Mines...3 Modes Of Use?

<div class="IPBDescription">more fun from the original manual!</div> From the observation of the gorge in the original manual:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->This one was working – it began to cycle open. Deej slapped the trip mine onto the bottom sill of the window so only two of its legs were gripping. "Back off!" he yelled, and we ran back into the lab room. Mines self-detonate if placed "incorrectly". It beeped a few times in warning. We expected shards to come with the explosion – but there was only the mine's concussion, and then a ripping sound. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I guess most of you know how 1.0x's mines work. Flat on ground or surface makes it a proximity mine. On walls (and certain slants) makes it a trip mine complete with red laz0r. Anything else, the mine will blow up in your face. Now, this bit from the manual makes it seem like this third "option" was done on purpose. Was this a 'feature'?

They caused server crash, or so I was told.

    One and the same.

It seems there's this universal rule of programming that cool stuff takes too much code.

:( The laz00rb33mz were totally radical.

As for "incorrectly" using mines to blow things up, sounds cool. Kind of like a welder-point, except you detonate the mine to open it.

But since we already have weld points, and your guns break glass just fine...

Sounds more like a story explanation of a hard-to-fix bug to me. I'm surprised there aren't any nanites in there.

Oh im sure there are nanites in there, you just dont hear about them.

/Remembers all those horrible experiences as l4m0rz placed those mines to ceiling -just try that in atmos. 10 res wasted. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

They should make it easier to do... it could be used if A) you're being chased or B) you want to destroy a structure

I liked the trip mines with the laser because of the laser sound and the mine sound was heard often too. It just makes the base seem safer even if it's not.

yeah, it was awesome fun to put a couple of mines each side of the door and make it look like a laser prison <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

One thing that I'd like to add is the idea of welding a placed mine to disarm it. So you could pick it up and place it again. Just throwing the idea out.

I liked to play Mission Impossible. What you would do is use the old rine start in caged, place mines all over it, get someone to play the MI tune on voice comm for everyone then challenege a skulk to get to the CC without tripping any. I never got around to being the skulk though. It was always funny watching a skulk get so close then the whole room explode <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

This feature is actually in the game. Planting mines on top of a hive or on a structure which you then recycle causes them to detonate without any alien interference.

Try putting them on the side of the hive. I did that once, shortly we killled the hive and they were floating in mid air.

While talking we are talking about mines I saw several screenies of mine staircases and crazy patterns in the closed beta. Can we do that in this version? I'm yet to see it.

You can do mine stairs, yeah. Pretty easy and rather powerful.

ok... so player a puts down a mine. player b runs up, welds it, and then puts it down again to steal the frag. i think weldable mines would just increase the things for lamers to do to **** ppl off

The Current Mines (being trip mines) are very effective and deadly, but when placed on walls they seem almost useless at times, SKulks can see them alot clearer and so just avoid them all together. You do get the odd Vertical Placement that is effective, but the horizontal placement is far better.

Why can't the mines, when placed Vertica,l be motion sensitive, any alien movement within say 5 Units causes it to go off.
Horizontal they are still trip, Vertical they are Motion Sensitive in a small area around the mine. This way they don't need to be touched to go off, just need to be close to it.

The reason I post this is because they would be very useful to block off halls or doors. Place 2 on each side of the wall and its a death trap for any foolish SKulk runing down without looking.

Why not make it client side?
  • ThiefThief Ownage Join Date: 2003-08-09 Member: 19214Members, Constellation
because if I remember correctly, they actually had a function(the lazers), where they actually detected movement, not just for looks, and such a thing couldnt be client-only I dont thinks

I remember nearly getting banned from a server for writing "TURRENT" on the wall of Bast marine start in mines.

The server crashed but I think I made my point.

i spose we already got nades so we dont need custom mines...

you cant make staircases with mines anymore due to the building proximity rules. Cant place a mine close to another mine or it wont actually plant. Just go and try it.

I dont mind getting rid of the lasers but i liked their effect. Proximity mines suck. You just needed 1 mine in the middle of a vent to get rid of skulks. now you need like 4.

    Invisible lazer beams?
