you have more, it can't hurt. I've got plenty of nights up ahed during which I expect little to no sleep, and I've already read through, er, 21 books I think, the past month. I'm running out of stuff to read (in fact, suggestions on sci-fi/fantasy books would be appreciated as well <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

If you're doing that, get Secret of Mana and Seiken densetsu 3 for SNES.

There's only 1 out right now, so yes its the one.

I'm REALLY looking forward to the new one that's in dev by Trokia (guys who did Fallout if I'm not mistaken), as it looks to be the ultra pwn. No middle ages era, but that's okay...

Planescape: Torment is my favorite PC RPG, I recommend that.

Is it still going to be in a 3rd person overhead isometeric type veiw? Guns in general are hard to handle in a view like that.

No, VtM: Bloodlines is in first person.

<b>Edit:</b> I think you drop back to third person for melee though.

    Diablo II...

    ...only kidding XD

Uh, lets see... depends how 'old' you want to get. I'd definitely throw in a second vote for System Shock 2 though and Fallout 1 and 2. I think nem once mentioned one called 'gothic' or something?

For super old try daggerfall; that's if you can even run it on your PC ^~
    Oh and the ultima games.

If you enjoyed Baulders Gate, try Icewind Dale, they have pretty similar overall gameplay.

Ask your friend? You mean you can't find it? Look in bargain bins. I saw DX GOTY going for $10 in Radio Shack. Don't bother with DX2 until you've finished the original, though, because while it is a good game, it's almost an insult to the DX name (that should give you an idea of the quality of the original), and it might spoil some of the story for you if you play them out of order.

It's somewhat old, you shouldn't have much trouble finding it online for cheap. It was made by Black Isle (the same people that made Fallout 2, and uses the engine behind Baulder's Gate, but it's a hundred times better than either of those games.

Have you tried Terranigma? How about Tales of Phantasia or Star Ocean?

Planescape Torment is probably the best game I have played, certainly the best RPG. The writing is excellent and it is one of the few games in which the dialogue makes a huge difference in the game.

Only Singleplayer? Damn, I'd recommend Neverwinter Nights and the expansions (Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark), but only for the broad community.

The single player isn't really fun, its more like a swift kick to the cr<span style='color:sky'>o</span>tch.

Daggerfall, is, as Gem said, a very good game, but the extreme difficulty in getting it to work in Windows XP, the butt ugly graphics, and the bugs would probably turn you away.

    Planescape: Torment

    Obtain it by all accounts.

Threaten Interplay to get the licence back if you have to...

Say... what the deuce happened to Interplay? It couldn't pay its employees for a while, last I heard they got back up... and now they're dead again?

Not certain, but I'd rather borrow it for free than buy it. I guess I could download it too, but I'd rather not open that can of worms.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Have you tried Terranigma? Terranigma, yes. I don't remember exactly which one it was though (Soul Blazer 2, is it?). I gave Tales of Phantasia a try, but I never made it through to the end for some reason. I think I got bored with it (as I did with the Breat of Fire games). I've never even heard of Star Ocean, so I guess I could dig up my SNES emulator and give that one a try.

Not officially. The only translation there is is an edited ROM.

Liku: You have good taste in RPG's, Secret of Mana was my all time fave!

Amazing when you've got 3 mates huddled round the screen all playing. And seiken densetsu 3 was hilarious with great characters. I did play the translated rom so it does exist.

Chronotrigger is worth playing if you are looking at the older console rpg's and want to get a rom or two, I especially love the story bits where they are camping and the robot plants the forest... amazing stuff.

I've gotta second Gothic and Gothic 2, they're pretty recent and yet relatively overlooked... I'm so hooked on the two of them right now that I just put about 60 hours into gothic 1 to beat it, another 60 into gothic 2 to beat that, and now I have about 10 hours into playing gothic 2 AGAIN as a mage instead of a mercenary... first game ever I can truly say I had the impulse to play through twice in a row...

However, Planscape Torment has one of the most amazing stories told in an rpg, worth playing for sure!
