Hideouts

Is there a reasonable point to it?
Gorge's hideouts: AKA chill-rooms.
They hold a few stories, sometimes humourous, sometimes irritating. I have heard a few opinions about this Kharaa 'feature' in NS, and the general response I get while playing and when asking, is that some think it is a big waste of time.

Now as most will know, but for those n00bs out there including myself, a hideout, or more commonly known chill-rooms, are the places where the Kharaa lifeforms can sit and hide to survive the pingofdeath. When the last hive goes down, the lucky survivors decide to go chill in these places, and out of the 95% of the games I have played, they eventually get killed by grenades of JP's who sought them out with MT.

But what is the real reason for these hideouts? Is there a point to them? As far as my opinion goes, something stupidly funny goes on in these times, but everytime we get killed and we all go back to readyroom. About 2% of the times there has been a gorge in the chillroom, he has managed to make a run for a hive and drop it, if he has the res; so that the other players can spawn back later and continue the game. But should this feature be used for that tiny 2%? If it is such a waste, then why doesn't the NS team make it so the remaining Kharaa lifeforms die instantly after the last hive goes down? This would make starting the next game a lot faster. In a previous post, one guy stated that a good gorge makes hideouts to survive hive attacks, but out of my playing times, that gorge is just messing around and being no help to the team by sitting and constructing a chillroom just to put some points up on the board. If people believe there is no point, there are still the minority that want to chill. In the games I have played, no-one has particularly got aggresive or agitated with the wastes parking in the chillrooms.

So I suggest that everyone grab a flame-proof suit and post their opinions and facts, dicusing the proper uses (if any) or abuses, the point, and if it should be modified or removed (I personally sugest that all players in a chillroom after the hive goes down get randomly teleported to another hive location, where they can maybe drop a hive if they saved the res, and if the rines didn't secure it. Gives a better chance than just camping).

Ok, chill-rooms are freaking retarded. If the other team has JPs, GLs, and HMGs and you have a have several defense chambers you've lost, the end. If you do manage to sneak out and put up another hive it's going to have to be very very soon after the last hive goes down since the marines will now be hunting you, not you and your hives. Even if you do manage to be super-gorge and put up another hive the marine team is going to be on you really really fast and you are just prolonging death anyways.

Just do the manly thing and run into a squadron of marines spamming them with spit (bile bomb would be better but you've lost already). Hopefully, they'll be playful and not shoot you down and instead dance with their knives out (more funny anyways).

Yes very funny! I myself like the gorge character the most (seen as my ping is too high online for effective assualting), and if there is a chill-room nearby after the hive goes down, I get the urge to prolong the game, even though I thought it is a waste. I suppose the best thing about chilrooms is the amusment some get, specially when the gorge teases the marines with no JP's when he is in an out of reach vent (with a say all script coming up every 2 seconds: *chuckle*). A few last minute kills and lol's, but you got to make the decision on whether its better to mess around and sometimes be the clown in a chillroom, or start a new game which is fun in itself (well, I think so; NS is fun to me even when i'm doing the worst, not serious like CS which your respect is determined mainly by your frags.)

more fun hiding as a rine in IDIOTIC places. and see how long it takes to find you. And I do not mean vents. I mean idiotic places.

I hided effectively in the following things:
    steam (from RT ow w/e)
the holoimage next to origins xenophobic RT
    behind a few boxes
    besides a doorentrance

etc.. idiotic huh? it seriously works. most ppl jsut run and never scout the area as they should. you can camp in easy to see places. just duck. its that easy.

When a marine does it, it's funny as hell, cause wherever he's hiding almost any alien can go as well, so it's not lame. Aliens, on the other hand, can construct much more elaborate hideouts in hard-to-reach places, and can also have their own turrets, which a hiding marine can't have. That's why an alien hiding is just tiresome, while a marine hiding is funny.

I'm wondering now if I ever played a game with you on my team, cause I coulda sworn I remember the last player on our team trying this one time...funniest hiding spot evar.

Longest I've ever hid as the last rine - 7 minutes. The entire marine team had mikes, hilarity ensued as at least 2 fades blinked past my hiding spot. SOF ruins it though....oh yeah, that's another reason why marine hiding is funny, cause eventually they have to find you with sof. As an alien, if you don't move, marines can't use mt now can they .

Yes. It's easy to hide if nobody looks at you. However it works not because you're clever, but because you're playing against the mentally deficient.

Gorge hideouts after the game is over are dumb, dumb, dumb. Absolutely stupid, no purpose, no redeeming qualities, no tactical or strategic value, nothing of worth to them in the slightest. Once the game is over those one or two gorges are just wasting everybody's time. I don't play these games just to sit around spectating and seeing how long someone can camp against overwhelming odds. Don't you people always love saying how much you hate Counterstrike? Same exact situation there. Why people do this escapes me. How many years has it been since NS has been around, and people are still getting their nerdy girly-giggles from building three DCs in a vent somewhere? Grow up.

While the game is still in progress however, yes, there are some vents where putting DCs MCs and SCs can really help the defending aliens by proving a healing zone closer to where the combat is taking place. But you have to know which vents you can do this with, and how useful they actually will be. Here is an example in everyone's favorite bland, symetrical rorschark of a map, ns_Veil.

Some hideouts start out as chamber nests to be honest.

I like to drop surplus MC, DC and SC in vents because it puts them well out of marine LOS and makes it hard for them to remove my upgrades.

At game end I agree its annoying but sieging and pinging should solve most problems. I agree that griefers are a problem, but at the same time it should take JPers no less than a minute to scour most maps, and once the offending gorge is found he can swiftly be GLed to hell or sieged right in his nest.

If it takes longer than a minute to clear a gorge nest then you're doing something verrrrry wrong.

I agree with swift's idea. If a gorge is constructing a hideout near passageways and halls so that other players can be healed through there, that is fine. But its when that gorge decides to make it somewhere inapropriet and way out of his teams reach, that's what makes him useless. Hideouts should be purely for healing posts, and with lerks flying and sporing through these vents, he can pretty mush last forever. And a good gorge should study the maps and memorize where strategic hideout places are, so that he can get the job done ASAP and actually be a help.
But even if there are no useless gorges in the map and POD comes with someone in the hideout, he should be unselfish and F4 for the sake of the whole team.
I don't think rine hiding is much of a problem, and agree it is a lot less stupid than camping gorges. Besides its a lot more comical.

there is only one point imo. placeing upgrade chambers in a vent so that the mariens cannt get them unless they use team work/jp.

You know that hideouts have gotten a little out of control when a new map comes complete with a room called "Gorge Hideout". Even has a frickin res node, so technically the aliens could comeback from one gorge in that hideout.

IMO, it's fun. Why? Because it lames a bit the marine victory now that the game has gone so bland. It's fun to see how long you can survive, how many do you manage to kill before they (eventually) get you, and do you manage to build that "last" hive before they shoot it down too. But this is what I usually do only when the game is (oh, so often) already decided. I don't think there is any fun in fragging without any chance to win the game; deathmatch isn't why I started to play NS.

So gorge-hideout is the best fun then.

once again i agree with swift... the 2 seconds of healing from those dc's can be the difference between rine dominations or alien domination in l8r game... on custom maps, there should be vents like this that allow such stratigical benefits as constanly healing onos during HA push baks...

if anyone can make a custom map like this (i.e. vents that can be used not for gorge hideouts at end, but during game indirect healing stations) then i will play that map non-stop 24/7...

btw now im gona have to gorge on that map and put some dc's up there for skulks... i never really relised the radius of healing dc until i read tis thread... lol
